In Stardew Valley, ordinary trees and fruit trees follow different planting rules. Wild tree seeds such as acorns can be planted without watering or clearing nearby tiles; fruit saplings need an unobstructed 3×3 area until they mature. Use the right spacing for the tree you want, and you will avoid the most common growth problems.

Choose the right tree for the job

Plant wild trees for wood and other tree resources; plant fruit trees for seasonal fruit. Their placement and growth rules are different, so a layout that works for one type may not work for the other.

Space while growing No clear-area requirement, but a seedling cannot advance past stage 4 if a mature tree is in any of its eight adjacent tiles. Fertilizer Tree Fertilizer can be used on planted wild tree seeds or saplings. Tree Fertilizer does not work on fruit trees.
Fruit production Does not produce fruit Outdoors, produces in its associated season; in the Greenhouse or on Ginger Island, produces daily after maturity.

How to plant ordinary wild trees

Plant a seed on a valid tile

Plant an acorn, maple seed, pine cone, or mahogany seed in the ground. Wild tree seeds do not need watering or a clear surrounding area; they can even be planted on paved ground. The important spacing check is whether a seedling is next to a mature tree.

Prevent the stage 4 growth stall

A wild-tree seedling will not grow beyond stage 4 while a mature tree occupies any of its eight neighboring tiles, including diagonals. If a seedling appears stuck at stage 4, check all eight surrounding tiles and remove or relocate the mature tree beside it.

Speed eligible trees with Tree Fertilizer

Tree Fertilizer is a craftable item unlocked at Foraging level 7. Its recipe uses 5 Fiber and 5 Stone. Apply it to a wild tree seed or sapling after planting it in the ground. The Stardew Valley Wiki describes fertilized wild trees as advancing one growth stage per night except at stage 4, which takes two days; mahogany trees generally take longer. This is a game mechanic, not a guaranteed real-time schedule for every tree. Tree Fertilizer does not work on fruit trees or tea bushes. (Stardew Valley Wiki: Tree Fertilizer)

How to plant fruit trees without blocking growth

Center each sapling in a clear 3×3 area

Plant a fruit sapling directly on untilled ground, with the sapling in the center of a clear 3×3 square. Keep another fruit tree’s 3×3 growth area from overlapping that square. In practice, leave two tiles between fruit-tree trunks in each direction.

Keep the area clear until the tree matures

While the sapling is immature, keep objects, flooring or paths, and terrain features out of its 3×3 area. Newly spawned debris can also interfere with overnight growth. Grass, seed spots, and artifact spots are exceptions to the wiki’s definition of a clear area. Once the tree is mature, nearby objects and flooring no longer prevent it from producing fruit. Plant in any season and skip watering

Fruit trees take 28 days to mature, need no watering, and do not die in winter. You can plant a sapling in any season, including ahead of its fruiting season. Outdoors, a mature tree produces fruit only in its associated season, and fruit can accumulate for up to three days before harvest.

Fix common tree-growing problems

  • A wild sapling is stuck at stage 4: Check all eight adjacent tiles for a mature tree.
  • A fruit sapling says it did not grow overnight: Clear its entire 3×3 growth area of paths, flooring, objects, terrain features, and debris.
  • A mature fruit tree has no fruit: Check that it is mature and that it is the tree’s fruiting season. Trees in the Greenhouse and on Ginger Island produce daily after maturity.
  • Fertilizer did not speed up a fruit sapling: Tree Fertilizer only affects eligible wild trees, not fruit trees.
