You can prepare an Xbox Series X for Blu-ray playback while online, but the available official information does not confirm that an installed Blu-ray Player app will play movies offline in every case. Xbox says the console supports Blu-ray movie discs and requires the Blu-ray Player app, downloaded from the console’s Store. To reduce the risk of being unable to watch during travel or an outage, install the app and test your specific disc before disconnecting.
What Xbox confirms about Blu-ray playback
Xbox Wire’s FAQ, published November 12, 2020, says Xbox Series X can play DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs, and that the Blu-ray Player app must be downloaded from the console’s Store to play movie discs. Read the Xbox Wire FAQ.
The FAQ does not say whether the app needs an internet connection at first launch, whether it works offline after installation, or whether playback behavior varies by disc, region, or app version. So there is no source-backed guarantee that a Blu-ray will play offline—or that internet is always required.
Prepare and test the console before going offline
- While connected to the internet, open the Store on your Xbox Series X and download the Blu-ray Player app. Xbox identifies this app as necessary for movie-disc playback.
- Insert the Blu-ray you plan to watch and try playing it while the console is still online.
- Disconnect the console from the network and try that same disc again. This is a precautionary test, not a guarantee for other discs, later app versions, or different regions.
If the disc plays offline, you have confirmed playback for that disc and setup at that time. The test cannot establish that every movie disc will behave the same way.

If the disc will not play offline
- Reconnect the console if possible and check whether the Blu-ray Player app needs an update.
- Try the disc again while online to help determine whether the problem is specific to offline playback or occurs in both conditions.
- Consult Xbox Support’s DVD and Blu-ray setup and Disc and Blu-ray settings pages for current help. The specific setup instructions on those pages are not established here.
Check that your console has a disc drive
These steps apply to Xbox Series X hardware with a disc drive. Microsoft’s Series X product page lists an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc player as a console feature: Xbox Series X product details. A disc-playing feature on Series X does not mean every Xbox Series console has a drive.

- The new DVD drive will need to be “flashed” with your console’s security key or will need to have your old drive's board swapped into the new replacement drive. That's Mean That You need to transfer the PCB board from the old one to the new one since it's paired to the Xbox.
