On PC, digital preloading for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 starts October 15, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. PT. Activision lists an SSD requirement of at least 115 GB, but that is a minimum rather than a comfortable amount: mandatory updates and temporary patch files need additional free space. The campaign opens for eligible digital preorders on October 16, DMZ on October 20, and the full game launches worldwide on October 23. Console players should use the preload indicator in their own store because Activision has not published one universal console preload time or one exact console package size.
Modern Warfare 4 preload and launch schedule
The dates below are the published schedule for the 2026 release. Your platform may display a different local date because storefronts convert the release moment to your region.

Activision confirms physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as well as digital availability on supported platforms. The published material does not establish a single preload hour or a universal download size for every console, so a console’s own store countdown is the authoritative indicator for that system.
What you need before starting the download
Confirm the edition and purchasing account
Preload rights follow the account and storefront that made the digital purchase. On PC, sign in to that same storefront account. On a console, open the purchased edition from the platform library or store rather than searching for a different listing. Physical console buyers normally install from the disc and then apply updates; the disc edition does not create a universal digital-preload schedule.

Check the PC minimums
Activision’s official PC minimum calls for Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB of RAM, a supported processor and graphics card, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, broadband internet, and an SSD with at least 115 GB available. The processor and graphics requirements are model-specific on the official specification page, so compare your exact CPU and GPU there instead of assuming that any recent system qualifies.
- Install pending Windows updates and graphics-driver updates before the game download begins.
- Verify that TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enabled in firmware when your system requires them; changing firmware settings can affect other operating-system features, so follow your motherboard or PC manufacturer’s instructions.
- Use the SSD that will hold the game. Moving the finished installation to a slower drive later can create another large transfer and will not change the stated SSD requirement.
Reserve more than 115 GB
The 115 GB figure is the official PC floor, not a promise that 115 GB of free space will be enough for every patch. Keep meaningful headroom for mandatory updates, decompression, and temporary files created while an update is applied. If the launcher reports less free space than required, clear space before starting rather than relying on the installer to remove files automatically.
How to preload on PC
- Open the purchasing storefront. Sign in with the account that bought the digital PC edition and open the Modern Warfare 4 product page or library entry.
- Wait for the published preload window. Use the October 15, 2026, 9:00 a.m. PT start time shown above. The available control may be labelled Download, Pre-load, or similar; storefront wording is not identical on every service.
- Start the installation to the prepared SSD. Select the SSD with the reserved space. If the launcher offers a location choice, avoid a nearly full drive because update staging can need more space than the final installed files.
- Choose only controls the launcher actually provides. Some installations expose a Manage installation screen for modes or language packs. Deselect an item only when it is explicitly identified as optional; Activision has not published a complete component-removal matrix that guarantees a particular space saving.
- Let the download and verification finish. Do not shut down the computer while the launcher is applying files. A progress bar can pause during verification even when network activity appears low.
- Reopen the launcher before early access. A final update can be required after preload. Start the launcher while connected so it can check for that update before the campaign-access date.
If the preload button is missing at the published time, refresh the storefront, confirm that the purchase appears on the signed-in account, and check the platform’s release countdown. Activision does not document one universal workaround, so avoid deleting the installation or changing regions as a first response.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
Open the library entry for the edition you purchased and look for the platform’s Download, Pre-load, or Manage content control. If the store shows a countdown, use that timer for your local release moment. Leave room for updates even if the initial package appears smaller than the PC minimum; Activision has not published one console-wide GB figure that can be applied to every edition.

Switch 2
Use the Switch 2 eShop or library entry for your purchased edition and follow the current download indicator. Storage reporting and package handling can differ from the other console families. The safest plan is to keep substantial free space on the system or approved storage, then allow the console to complete its update check before launch.
Physical editions
A physical PS5 or Xbox Series X edition supplies the base game through the disc, but the console may still need a large installation and an internet update. Keep the console online during installation and use the disc edition’s own store page for any downloadable components. Do not assume that owning a disc grants the digital preorder early-access windows; those windows are stated for eligible digital preorders.
Why the game can require so much storage
115 GB is a floor, not the final lifetime footprint
Activision’s 115 GB SSD requirement describes the official minimum PC space at the stated specification. A live-service game can receive mandatory updates after the initial preload, and update systems may need temporary working room while replacing or validating large archives. That is why a drive with exactly 115 GB free can still fail during a patch.

Activision says Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes to deliver high-quality visuals while reducing the amount stored locally on the hard drive. Streaming does not make the game independent of a network connection: Multiplayer, including private matches, and DMZ require a continuous internet connection. A smaller local installation therefore comes with a connectivity requirement, not a free reduction in total data transferred over time.

