Before deciding whether to start a player listed as a game-time decision, check your league’s lineup lock setting. If each player locks at kickoff, you can usually wait for newer status information while keeping an eligible, later-playing substitute ready. If the entire lineup locks when the first game begins, make your decision before that first kickoff.
Check when your league locks lineup changes
There is no universal fantasy-football lock rule. ESPN documents two options: individual players can lock when their games begin, or the entire roster can lock at the first game of the scoring period. Your league may use different settings, so check its rules or lineup settings before relying on a late swap.

ESPN’s Lineup and Roster Lock Times article, updated April 10, 2025, describes both settings. Its Setting Your Lineup guidance, updated August 11, 2026, says roster moves involving a player may be made until that player’s team is scheduled to begin its game. NFL Fantasy’s Official Rules 2024 likewise ties a status change to the scheduled start shown by NFL.com’s clock. These are platform-specific rules; follow the deadline shown by your own league, and do not assume there is a grace period.

- Set a valid lineup early. Fill every required slot with an eligible player so an unresolved decision does not leave an earlier player or an empty position in place.
- Identify a substitute for the uncertain player. Confirm the bench option is eligible for the same position or flex slot. League roster rules may require a corresponding move to make the swap.
- Compare both kickoff times. If you are relying on a late swap, the substitute’s game must start later than the uncertain player’s game. The substitute can lock when their own game begins.
- Check your league’s lock setting. A whole-roster lock means an early game can close changes for the entire scoring period; an individual-player lock may leave later players movable.
- Recheck status close to kickoff. Use current team and platform information, then make any needed move before the player’s game starts.
ESPN’s lineup instructions cover moves within eligible roster slots. Its fantasy guide says teams designate inactives 90 minutes before each game; treat that as a useful checkpoint, not a guarantee that every decision will be clear at that exact time. Interpret “questionable” cautiously
“Questionable” is a broad injury designation, not a precise probability that a player will be active or produce a useful fantasy score. Check the latest available team status and inactive information rather than treating the label alone as a forecast. ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury and inactive list; its Players on Injured Reserve (IR) support page also explains its injury-status information.
Waiting for newer information has a procedural advantage only when your league still permits the move: it may let you act on a more current availability update. The cited platform guidance does not establish that waiting produces better fantasy results than deciding earlier. Know what protection features can and cannot do
ESPN offers an optional Lineup Protection feature that may select an eligible, available bench replacement when a player is marked Out or IR and the feature is enabled. It is limited protection for those statuses, not a general-purpose lineup optimizer or a substitute for checking eligibility and lock times. Details are in ESPN’s Lineup Protection guide.
For a player who has already locked, ESPN separately documents Roster Adjustments After Players Have Locked. Do not assume a post-lock adjustment will be available in your league or that it permits a normal start/sit swap; check the applicable platform rules before kickoff.
