Blood Bowl is fantasy football played in alternating team turns: coaches move and use their players, manage the risk of failed actions, and try to finish an action with the ball carrier standing in the opposing End Zone. A turnover can end a team’s turn early, so the order of your actions matters.
There is an important edition caveat for Blood Bowl 3 players: Cyanide announced that a free 2026 update would evolve the game into Warhammer Blood Bowl, but its announcement does not confirm that the update has shipped or establish the live game’s exact rules. The explanations below describe the standard tabletop sequence in a Third Season Edition rules reference; digital modes and the current game may differ.
How do turns work in Blood Bowl?
In the tabletop rules reference, a standard match has two halves, with each coach taking eight team turns per half. The teams alternate turns while one kicks and the other receives; play continues until a touchdown or the end of the half. The team with more touchdowns when the match ends wins. Digital matches may use different settings or special-mode rules.

The active coach chooses a player, takes an action with that player, then chooses another player. Under the cited tabletop reference, each player can take one action in a team turn. The coach does not have to use every player before the turn ends, and a turnover can cut the turn short.

What actions can players take?
Move, Block, Blitz, and Pass are the core action types to understand first. This is a beginner overview, not a complete list of every special action, skill, or exception in the rules.
| Action | What it does | Team-turn limit in the cited tabletop reference |
|---|---|---|
| Move | The player moves across the pitch. | One action per player in a team turn; no team-wide cap stated for Move. |
| Block | The player makes a block against an opponent. | One action per player in a team turn; no team-wide cap stated for Block. |
| Blitz | The player moves and makes one block as part of the action. | At most one Blitz action per team turn. |
| Pass | The player moves before attempting to pass the ball. | At most one Pass action per team turn. |
These limits come from a secondary-hosted Third Edition rules reference. Skills, the complete rules, or the digital implementation may affect particular cases, so check the applicable current rules when an edge case matters.

What causes a turnover?
A turnover ends the active team’s turn before all its players have necessarily acted. The tabletop reference lists these examples:

- A teammate fails to catch a pass.
- A player fails to pick up the ball.
- A touchdown is scored.
- The team turn’s time limit expires.
That makes the order of actions important. If a risky ball action fails and causes a turnover, you may lose the chance to act with the rest of your team that turn. Rules, skills, and game implementation can create exceptions, so treat these as examples rather than a complete ruling for every situation.

How do you score a touchdown?
In the cited tabletop reference, a touchdown is scored when the ball carrier ends an action standing in the opposing team’s End Zone. Entering the End Zone alone is not enough if the player is knocked down before the action ends. When a touchdown is scored, the coach moves the score marker; the team with the most touchdowns at the end of the match wins.
A simple order for learning a turn
- Find the ball. Identify which team has possession and where the ball carrier is.
- Consider safer actions first. Look at the movement and blocking options available before attempting a risky pickup, pass, or scoring run.
- Plan for a possible turnover. A failed or dangerous action may end your team turn, so decide whether to attempt it before or after other players act.
- Finish the scoring action. For a touchdown under the cited tabletop rule, the ball carrier must end an action standing in the opposing End Zone.
This is a way to organize the rules, not a guarantee of success or an optimal tactic for every board position.

Blood Bowl 3 rules versus tabletop Third Season Edition
Do not assume that a tabletop rule automatically describes the current Blood Bowl 3 video game. Cyanide’s game page describes Blood Bowl as a turn-by-turn sport and strategy game. On 29 December 2025, the developer announced a free 2026 update that would evolve Blood Bowl 3 into Warhammer Blood Bowl and carry forward players’ existing purchases and unlocks. That announcement describes a planned update; it does not confirm a release date or the exact live ruleset.

For the tabletop game, Games Workshop describes the Third Season Edition rulebook as containing the rules needed to play, plus League and Matched Play instructions, team rosters, star players, and inducements. Games Workshop’s May 2026 designer FAQ and errata provides clarifications and errata for that edition. Consult both when playing tabletop Third Season Edition.