Texture streaming is consequently a choice between local capacity and dependable broadband. If you regularly play Multiplayer or DMZ where the connection is metered, unstable, or unavailable, do not plan on deleting local assets and then playing those modes offline.

Use the game’s management screen first
After installation, open the platform’s Manage installation or similarly named control from the game library. Remove a mode or language pack only if the screen clearly identifies it as removable and tells you what remains playable. The official information confirms texture streaming but does not list every removable package or promise a fixed reduction for any particular combination, so treat the displayed size as the only reliable result.

Clean the drive safely
- Uninstall games you no longer play from the same SSD, or move them to another drive using your platform’s built-in move function.
- Delete old installers, duplicate downloads, and temporary files through the operating system’s storage settings.
- Move video captures and screenshots to external storage before deleting them from the console or PC.
- Keep the operating system, launcher, and graphics-driver space requirements in addition to the game’s own requirement.
- After freeing space, empty the recycle bin or equivalent trash location; files there still consume capacity.
Do not manually delete folders inside the Modern Warfare 4 installation directory. If a component needs to be removed, use the launcher or console management screen so the platform can update its manifest and restore files when needed.
Plan for update headroom
For a PC, choose a target substantially larger than 115 GB rather than filling the SSD to its limit. The exact extra amount varies with the update, the launcher, and what other data is on the drive; Activision gives no universal headroom number. On consoles, apply the same principle: the store’s current free-space check matters more than a package-size estimate copied from another platform.
Digital versus physical: which preload choice fits?

Activision also lists a 10% Vault Edition loyalty discount for eligible owners. That is an edition benefit and does not reduce the game’s storage requirement or change the published preload schedule.
Connectivity planning for preload and play
Preloading requires a broadband connection, and the initial download can be interrupted by sleep settings, router resets, or a congested Wi-Fi link. Use a wired connection where practical, pause other large downloads, and disable automatic sleep until the launcher has finished verifying the files. These steps improve reliability but do not change the official release time.

Once installed, texture streaming can continue to use bandwidth. Multiplayer—including private matches—and DMZ require a continuous internet connection under Activision’s support guidance. Campaign early access is a separate entitlement; do not infer that every mode will have the same offline behavior simply because campaign files were preloaded.
Troubleshooting common preload and storage problems
The preload control is not visible
- Confirm the date and time against the published PC window or your console’s own countdown.
- Check that the signed-in account owns the digital edition and that the correct platform version is selected.
- Refresh or restart the storefront, then inspect the library entry rather than only the search result.
- If the control remains absent, contact the platform’s support channel; Activision has not published a single fix that applies to every storefront.
The installer says there is not enough space
Free more than the displayed minimum, including room for temporary update files. Remove unused games, captures, and installers first. If the launcher still reports an error after space is available, restart it and recheck the selected install drive; do not assume that moving only part of the game will satisfy an SSD requirement.
The download is slow or repeatedly pauses
Check whether another device is saturating the connection, use Ethernet if possible, and keep the system awake. A pause during file verification is not necessarily a network failure. If the launcher reports corrupted data, use its built-in repair or verify function rather than deleting random files.
An early-access mode is locked after preload
Verify that the account owns an eligible digital preorder and that the launcher has completed its final update check. Campaign and DMZ have separate access dates, so a locked DMZ menu before October 20 does not indicate a failed installation. The full game remains scheduled for October 23.
You need to play without reliable internet
Keep in mind Activision’s continuous-connection requirement for Multiplayer and DMZ. Texture streaming may reduce local storage, but it cannot turn those modes into offline experiences. Arrange a stable connection or plan your play around the modes that your edition and platform permit offline.
A practical checklist
- Confirm the purchased edition and account.
- Check PC requirements: Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, supported CPU/GPU, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, broadband, and an SSD.
- Reserve more than the 115 GB PC minimum for updates and temporary files.
- Start PC preload at the published time; use the console store’s countdown on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Switch 2.
- Use Manage installation for any optional modes or language packs actually offered.
- Keep Multiplayer and DMZ connectivity requirements in mind when relying on texture streaming.
- Run the launcher or console update check before the campaign or DMZ early-access date.
What to expect on launch day
A completed preload is not always the final file operation. Launchers can verify archives, apply a day-one update, or download streamed textures after the game opens. Leave the system online, keep the installation drive above its minimum free-space threshold, and allow the platform to finish those checks before troubleshooting. If the game starts but a mode is unavailable, compare the mode’s access date and the account’s edition entitlement before reinstalling.
