GoldenEye 007 Plus is the fan project that documents third-person play, but its public materials describe a source build—not a ready-to-install PC package. They call for a legally obtained, unmodified US NTSC-U copy of the original Nintendo 64 game. The available project documentation does not confirm a turnkey installation route or verify that the current Plus snapshot works with a particular emulator or native PC port.
Which project adds third-person play?
The third-person feature belongs to GoldenEye 007 Plus, a community project built on the decompiled GoldenEye source. Its documentation describes an adjustable third-person camera and crosshair tuning, along with work on aiming visibility, projectile alignment, and transitions into and out of cutscenes. Those ongoing development notes mean the feature should not be treated as a finished, universally polished PC release.

The repository is a development/source project, not a conventional PC installer. Its public README describes building the project and lists Project64 with the GLideN64 graphics plugin as an emulator testing configuration. That is not a compatibility guarantee for the current source snapshot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat you need before attempting a build
- A legally obtained, unmodified US NTSC-U GoldenEye 007 ROM. The build instructions expect the file to be named
baserom.u.z64. - The project source and its documented build setup, available in the GoldenEye 007 Plus repository.
- A willingness to follow source-build instructions rather than download and run a verified beginner-friendly installer. The repository does not provide the retail ROM.
The build helper checks the expected retail SHA-1 before extraction and building. Use an original, unmodified ROM matching the project’s NTSC-U requirement; a different region, filename, or modified ROM may not pass that check. The repository’s README documents the source-build process and configuration, but this should not be mistaken for proof that a resulting build works on every PC setup.
#1 Best Overall
- This authentic renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only.
- It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
- This game is an authentic copy.
How to approach the documented source build
- Obtain the correct game file legally. Use an unmodified NTSC-U ROM and name it
baserom.u.z64, as required by the project’s build notes. GoldenEye 007 Plus does not distribute the game. - Get the project source and read its current build instructions. Start from the README in the GoldenEye 007 Plus repository. Follow the documented build settings and helper script for the checked-out source rather than assuming a prebuilt installer exists.
- Build and launch only through a configuration you can verify. The README mentions Project64 with GLideN64 for emulator testing, but does not certify that combination for the current development snapshot. Treat successful compilation and runtime compatibility as separate questions.
- If the game world is black, check the graphics-plugin setting. The project notes identify “Force depth buffer clear = ON” in GLideN64 as a diagnostic setting for black-world symptoms. A graphics-setting issue can be separate from a game-code regression; changing it does not establish that the overall build is fully validated.
How the PC options differ
| Option | What it is | Third-person Plus support | Practical qualification |
| GoldenEye 007 Plus | Decompilation-based community mod with a source build | Documents the third-person camera and related tuning | Requires an unmodified NTSC-U ROM; no verified beginner installer or end-user compatibility route is documented. |
| 1964 GEPD Edition | A separate emulator build modified for GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, and ROM hacks | Compatibility with the current Plus snapshot is not confirmed by the available project documentation. | The project was archived on 2026-09-01. Its releases include emulator bundles, including a Steam Deck bundle, and exclude ROM files. |
| GoldenEye 007 PC Port | A separate native port of the original N64 game | The port documentation does not describe the Plus third-person camera. | Its v0.4.0 README, dated 2026-09-28, documents Windows and Linux support, including Steam Deck, and requires a supported US NTSC ROM. |
| DesktopGoldenEye | A Windows launcher built around 1964 GEPD | It does not document a Plus installation route. | Its v0.1 documentation requires a user-supplied unmodified US ROM and says it does not yet ship a public mod loader. |
The PC port README describes mouse and keyboard, controller, widescreen, and a 60 fps campaign for that port. Those are claims about the separate native port, not about GoldenEye 007 Plus. Likewise, 1964 GEPD’s availability for older mods does not demonstrate that it supports the current Plus source snapshot.
What not to mistake for this mod
GoldenEye 007 Plus is not GoldenEye: Source. GoldenEye: Source is a separate multiplayer project built with the Source SDK; its FAQ says its current SDK path is Windows-only and that the project has no plan for a single-player mode. It is not the original N64 game with the Plus third-person camera.

What can—and cannot—be promised
You can verify that GoldenEye 007 Plus documents third-person gameplay and a source-build path requiring a legally obtained, unmodified NTSC-U ROM. You cannot rely on the cited project materials for a one-click PC installation, or assume the current Plus snapshot is supported by 1964 GEPD, DesktopGoldenEye, or the native PC port. If you need a documented ready-to-run PC route, the separate port may be an option for standard original-game play, but its README does not claim the Plus mod’s third-person feature.
