Yes—if your PS5 has a compatible disc drive. A drive-equipped PS5 can play standard Blu-ray movies, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, and DVDs. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc support; certain later Digital Edition models can use a separately sold drive, but compatibility depends on the console’s CFI model.
Which PS5 models can play Blu-ray movies?
A PS5 needs an installed disc drive to play movies from physical discs. Sony says to insert a Blu-ray Disc or DVD into the console; Disc Player then appears in the media home. Sony’s disc playback support page lists supported media and limitations.
- PS5 with a built-in disc drive: Plays supported Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, and DVD video discs.
- Original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition: Does not support disc-based games or media.
- Specified later Digital Edition models: Can use Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1 disc drive. Check the console’s CFI model number before purchasing; the drive is not compatible with every Digital Edition.
Sony identifies CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups for the add-on drive in its support information, while its US product page specifies compatible slim Digital Edition model groups. Consult the model listing on Sony’s PS5 disc-drive setup page and the US CFI-ZDD1 product page; do not rely only on the “Digital Edition” name.

Yes. Sony lists both standard Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray playback for PS5 models with a disc drive. Ultra HD Blu-ray is the physical 4K movie-disc format; it is supported separately from ordinary Blu-ray. Sony also lists DVD video playback. The supported formats include BD-ROM and BD-R/RE, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and AVCHD, subject to the exclusions below.

For the console’s listed playback capability, see Sony’s PS5 FAQ. A disc-drive-equipped console is required for each of these physical formats.
Does PS5 play 3D Blu-ray?
No. Sony says PS5 does not support 3D stereoscopic output, so a 3D Blu-ray movie will not play in 3D on the console. This limitation is distinct from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray support. Sony’s PS5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020, states that 3D stereoscopic output is not supported.

Does Blu-ray playback require an internet connection?
Sony requires an internet connection to pair the optional CFI-ZDD1 drive with a compatible console during setup. That is a setup requirement, not a statement that every subsequent movie-disc playback session requires internet. Sony’s drive setup instructions describe the pairing step.
Sony’s CFI-21XX manual also notes that some PS4-format Blu-ray functionality may be absent on PS5, that a system software update may be needed, and that internet is required for that compatibility note. Those qualifications concern that specific PS4-format functionality; they do not establish that ordinary Blu-ray movie playback always needs a connection. See the PS5 manuals.

Which discs may not work?
Having a compatible drive does not guarantee playback of every disc. Sony lists these unsupported media or conditions:
- CDs
- BD-RE version 1.0
- BD-R/RE XL
- DVDs that have not been finalized
Scratches, dust, recording quality, the recording device, manufacturing variation, or encoding can also prevent an otherwise supported disc from playing. Sony cautions against inserting 8 cm, non-circular, cracked, deformed, repaired, or labeled discs because they may damage the console. Check Sony’s disc playback guidance if a listed format fails.

Will an imported Blu-ray play on PS5?
Not necessarily. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual explains that BD and DVD region codes may be assigned according to a disc’s geographic distribution. It says the console’s BD/DVD region code can be changed to match a disc’s code up to four times. Check the movie disc’s region and your console’s region setting rather than assuming every imported Blu-ray will play. See the console manual for region-code details.
