On PS5, play the PS4 edition of Shadow of the Colossus; on PS4, play that same PS4 remake. To play the earlier PS3 remaster, use a PS3: PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. A PS4 disc works on PS5 only if the console has a disc drive.
Which version works on each console?
| Console | Version to play | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | PS4 edition | Sony lists the PS4 game as playable on PS5 through backward compatibility. A PS4 disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive. |
| PS4 | PS4 edition | This is the remake released for PS4, not the older PS3 remaster. |
| PS3 | PS3 remaster | The remaster is associated with The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection. It requires PS3 hardware; check your local market for availability. |
Sony’s store listing identifies the game as a PS4 title released February 6, 2018, and confirms PS5 compatibility. It does not identify a separate PS5 edition or a PS5-specific upgrade. Sony notes that some PS4 features may be unavailable on PS5 and recommends installing current PS5 system software.

How to play the PS4 edition on PS5
Digital copy
- Open your PS5 game library and find Shadow of the Colossus.
- Select the game and download it. The PS4 edition will run through PS5 backward compatibility.
PS4 disc
- Confirm that your PS5 has a disc drive. A PS4 game disc cannot be used on PS5 Digital Edition.
- Insert the disc, select the game hub, and install any required update.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you play; the console uses it to verify the license.
Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance covers supported PS4 discs and digital games. It lists DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 among controllers that work with supported PS4 games on PS5.
How the PS3 remaster differs from the PS4 remake
The PS3 release is a remaster; the PS4 release is a remake. Bluepoint Games president Marco Thrush explained the distinction in a PlayStation Blog interview: “With Shadow of the Colossus we’re working on a remake — it’s not really a remaster. One, because we already did the remaster.” Sony describes the PS4 project as rebuilt from the ground up by Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio.
Because these are distinct releases, choose based on the version you want to experience, not on an assumption that the PS4 edition is simply the PS3 release running at higher resolution. The PS3 version is part of The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection; availability varies by market.
What to expect from PS4 Pro modes
Sony’s 2017 PS4 Pro announcement described two modes: Cinematic, emphasizing image quality and targeting 30 fps, and Performance, targeting 60 fps. These are historical targets announced for PS4 Pro, not guarantees for every console, display, or PS5 setup.

No. Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. If you specifically want the PS3 remaster, you need PS3 hardware and a copy of the PS3 collection; a PS3 disc cannot substitute for the PS4 edition on PS5.
