To play an MCC campaign online, invite your friend from the main-menu Roster, then choose Campaigns and start a campaign or mission. For local campaign split-screen, use an Xbox with a controller for each player; MCC does not support split-screen on PC. Campaign co-op cannot currently be played cross-platform between PC and Xbox.
How to start an online campaign with a friend

Make sure each player owns or has access to Halo: The Master Chief Collection and has an Xbox network account. Add each other as Xbox network friends if needed.

From the MCC main menu, open the Roster. On Xbox, press X; on PC, select the Roster button at the top right.

Select your friend’s name and choose Invite Player. Have them accept the invitation. Their name should then appear in your game-session roster.

Choose Campaigns, select a game, and start a campaign or mission. For a first campaign, Halo Support recommends Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Quick Start begins a campaign, while Resume continues a prior session.
Online play requires an Xbox network account on supported platforms. Halo Support’s current guidance says Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players need an active Game Pass subscription for online play. Microsoft Store PC players do not need an active subscription, and Steam players do not need Xbox Live Gold. Check the current platform requirements if they change.

How to play campaign split-screen on Xbox

Connect a controller for each player and open the MCC main-menu Roster by pressing X.

On the second controller, press A. The second player can sign in with an Xbox profile or choose Add guest.

Once the second player appears in the roster, start a campaign.
A guest profile is temporary and does not retain save data after signing out. Although some MCC modes allow up to four people on one Xbox, campaign split-screen is limited to two players.

No. MCC supports cross-play in some online modes, but Halo Support says Campaign and Campaign Playlists currently cannot use cross-play. A PC player and an Xbox player therefore cannot join the same MCC campaign session. PC supports campaign co-op with friends over the Xbox network, but it does not support local split-screen.

These are campaign co-op caps published by Halo Support. For local split-screen campaign play, the limit is two players on Xbox, regardless of a title’s higher online co-op cap.
