Windows 11 can play ordinary audio CDs, but the correct app may not be installed. The most reliable built-in route is Windows Media Player Legacy; the simplest alternative is VLC. You also need a working internal or USB optical drive—many newer laptops do not include one.

Insert the disc after connecting the drive, then use one of the methods below. An audio CD is not the same as a data CD containing MP3 files, and neither is the same as a DVD-Video disc.

Before you start: check the disc and drive

  • Audio CD: contains music tracks and normally holds up to about 80 minutes of audio.
  • Data CD: contains files such as MP3 or WMA files. The player must support the file format.
  • DVD: is a different optical-disc format. Windows Media Player Legacy does not include DVD-Video playback.

If your PC has no optical drive, connect a USB CD/DVD drive and wait for it to appear in File Explorer. If the drive is missing from File Explorer entirely, skip to the troubleshooting section.

Method 1: Play the CD with Windows Media Player Legacy

Windows 11 does not guarantee that the older Windows Media Player is installed. Microsoft now calls it Windows Media Player Legacy, and on supported editions it is an optional feature.

This user-friendly design ensures quick setup for both beginners and professionals.
  • 【FAST & STABLE DATA TRANSMISSION】 Featuring dual interfaces (USB 3.0 and Type-C), this optical drive supports data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. To ensure a reliable connection, please connect it directly to your computer. The drive supports multiple disc formats such as DVD+R, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW. Please note: It does NOT support DVD-RAM, Blu-ray (BD) discs, or certain proprietary formats. Maximum DVD read speed is 8x, and maximum CD read/write speed is 24x.
  • 【UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY】 Compatible with Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 7, Linux, and all macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) for MacBook Air/Pro, iMac, Mac mini; NOT for iPad/iPhone/Apple TV/ChromeOS; for Mac, insert disc FIRST, connect directly to USB port (use a POWERED USB‑C hub for M1/M2/M3 to avoid insufficient power), and open media with VLC Player (Apple DVD Player not supported). Works with most computers from brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Samsung. 👉 Important: Designed specifically for computers. It is NOT compatible with TVs, tablets, game consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox), car stereos, or standalone Blu-ray players.

If the drive is not recognized or a disc cannot be read, try restarting your computer or testing with a different, standard CD-R or DVD-R disc. The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

Install Windows Media Player Legacy

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Optional Features.
  3. Under Add an optional feature, select View features.
  4. Search for Windows Media Player Legacy.
  5. Select its checkbox, choose Next, and select Add.
  6. When installation finishes, open Start and search for Windows Media Player.

Do not confuse this application with the newer Media Player app. Microsoft documents CD ripping and the traditional Windows Media Player CD workflow under Windows Media Player Legacy. The newer app is a separate application.

Start playback

  1. Insert the audio CD into the optical drive.
  2. Open Windows Media Player from the Start menu.
  3. Select the CD or its album name in the player’s navigation area.
  4. Select a track, or select Play to start the album.

If Windows shows an AutoPlay prompt, choose Windows Media Player. If no prompt appears, opening the player manually and selecting the disc is usually enough.

Rip the CD instead of playing it from the disc

For regular listening, copying the tracks to the PC can be more convenient than keeping the disc inserted. In Windows Media Player, insert the CD and select Rip CD. The tracks are saved automatically in the Music folder unless you change the destination in the player’s Rip settings tab.

Ripping is different from playing: it creates files on the computer, while playback reads the tracks directly from the optical disc.

Method 2: Play the CD with VLC

VLC provides an explicit disc-selection route and is useful when Windows Media Player is unavailable or does not start the CD correctly.

  4. In the Open Disk dialog, select Audio CD.
  5. Check the Disc Device drop-down and select the drive containing the CD.
  6. Select Play.

VLC’s disc dialog also lists DVD, Blu-ray, and SVCD/VCD. Make sure Audio CD is selected for a standard music CD. If VLC does not identify the disc automatically, manually select the correct drive letter in Disc Device.

Configure Windows 11 AutoPlay

AutoPlay controls what Windows offers when you insert a disc or connect removable media. It is not required for playback; you can always open Windows Media Player or VLC yourself.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay.
  3. Turn on Use AutoPlay for all media and devices.
  4. Look for the CD-related action and choose an available player, such as Windows Media Player or VLC.

