Before heavy rain arrives, check local alerts and your property’s flood exposure, clear obvious drainage obstructions, move valuables and important documents out of low areas, and be ready to evacuate if officials tell you to. These steps can reduce avoidable damage and help your household respond, but no quick fix can guarantee that water will stay out.

  • Check your local government’s alerts and current weather warnings.
  • Identify whether your home or route could be affected by flooding.
  • Clear accessible drains and gutters without entering standing or moving water.
  • Prepare to leave promptly if authorities issue an evacuation order.

Before the weekend: check risk and make a household plan

Find local information and alerts

Flood risk and warnings vary by location and can change during the weekend. Check your local emergency-management and weather updates, sign up for community alerts, and follow instructions from local officials. FEMA’s Floods guidance recommends knowing your local flood risk and planning ahead.

Identify evacuation routes before rain begins, including more than one route if possible. Consider whether low-lying roads or areas near waterways could affect your route, and use official directions if an evacuation is ordered.

Decide how your household will move or shelter

Agree on how household members will contact one another and where they will meet if separated. Account for children, older adults, people with disabilities, and pets when planning how to leave. Keep essential items together so you can take them without delaying an evacuation.

Use equipment only when it suits the property

FEMA lists sandbags as a temporary barrier and recommends considering a sump pump with battery backup, a water alarm, and sewer-line check valves in relevant circumstances. These measures depend on the home’s layout, drainage, and flood exposure; none guarantees that water will not enter. Do not try to place barriers or retrieve belongings once water makes access unsafe.

More substantial measures—such as elevating a furnace, water heater, or electrical panel, basement waterproofing, or raising a building—are property-specific projects, not last-minute preparations for every rainy weekend. FEMA’s hurricane-preparedness guidance discusses these as flood-resistance measures to consider according to needs and budget; consult a qualified local flood-mitigation or building professional about what is appropriate for your home. See FEMA’s hurricane preparedness sheet.

Check insurance before a threat develops

Review your policy and confirm what it covers rather than assuming a standard property policy pays for flood damage. FEMA’s 2020 hurricane guidance says a flood insurance policy purchased then took 30 days to go into effect; that is guidance from 2020, not a guarantee of current terms or a solution for an imminent weekend threat. Verify current terms directly with your insurer. The same FEMA sheet notes the importance of considering insurance ahead of a flood threat.

If flooding starts: prioritize life over property

  • Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. FEMA’s flood hazard sheet states: “Do not drive through floodwaters.” Just one foot of moving water can sweep a vehicle away, according to FEMA’s 2025 Be Prepared for a Flood sheet. This is a warning, not a safe-depth threshold: do not drive through floodwater at any depth.
  • Follow evacuation orders and directions from local officials; do not delay to collect belongings.
  • After flooding, return only when authorities say it is safe. Check with your local health department before drinking tap water, and use protective gear during cleanup. Do not touch wet electrical equipment or handle electrical equipment while standing in water.
