Cortex is a small Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 multiplayer map for 6v6 and 2v2. Its underpass is the central control point; the exposed skybridge offers a long sightline, while the Reactor vent, vat chambers, and parked vehicles create routes and cover for closer fights. Here’s how to read the layout and use each area, based on Activision’s official Cortex map guide.
What kind of map is Cortex?
Activision places Cortex in a cliffside Guild research compound. The map’s named spaces include experimental vat chambers, an adjoining autopsy and morgue, an underpass at the heart of the layout, and a narrow skybridge above the water. The official multiplayer page lists Cortex for both 6v6 and 2v2; launch materials classify it as small-sized for both formats.
That combination makes the main decision less about crossing a large map and more about choosing between a contested central route, an exposed long lane, and tight interior spaces. The layout details and tactical suggestions below come from Activision’s map guide, not independent match testing.
How should you play the underpass and middle?
The underpass is the key area to contest if you want to influence movement through the center. Activision’s guide recommends playing the junction between the underpass and skybridge, using the vehicle there to take shots and then retreating before opponents can respond.

An alcove near this area can help you avoid detection from players advancing along the skybridge. Use it to break their view or reposition rather than staying exposed at the junction. The guide’s central principle is to control the underpass while keeping an escape or alternate route available.
When is the skybridge worth crossing?
The skybridge is a narrow, exposed route with a long view over the water. A low wall north of it provides a sightline down nearly the whole map, according to Activision; the guide recommends a scoped weapon for distant targets. That is official guidance, not a guarantee of weapon performance or a claim about the map’s competitive balance.

Because the lane is exposed, avoid treating it as a safe way to rotate. Check the long sightline before crossing, and consider using the vent route if it is open and provides a better approach for your position.
How do you open the vent shortcut?
The vent connects the Reactor room with the north end of the skybridge. Activision says to shoot or melee the vent covers to open the passage. Once open, it can serve as a shortcut or an ambush route, so account for opponents using either end.

- Shoot or melee the cover to open the passage.
- Use the connection to rotate between the two areas or watch for enemies approaching through it.
How should you approach the vat chambers?
The red vats make movement harder to read and the Vat Chamber is a tight space. Activision’s guide recommends shotguns for close encounters there. Treat the large vats as obstacles that can conceal an opponent, and check around them before committing to a push.
Where can you find cover near the vehicles?
The parked vehicles offer another way to manage exposure. The guide notes that the vehicle-bed ledges provide cover and a weapon-mounting position. It also suggests going prone to reduce your profile before counterattacking. Use the cover to take a moment or challenge an angle, but be ready to move if opponents begin targeting your position.

- Contest the underpass and nearby junction to influence movement through the center.

- Expect close fights around the vats, and use vehicle-bed ledges for cover where available.
