To play a free-to-play Steam game with friends, first check whether it has its own online co-op or PvP mode. If it does, install the same game and use its in-game party, lobby, matchmaking, or invite controls. If it instead supports local multiplayer and Steam Remote Play Together, one person can host the game and invite others through Steam; the host runs the game while guests join the streamed session.
Choose how you’ll play together
Free-to-play describes a game’s price, not its multiplayer options. The game’s Steam store page and in-game menus are the best places to check which route it supports.
| Question | Game’s online multiplayer | Steam Remote Play Together |
|---|---|---|
| What must the game support? | An online co-op or PvP mode. | Local multiplayer and Remote Play Together support. |
| Who runs the game? | Follow that game’s requirements. | One host launches and runs it. |
| Who needs to own or install it? | Game-specific; check its listing and rules. | Steam says the host owns and runs the game. Steam’s 2021 invite instructions say only the host needs to own and install it. |
| How do you invite friends? | Use the game’s lobby, party, matchmaking, or invite tools. | Launch the supported game, then invite from Steam Friends. |
| What inputs can players use? | Depends on the game. | Steam describes controllers, shared keyboard and mouse control, and some mobile touch input. |
| Key limitation | Menus, requirements, and player limits vary by game. | It does not work for games that lack the feature or local multiplayer. |
Use the game’s online co-op or PvP
When a game offers online multiplayer, use that mode first: each friend follows the game’s own installation and account requirements, then joins the same party, room, lobby, or match using its in-game instructions. There is no universal Steam invite menu for every game, and the available modes and player caps are set by the game.
For example, a Steam store page may identify online PvP or co-op and describe friend features or custom rooms. Check the listing’s current availability before relying on a particular game as an example; store information can change.

Use Steam Remote Play Together for supported local multiplayer
Remote Play Together is a different route from a game’s native online multiplayer. Steam describes it as a way for one player to own and run a supported game while inviting others to join the streamed session. It is intended for local multiplayer games that support the feature, not every free-to-play game.
- Check the game’s Steam store page for local multiplayer and Remote Play Together support.
- The host installs and launches the game, then opens Steam Friends and sends an invite. Steam’s Remote Play page describes launching a supported game and inviting players from the Friends List.
- Friends accept the invitation and connect through a supported Steam or Steam Link route for their device. Steam’s March 25, 2021 announcement says guests can join using Steam or the Steam Link app.
- Choose inputs the game supports. Players can use their own controllers; Steam also describes shared keyboard or mouse access, and its 2021 instructions mention touchscreen input on a phone or tablet. The announcement calls a USB controller useful for a computer guest, but a controller is not necessarily required.
Steam’s feature page describes up to four additional players, or more with fast connections. Treat that as Steam’s feature description, not a guaranteed capacity for every game, device, or connection.

Fix common invite and connection problems
- The invite option is missing: Check that the game supports both local multiplayer and Remote Play Together. A free-to-play label alone does not indicate either feature.
- A friend cannot join: Confirm the friend is using a supported Steam or Steam Link path for their device, and check the game’s own support information for requirements.
- Players cannot control the game: Check which inputs the game supports and how the host shares keyboard or mouse access. Try a controller if needed; compatible mobile touch input may also be available.
- You expected Remote Play Together to enable online play: It streams a supported local multiplayer session from the host. It does not replace native online multiplayer or add multiplayer support to games that lack it.
