Before heading to a rainy outdoor football game, check the latest forecast and organizer updates, pack for your role, and know where to take shelter. Players should use safe, competition-compliant equipment; spectators should plan for wet and cold conditions. If you hear thunder or see lightning, leave the playing area for a substantial building or enclosed hard-topped vehicle—ordinary rain gear and dugouts are not safe shelter.
Check the forecast and match updates before you leave
Check the local forecast for rain, thunderstorms, and high winds, then look for messages from the club, league, or venue about kickoff changes and site instructions. England Football advises participants to check forecasts and says the home team should plan contingencies and shelter. See England Football’s grassroots thunderstorm guidance.
If you are organizing a team or event, establish who can stop or postpone activity and where participants will go if a storm arrives. England Football says match decisions about thunderstorms should be made by the match official, ideally discussed with both teams before kickoff; for training, the person running the activity is responsible.

If you are playing
Wear equipment that is safe and allowed by your competition. The 2026–27 Laws of the Game, reproduced in England Football’s Laws of the Game page, make footwear compulsory and prohibit dangerous equipment. They do not specify a universally correct stud pattern for wet conditions. Check your competition’s requirements and the playing surface rather than assuming one boot type suits wet natural grass and artificial turf alike.

Keep warm-up layers and spare clothing off the field unless competition rules permit them. Weather-specific apparel advice is not set out in the cited laws, so follow your team and venue guidance.

Know when rain becomes a safety issue
Rain alone does not create a universal cancellation threshold. England Football’s grassroots guidance says an event should be postponed or cancelled when weather is likely to make it unsafe, including thunderstorms or extreme winds and rain. The match official or activity organizer should make the decision under the local plan. After a delay, the responsible person should check whether standing water or debris has made the pitch unplayable.

Follow official instructions rather than deciding to continue because the rain seems manageable. Venue-specific conditions and the state of the pitch matter.

Get off the field if there is thunder or lightning
If you hear thunder or see lightning, leave the playing area and seek proper shelter immediately. The U.S. National Weather Service says a substantial building or a hard-topped metal vehicle with its windows closed provides protection. A dugout, small rain shelter, or shed does not. Its guidance states: “There is no place outside that is safe when a thunderstorm is in the area.” Read its outdoor sports lightning safety guidance.
Do not resume outdoor activity until at least 30 minutes after the last thunder, and follow current local guidance and the event’s safety plan. Before play restarts, the responsible official or organizer should also assess the pitch for water and debris.

- Before leaving: Check the latest forecast and organizer messages; pack role-appropriate clothing and gear; confirm venue rules if you are bringing an umbrella or bag.
- At the venue: Keep monitoring conditions and follow the official or organizer’s directions about delays, cancellation, or shelter.
- If thunder or lightning occurs: Leave the playing area for a substantial building or enclosed hard-topped vehicle. Do not use a dugout or rain shelter as lightning protection.
- Before returning outdoors: Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder and wait for the responsible person to confirm it is safe and the pitch is playable.
