You can play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time today on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 through the Nintendo 64 Classics library, with a paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. If you already own a Nintendo 3DS copy or original Nintendo 64 hardware, those are other options. Nintendo’s announced Switch 2 edition is not available yet: its US store listing gives a release date of November 5, 2026.
Play it now on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
The most straightforward current route is the Nintendo 64 Classics library, which includes Ocarina of Time. It works on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, but access is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack—not a standalone game purchase. Nintendo says classic games require an active membership. Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 Classics catalog and Nintendo Australia’s service page describe the library and its membership requirement.
You can play offline, but Nintendo requires the console to connect online at least once every seven days to verify membership. The subscription must remain active for continued access; this is not a permanent digital purchase.
What you need
- A Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership on the Nintendo Account used to access the library.
- The Nintendo 64 Classics app, available through Nintendo’s service.
Nintendo describes save-anytime functionality and customizable controls for the classic games on Switch and Switch 2. A wireless Nintendo 64 controller is an optional accessory, not a requirement; Nintendo Australia lists it for members. Check your regional Nintendo store for current availability and compatibility details.

Should you wait for the Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo’s US store lists a separate Ocarina of Time edition for Nintendo Switch 2, with a release date of November 5, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, it is announced but not yet playable. The listing describes rebuilt visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and updated movement and camera controls, as well as a physical edition. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 edition listing for the announcement.
If you want to start now, use the N64 Classics version. If the revised presentation and controls matter more to you than playing immediately, you can wait for the announced release. The Switch 2 edition is a distinct option; it should not be confused with the N64 game currently available through the Classics library.
Other ways to play
| Route | What to know |
|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS: Ocarina of Time 3D | Nintendo describes updated 3D visuals, refined gameplay, touch-based inventory and motion controls. New digital purchases on the 3DS eShop ended March 27, 2023, so this route is for people who already own it or find a legitimate used physical copy. Nintendo’s 3DS title page identifies the game and features; Nintendo’s eShop closure FAQ covers the end of new purchases. |
| Original Nintendo 64 | The original game was released for Nintendo 64. This option requires the console and a cartridge; Nintendo’s official page identifies the platform but does not establish current used-game stock or prices. Nintendo UK’s game page lists the original release and historic platform versions. |
| Legacy Wii or Wii U ownership | Nintendo UK also lists historic releases for these systems, but Wii U and 3DS eShop purchases have closed. Treat these as options only if you already have legitimate access, not as simple new purchases. Nintendo UK’s game page notes the legacy platforms. |
Choose the version that fits your situation
- You want to play today and own a Switch: use the N64 Classics library if you have, or choose to get, the required Expansion Pack membership.
- You want revised visuals and controls and can wait: watch for the Switch 2 edition listed for November 5, 2026.
- You already own a 3DS copy: play Ocarina of Time 3D on compatible 3DS-family hardware; it has its own presentation and touch-based inventory.
- You have original N64 hardware: a legitimate cartridge lets you play the original version, but current second-hand availability and pricing vary and are not established by Nintendo’s listing.
Regional catalogs, membership pricing, accessory stock and compatibility details can differ. Confirm the service and purchase information in your own country’s Nintendo store before subscribing or buying hardware.
