Place a Fios extender between your router and the room with weak Wi-Fi—close enough to keep a useful connection to the router, but far enough toward the problem area to extend coverage. There is no universal router-to-extender distance: use the My Verizon Wi-Fi Analyzer, where available, and your extender’s model-specific status lights to find a workable spot.

Find a position that can reach both sides

  1. Locate the weak-signal area. Use the Wi-Fi Analyzer in the My Verizon app, where available, to identify where the signal drops off. Verizon’s whole-home Wi-Fi guidance also notes that distance, walls, furniture, and building materials affect coverage; concrete and brick can weaken Wi-Fi.
  2. Start between the router and the weak area. The extender must still receive a usable connection from the router. Placing it inside a dead zone where it cannot connect well may simply extend a weak signal. Verizon’s Fios Extender guidance recommends a position between the router and the area with weak Wi-Fi.
  3. Fine-tune using the model’s indicators. For the access-point setup described in Verizon’s instructions, slow-blinking yellow means move closer to the router, fast-blinking yellow means move farther away, and solid white indicates the instructed position is reached. These light meanings are specific to that setup; check the instructions for your extender rather than applying them to every generation.
  4. Check coverage where you need it. After moving the extender, recheck the target room with the analyzer, if available. Adjust placement based on the result and the unit’s model-specific indicators.

Verizon does not state a universal distance in feet between a Fios router and extender. The right position depends on the layout and whether the extender can maintain a usable connection back to the router.

Place the extender to reduce interference

  • Keep the extender at least 10 feet from cordless phones and microwaves. This is Verizon’s placement guidance, not a universal performance threshold.
  • Avoid large metal objects and locations exposed to moisture, excessive dust, extreme cold, or heat.
  • Choose a central, elevated spot when practical, and avoid nearby interference sources such as TVs and microwaves.
  • For coverage toward a backyard, Verizon recommends placing the extender near an outer wall. Keep the device indoors.

Follow setup steps for your extender model

“Fios extender” can refer to devices from different generations, and placement instructions are not interchangeable. Check the exact router and extender models on Verizon’s current compatibility and setup information before buying or installing a unit.

E3200

For an E3200, pair it beside the gateway first. Then unplug it and move it to the selected position between the gateway and the weak-signal area, following Verizon’s E3200 setup instructions. Confirm router compatibility on Verizon’s current support page before purchasing.

Legacy network extenders

Some older models have different connection requirements. For example, Verizon’s WCB6200Q guidance requires a coax or Ethernet connection back to the router. Legacy Fios Network Extender guidance also describes placement in a room with a live coax or Ethernet outlet. Do not assume an older wired extender can be placed using the wireless method for a newer model.

Know what better placement can—and cannot—do

An extender is intended to improve coverage in areas the router does not reach well; it does not guarantee faster internet. Verizon says the Extender Mini is designed to extend coverage, not increase Wi-Fi speed, and that actual speeds vary with network and environmental factors. That limitation is stated for the Extender Mini; do not treat it as a model-specific speed promise for other extenders.

Verizon’s Fios Extender FAQs sum up the placement goal: “The Fios Extender should be placed between your Fios Router and in the area where your Wi-Fi signal is weak.”
