To play Spotify on another device, start a song or podcast, open Connect device in Spotify’s playback controls, and select the destination. For the first connection to a speaker, Spotify says your phone or computer and the speaker must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Spotify Connect then lets one device remotely control playback on another.
How to connect Spotify to another device
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the speaker, TV, or other destination supports Spotify Connect. If you are unsure, check Spotify’s compatibility information or ask the device’s manufacturer.
- Join the same Wi-Fi network for the first speaker connection. Connect the device running Spotify and the speaker to the same network.
- Start playback. Open Spotify on your phone or computer and play something.
- Open the device list. Tap or click Connect device, shown as a device icon in the playback controls.
- Choose the destination. Select the speaker or other compatible device. Playback moves there, while Spotify on your phone or computer remains the remote control.
After playback has been paused for more than 10 minutes, Spotify says you may need to reconnect. See Spotify’s Connect instructions for device-specific details.
Why your device may not appear
A missing destination can be caused by the device name, sign-in status, network, browser, or local-network permissions. Try the relevant checks below.
Check for duplicate names or sign-in status
- If several devices have the same name, select them one at a time to identify the right one.
- Try signing in to Spotify directly on the destination. Spotify says a signed-in device may appear in the app even when it is not on the same Wi-Fi network.
Check Local device visibility
In the Spotify mobile app, open Settings > Apps and devices. Turning off Local device visibility lets the app see devices that are not currently on the same Wi-Fi. If you want the device list limited to devices on your local network, turn this setting on instead.

Check web player and iPhone settings
- Web player: Spotify lists devices already logged in, and Google Cast devices on the current network when you use Chrome. If the destination is missing, try the Spotify app.
- iPhone: Allow Spotify to access the local network at iPhone Settings > Spotify > Local Network.
What to try when Spotify Connect will not work
If the device appears but playback does not connect, Spotify recommends these troubleshooting steps:
- Restart Spotify, the destination speaker or smart display, and the phone or computer running Spotify.
- Update the Spotify app and the destination device’s software.
- Put the devices on the same Wi-Fi network, then restart the Wi-Fi router or try another network.
- On Android TV, allow Spotify to display over other apps in the TV’s special app access settings.
What to do about unfamiliar devices
A device you do not recognize may belong to someone else using the same network, or your Spotify account may still be signed in on a device you used previously. To limit the mobile app’s device list to local devices, turn on Local device visibility under Settings > Apps and devices.

If you suspect someone else has access to your account, log out of the unfamiliar device, unlink Spotify from the manufacturer’s app if applicable, and use Spotify’s account page to sign out everywhere. Reset your password if appropriate. Spotify’s Connect support page covers these account and device steps.

Spotify lists Connect, voice assistants, Bluetooth, AUX or USB, Chromecast Audio, and Apple AirPlay as separate ways to play Spotify on speakers. Which works depends on the equipment you already have and what the speaker supports.

These are distinct playback methods, not different names for Connect. If you already own a compatible speaker, you may not need additional equipment; a generic “Wi-Fi speaker” label does not establish Spotify Connect compatibility. Spotify’s speaker support page lists the available methods.

On iPhone, use the Spotify app’s volume slider to adjust Connect playback. Spotify says Apple discontinued the technology that allowed iPhone hardware volume buttons to control Connect volume.