The available actions depend on the applications installed and the way Windows identifies the disc. AutoPlay may show separate choices for CDs and other removable devices. Also, this setting only concerns inserted media and connected devices; it does not control media that starts automatically inside a web browser.

What to do when the CD will not play

The drive appears, but Windows does not offer a playback action

Install Windows Media Player Legacy using Settings > System > Optional Features > View features, then try again. Alternatively, use VLC’s manual route: Media > Open Disc > Audio CD, followed by selecting the correct drive.

If File Explorer shows folders rather than music tracks, Windows may be treating the disc as a data disc. Check whether it is a data CD, a burned disc, or a disc with a format the player does not support.

The player opens, but the CD spins without starting

  1. Check that the optical drive appears in File Explorer.
  2. Try playing a local audio file in the same player. If local files also fail, the problem is probably with the player, audio output, codecs, or a driver rather than the CD.
  3. Try a second factory-pressed audio CD. If only one disc fails, clean it and inspect it for scratches.
  4. If factory CDs work but a CD-R or CD-RW does not, the burned disc may be incompatible, finalized incorrectly, or defective.
  5. Try VLC and manually select Audio CD and the drive letter.

Windows Media Player is installed but malfunctioning

Windows includes repair controls for the application:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Windows Media Player.
  3. Select its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
  4. Select Repair. If that does not help, select Reset.

Repair attempts to fix the installation. Reset removes custom settings and preferences, but it does not remove your media files or library files.

The optical drive is missing from File Explorer

First check the USB connection, power switch, and cable if you are using an external drive. For an internal drive, open Device Manager and expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.

If the drive has a device error, right-click it, select Uninstall device, and restart Windows. Windows should attempt to reinstall the device driver. Reported Device Manager codes associated with this type of problem include 19, 31, 32, 39, and 41.

If the drive remains absent after a restart, test another USB port or cable, test the drive on another PC, and try a different disc. These checks help distinguish a Windows configuration problem from a failed optical drive.

Windows 11 CD playback: common misconceptions

Claim What is actually true
Windows 11 cannot play audio CDs. Incorrect. Windows Media Player Legacy and VLC can play standard audio CDs.
Windows Media Player is always installed. Outdated. Windows Media Player Legacy may need to be added as an optional feature.
Media Player and Windows Media Player are the same app. They are separate applications with different names and capabilities.
Windows Media Player Legacy plays DVDs. Microsoft states that DVD playback is not included. That limitation does not prevent ordinary audio-CD playback.

FAQ

Can Windows 11 play an audio CD without extra software?

Yes, if Windows Media Player Legacy is available and installed as an optional feature. Go to Start > Settings > System > Optional Features > View features, search for Windows Media Player Legacy, and add it.

Why does my CD show files instead of music tracks?

It may be a data CD rather than an audio CD, or Windows may not be identifying the disc correctly. Try VLC using Media > Open Disc, select Audio CD, and choose the correct optical drive.

Why is the new Media Player app not playing my CD?

The newer Media Player app is separate from Windows Media Player Legacy. Use Windows Media Player Legacy for Microsoft’s documented CD playback and ripping workflow, or use VLC.

Can I play a CD with VLC on Windows 11?

Yes. Open Media > Open Disc, choose Audio CD in the Open Disk dialog, select the drive under Disc Device, and select Play.

Will resetting Windows Media Player delete my songs?

Microsoft’s reset option removes custom settings and preferences, not your media files or library content. Rebuilding the library database can change the player’s catalog, but it does not delete the original music files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does one burned CD fail while other CDs work?

CD-R and CD-RW media can be incompatible with a drive or may be defective or incorrectly finalized. Test a factory-pressed audio CD and try the burned disc in another player.

The Bottom Line

For the built-in Windows route, install Windows Media Player Legacy through Settings > System > Optional Features, insert the disc, and select it in the player. For a direct manual alternative, use VLC: Media > Open Disc > Audio CD, choose the optical drive, and select Play. If neither application can use the disc, determine whether the issue is the CD, the optical drive, AutoPlay, or the player installation before replacing anything.
