On the VIZIO V-Series models covered by the cited manual, copy the video to a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32, connect it to the TV, then select the file with the remote or choose USB from SmartCast Home. The exact steps and supported formats can vary by model, so check the manual for your TV’s model number before troubleshooting compatibility.
Play a USB video on a VIZIO V-Series TV
The VIZIO V-Series manual describes the USB Media Player as a way to play video, music, and photos from a USB flash drive. Follow its documented procedure:
- Copy the video file to a USB flash drive.
- Format the drive as FAT32 and make sure the video has an extension supported by your TV model.
- Plug the drive into the TV’s USB port. Port location and the number of ports vary by model.
- Use the remote’s navigation keys to select the video, or open SmartCast Home and choose USB from the streaming icons along the bottom.
- When finished, turn the TV off before disconnecting the drive. The manual warns that removing it while the TV is on may damage the drive.
VIZIO Support is a starting point for finding product help; use your TV’s model number to locate the instructions that apply to your set.
Why a USB video may not play
The extension is only one part of compatibility
A file ending in MP4, AVI, or another familiar extension is not guaranteed to work. The container, video and audio encoding, resolution, bitrate, and USB device can all matter. The V-Series manual passage requires a supported extension but does not give a complete codec table, so it does not establish universal support for MP4 or any other format.

Check the manual for your exact model
VIZIO’s older XVT472SV manual illustrates how requirements can differ between TVs. Its listed combinations include AVI with H.264/AVC video and AAC audio up to 1920 × 1080; MP4 with MPEG-4 ASP video and AAC audio up to 1280 × 720; MOV with H.264/AVC and AAC up to 1920 × 1080; and MPG/MPEG and VOB with MPEG-2 and AC3 up to 1920 × 1080. These limits apply to that older model only, not to VIZIO TVs generally. The manual also cautions that a listed format may still fail, depending on the USB device, bitrate stream, and other characteristics of the content.
If the TV does not display the file, verify the drive format and the file’s container, codecs, and resolution against the manual for your TV’s model. The cited V-Series manual says its player is not designed for media from external hard drives, MP3 players, cameras, or smartphones; its procedure specifies a USB flash drive.

What the manuals do not establish for every VIZIO TV
The V-Series instructions are not a universal guide to every VIZIO Smart TV. The available VIZIO support information does not provide a single all-model USB compatibility table, and the TV model is unspecified here. As a result, a universal codec list, maximum drive capacity, and exact menu path for every set cannot be confirmed. For precise requirements, match the manual to the model number printed on your TV or shown in its settings.
