You can play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on a Nintendo Switch-family console through the Nintendo 64 Classics library with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. On PC, the unofficial Ship of Harkinian project offers another route, but its documentation requires a legally acquired game ROM. A previously owned or used copy of Ocarina of Time 3D is an option for Nintendo 3DS-family systems. Nintendo’s updated physical Switch 2 edition is listed for November 5, 2026, so it is not yet available as of October 7, 2026.
Which ways can you play Ocarina of Time?
The right route depends on your hardware and whether you want the original Nintendo 64 version, the 3DS remake, or Nintendo’s announced updated Switch 2 edition.

Nintendo’s support guidance says classic games require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership; N64 Classics access specifically requires the Expansion Pack.
How to play the N64 version on Switch
- On your Switch-family console, open Nintendo Switch Online and select Nintendo Classics.
- Choose the Nintendo 64 library and download its application if it is not already installed.
- Make sure the Nintendo Account used for the console has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Open the N64 Classics application and select The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics access instructions give this app path. Check the catalog for your account’s region, since availability and features can differ. If you play offline, Nintendo says the game can still be accessed, but the console needs an internet connection at least once every seven days to validate membership. If membership expires, Nintendo Support says classic games require an active membership to access.

What changes in the announced Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo’s U.S. listing describes a physical Switch 2 edition with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. It lists November 5, 2026 as the release date. Because that date had not arrived on October 7, 2026, treat the edition as forthcoming rather than a way to play today. How to play Ocarina of Time on PC
Ship of Harkinian is an unofficial PC port project. Its documentation says you need a legally acquired Ocarina of Time ROM; the project extracts the game’s copyrighted assets from that file. Obtain no ROM from unauthorized download sites, and do not assume that copying or downloading a ROM is lawful in every jurisdiction or circumstance. Nintendo UK states that purchases through the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops ended on March 27, 2023. Its Ocarina of Time 3D page identifies the game as a 3DS-family release, but that page does not mean a new digital purchase is still available. The practical route is compatible 3DS-family hardware and a legitimate copy already owned or obtained second-hand. For a used copy or system, check the region, condition, and compatibility before buying.

Which route should you choose?
- Choose Switch N64 Classics if you want the documented official route available now and have, or are willing to maintain, the required Expansion Pack membership.
- Consider Ship of Harkinian on PC if you want a PC setup and can meet the project’s ROM requirement using a legally acquired copy.
- Choose 3DS if you specifically want the Ocarina of Time 3D remake and can access compatible hardware and a legitimate copy.
- Wait for the Switch 2 edition if its announced visual, audio, and control changes are what you want; Nintendo’s listed release date is November 5, 2026.
