To post effectively on Reddit, choose a subreddit where your topic belongs, read its rules, then use an allowed format and write a clear, relevant title and post. Your ability to submit may also depend on community eligibility settings, and promotional posts are subject to both Reddit’s spam policy and local rules.
Choose the right subreddit before you write
Start with the subject of your question or contribution, then find a community where members discuss it. A post can be well written and still be removed if it is off-topic or conflicts with the community’s requirements.
Reddit’s rules explain that communities can set and enforce their own requirements in addition to sitewide rules. Before drafting, check the subreddit’s sidebar on desktop or its About tab in the mobile app, and look for pinned posts or submission guidance. See Reddit’s rules for users and communities.

Check posting eligibility and allowed formats
The available post types depend on the community. Reddit’s composer may offer text, links, images, video, or an AMA, but a subreddit can restrict which formats it accepts. Follow the format and any template or flair requirements stated in that community’s rules. Reddit’s Poster Eligibility Guide covers common reasons a post may not be available.

Some communities set criteria such as account age, karma, or a verified email address. Reddit does not give one universal threshold that applies to every subreddit, so a number that works in one community may not work in another. If the composer blocks submission, check the eligibility guidance and community rules rather than repeatedly trying the same post.
Write a clear, relevant Reddit post
Make the title specific and accurate
Summarize what the post actually contains. A reader should be able to tell whether you are asking a question, sharing a solution, or starting a discussion without opening an unrelated link or decoding a vague teaser.

Give the necessary context in the body
State the question or contribution plainly and include details that help community members respond. Keep the post focused on the subreddit’s subject and follow any community-specific format instructions. If the content needs a spoiler or NSFW label, apply the relevant tag before submitting.

Why you may not be able to post in a subreddit
A missing or disabled submission option can reflect a local rule or an eligibility condition, not necessarily a problem with Reddit itself. Communities may restrict posting by account age, karma, verified email, topic, or format. Read the subreddit’s rules and Reddit’s eligibility guidance to identify the applicable condition. There is no sitewide karma minimum established for all communities.
Posting frequency can also be limited by anti-spam controls. Reddit’s help guidance notes rate limits; if you encounter one, wait rather than trying to evade it by rapidly resubmitting or switching accounts. The exact allowance can vary, so do not assume a fixed posting cadence will be accepted everywhere.

Avoid spam patterns and account penalties
Reddit’s spam policy treats repeated or unsolicited activity that negatively affects users, communities, or Reddit as potential spam. Patterns to avoid include mass-posting near-identical material, rapidly reposting old content to farm karma, promotional bots, link farming, and disguising links to get around blocks. Reddit says spam can result in content removal or temporary or permanent account bans.

How much can you self-promote on Reddit?
There is no single self-promotion ratio that guarantees acceptance. Promotion is not automatically spam under Reddit’s sitewide guidance, but a subreddit can prohibit it or apply its own limits. Check local rules first; if promotion is allowed, make the post relevant and participate authentically rather than using a community as a stream of ads.

Two figures are often confused, but they describe different kinds of guidance:
| Guidance | What it says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 10% example | Reddit Help says some communities limit self-promotional contributions to 10% of a user’s posting and comment history in that community. Source: Reddit Help, accessed October 2026. | A policy some communities choose, not a platform-wide rule or guarantee of approval. |
| 9:1 rule of thumb | Reddiquette describes one submission promoting your own content for every nine submissions of other content. Source: Reddit Reddiquette, accessed October 2026. | An informal guideline, not a substitute for the subreddit’s rules. |
Reddit’s spam guidance advises users whose contributions mainly link to a business they benefit from to be thoughtful about frequency or consider Reddit’s self-serve advertising platform. Neither a particular ratio nor an advertising purchase overrides a community’s rules.
Repost selectively
Before reposting an existing Reddit post, check whether the destination community allows reposts and whether the material is relevant there. Reddit cautions against reposting to unrelated communities. See its repost guidance. Sharing the same material widely without regard to fit can look like spam and frustrate readers.
