To play a video stored on your own device, put it on a USB drive and plug the drive into a TV that supports video playback over USB, or stream it from a home network or a TV app. Whether a particular file plays depends on three things: the exact TV model, the route you use, and the file’s container and its video and audio codecs. A file name ending in .mp4 or .mkv does not settle the question.

Check your TV model before anything else

Playback support is set by the model, not by the brand name. LG’s support guidance says some TVs show photos and music from a USB device but do not support USB video at all, so a TV that reads your drive may still refuse a movie file. Sony’s support material for DLNA and USB-compatible TVs also lists USB and DLNA support separately, and states that not all files are guaranteed to play.

Find the model number on the TV’s label or in its settings menu, then open the user guide or support page for that exact model. Look for three things: whether USB video playback is listed, which container and codec combinations are supported, and any limits on file size, resolution or storage capacity.

Play a video from a USB drive

The steps below follow LG USA Support’s guide to viewing files from a USB storage device, updated 2026-09-10. Menu names can differ on other brands and on other LG models.

  1. Confirm the TV’s support list includes video playback over USB.
  2. Check the drive. LG’s illustrated guidance uses a USB memory device of 32 GB or less, or an external disk of 2 TB or less, and recommends FAT32 or NTFS. LG describes these as guidance for the instructions in that article and notes that details vary by model, so treat them as LG’s figures rather than a general rule for every smart TV.
  3. Copy the video onto the drive, in a folder if you like, and plug it into a USB port on the TV.
  4. Select the USB input, or open the Media Player from the Home dashboard.
  5. Choose the storage device, then choose the video file type.
  6. Select the file to start playback.
  7. Before removing the drive, eject it using the TV’s menu. LG advises this step to avoid damaging the device or its files.

When a video will not play

A failed file usually points to a codec or container the TV cannot decode, not to a broken drive. Work through these checks in order.

Check the codec, not the extension

The container (for example MP4, MKV or AVI) is only the wrapper. The video and audio codecs inside it decide whether the TV can play the file. LG explains that a file can fail when its codec does not match the TV’s requirements, and recommends reading the file’s media information on a computer and comparing it with the TV’s specifications. Compare the codec names, resolution and frame rate against the model’s list.

Renaming a file will not convert it

Changing .mkv to .mp4 only changes the label. The streams inside stay the same, so a file the TV could not read before will still fail. Only a re-encode changes the codecs.

  • Play the file through a different route, such as a home network or a TV app, which may support formats that USB does not.
  • Use an external media player device, covered below.

Play over a home network

Network playback is possible on compatible setups. Both the TV and the source device need to support the same route.

DLNA

Sony’s support material describes accessing media on a home network from other DLNA-enabled devices, such as a computer or network storage. The TV and the source must both support DLNA, and the format list for DLNA is separate from the one for USB. A file that plays from USB may not play over DLNA, and the reverse is also possible.

Media server apps

Plex’s support page says its Smart TV app uses the playback systems that TV manufacturers supply. Formats that play from USB or DLNA may not be directly playable in the app. In those cases the server may need to stream or transcode the file, which depends on the server computer’s power and your network speed. Plex also publishes a separate list of supported Smart TV models, so check that list for your television before setting up the app.

Use an external media player

If the TV’s own player cannot handle a file, a separate device running a capable app can help. VideoLAN’s official VLC page lists VLC for Android TV with support for local media files, network streams, NAS and shared drives, and multiple subtitle and audio tracks. VideoLAN also notes that hardware decoding is not available on every device, so confirm that the box you buy supports the decoding your files need.

Google’s Android TV help notes that USB storage behavior can vary between TVs, so a USB drive that works on one TV may not behave the same way on another.

Compare the playback routes

Route Best for Check before relying on it
USB drive or external USB storage A single local file, with no network setup The TV supports video over USB; the container and codecs are on the model’s list; the file system and capacity work for that model (LG guidance: FAT32 or NTFS, up to 32 GB for a memory device or 2 TB for an external disk).
DLNA from a computer or network storage Files kept on another device in your home Both devices support DLNA; the format is on the TV’s DLNA list, which differs from the USB list (Sony Latin America Support).
Media server app (for example Plex) A browsable library with artwork and metadata The TV is on the app’s supported model list; some files are not directly playable and may be transcoded by the server (Plex Support).
External Android TV media player running VLC A TV whose built-in player cannot handle your files The device supports your connection type and decoding needs; hardware decoding is not available on every device (VideoLAN).

What the sources do not establish

None of the manufacturer or platform pages reviewed publishes a figure for how many TVs play a given format. The support material is model-specific, so a general claim that a format plays on smart TVs would go beyond what the sources show. Use your model’s own list as the deciding reference.

Keep personal video files separate from video you buy or rent through a streaming service. The steps above apply to files you own or store yourself, and streaming services use their own apps and licensing rules.
