The Outlast Trials supports solo play and co-op parties of up to four. In a regular co-op Trial, think of “roles” as temporary jobs—not fixed character classes: work the objective, watch nearby threats, and help a downed teammate when it is safe to do so. The route and hazards can change between runs, so coordinate around what your team finds rather than relying on a memorized path.
How to start a co-op session
Invite up to three friends for a party of four, or play with a smaller group. The game also supports solo play. For cross-platform friends, Red Barrels’ March 5, 2024 release notes say cross-play was supported and direct players to share their Outlast ID from the Social Menu to connect. That is the connection guidance published at that time; platform flows can change. The same notes said cross-progression was not supported then, which should not be treated as a current status claim.

The available guidance describes no mandatory co-op classes. Instead, divide immediate tasks and swap them as the Trial changes. One player might advance the objective while another watches the approach or calls out danger; when a teammate falls, someone can search for a Syringe and prepare a revive while another player distracts or interrupts a nearby threat if possible. These are practical assignments, not permanent roles such as healer, tank, or runner.

- Objective worker: makes progress on the current task and tells the group what is needed next.
- Lookout: watches nearby approaches and communicates threats while the group works.
- Rescue support: locates a Syringe and helps create an opening for a revive when a teammate is down.
Keep callouts short and specific: “Syringe here,” “enemy by the doorway,” “hold the objective while I revive,” or “regroup at the next safe room.” These are suggested phrases, not verified in-game commands or ping features.
How to revive a fallen teammate
The Epic Games Store survival guide says a fallen co-op teammate can be revived with a Syringe found in a glass case. It does not establish exact interaction timing, stock limits, or exceptions for every mode, so treat the Syringe as the basic co-op revive guidance rather than assuming details that are not documented here.
- Tell the team where the player fell and whether a threat is nearby.
- Look for a Syringe in a glass case.
- If danger is close, have a teammate distract or interrupt the threat while the rescuer approaches, when the situation allows.
- Revive the teammate with the Syringe, then regroup or resume the objective based on the current danger.
Red Barrels’ March 2024 version 1.0 notes also list a Self Revive Amp that resurrects its user after death once per Trial. That is a dated feature note, not a substitute for a co-op Syringe revive; current availability and mode eligibility are not established here.

Choose a Rig for the situation
The Epic Games Store guide describes four Rigs. Their uses suggest different kinds of support, but do not establish a universally best choice or required team composition.

| Heal | Restores the user and nearby teammates, making it a group-support option. |
| Stun | Provides a direct stun option for interrupting a threat. |
| X-Ray | Provides information gathering. |
Pick according to what your group needs on that run: interruption, nearby health support, or information. Blind may be useful when a revive is exposed, while Heal supports nearby teammates; neither description makes a Rig mandatory.

Adapt to the Trial instead of memorizing a route
Maps and broad objectives can recur, but routes, locked doors, available items, enemy placement, and some objective details vary. Learn the objective pattern, then search and navigate according to the layout you actually get.

- In “Grind the Bad Apples,” the objective pattern remains while details such as valves or games may vary.
As you move, tell teammates what you have found and where a route is blocked. A remembered objective can help the group understand what to do; a remembered route is not a guarantee that the next run will match.
How Invasion is different
Invasion is a distinct mode with formal roles, unlike the flexible task-sharing suggested for ordinary co-op. Red Barrels’ October 21, 2025 update describes Reagents as completing a Trial while facing the risk of player Imposters; Imposters infiltrate and try to kill all Reagents before they finish. The update says Invasion supports solo play and groups of two, three, or four. These mode-specific roles should not be confused with fixed classes in standard co-op.
