Play Metro 2033, then Metro: Last Light, then Metro Exodus, followed by Exodus’s two expansions. That is the order of Artyom’s story, and Deep Silver’s official story guide dates the three main games to 2033, 2034 and 2036. For most players the Redux versions of the first two games are the way to start.

Deep Silver’s own guide describes Metro 2033 as the beginning, Last Light as the continuation and Exodus as the journey beyond the Metro. There is no alternative order to weigh for the main trilogy: each game builds on the one before.

Where the expansions fit
Sam’s Story
Deep Silver describes it as taking place after the events of Metro Exodus, so it belongs at the very end of the sequence.
The Two Colonels
The official description does not name a specific point in the Exodus campaign where it slots in. Finish the main campaign first so the expansion doesn’t interrupt the main journey. Between the two expansions, the order is up to you; Sam’s Story is the only one the publisher explicitly places after Exodus.

Redux or original versions?
Metro Redux is a collection of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light in their definitive Redux editions. It is a convenient way to get the first two games together. The collection does not include Exodus, which you buy separately.
Buying the whole series
- Bundles: the Xbox Metro Saga Bundle listing includes Metro 2033 Redux, Metro: Last Light Redux, Metro Exodus, The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story, which covers everything above. Bundles and availability change by platform and region, so check your store’s current listing.
- Exodus Complete Edition: Deep Silver announced it as the base game plus both expansions, with physical versions for Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PS5 at the time of that announcement.
- What to compare: platform compatibility, physical versus digital, and whether both Exodus expansions are included.
What about Metro Awakening?
PLAION’s support catalogue lists Metro Awakening as a 2024 release for SteamVR, Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2. The official source doesn’t state its exact story setting, so this guide doesn’t assign it a chronological slot. If you are following Artyom’s main arc, treat it as an optional VR entry and finish the trilogy first.
