Start by confirming that your kit is the Science Fair 150-in-1 Electronic Project Kit, catalog 28-248, then find its matching manual before reconnecting anything. The original kit used spring clips rather than solder, and its documented power setup was one 9 V battery plus two AA cells. Because parts and revisions can differ among similarly named kits, identify the panel and components before replacing anything.
Confirm the kit is catalog 28-248
The closest match is Radio Shack’s Science Fair 150-in-1 Electronic Project Kit, catalog 28-248. A period manual index lists a dedicated manual under that name and number. Check the catalog number and the panel layout against the manual before buying replacement parts: later Radio Shack learning kits used similar names but could have different component sets.
The 1977 Radio Shack catalog describes 150 guided projects using parts pre-mounted in a fitted case. Connections were made with spring-clip connectors, and the manual was described as explaining projects in nontechnical terms with simple diagrams and schematics. The kit was specified to use one 9 V battery and two AA cells.

Document and inventory what you have
- Photograph the case, panel, component labels, battery holders, and loose wires before moving or cleaning anything.
- Compare the kit’s catalog number and panel layout with the 28-248 manual. Use that manual’s diagrams for the specific kit rather than assuming a similarly named set is wired the same way.
- Make an inventory of mounted components and loose parts. The 1977 catalog lists a solar battery, photocell, signal lamp, meter, relay, speaker, integrated circuit, and LED display. Record which are present, missing, corroded, or broken; a listed part is not proof that every surviving specimen still has it.
- Check the battery holders, leads, clips, and case. Note damaged insulation, cracked plastic, corrosion, or clips that no longer hold securely.
The 1977 catalog gives the case dimensions as 2 × 17½ × 11 inches. Those measurements and the component list can help with identification, but the catalog does not establish the condition or exact contents of any particular used kit.

Find the matching manual before reconnecting parts
Look for the dedicated 150-in-1 Electronic Project Kit 28-248 manual in a period manual index or with a reproduction manual listing. Confirm that the manual is for catalog 28-248 and that its panel diagrams match your kit. If the catalog number or layout does not match, do not use the diagrams as a wiring guide until you identify the revision.
Once matched, follow the manual’s diagrams exactly for the first build. Keep a written record of any substituted component and the result of each project; that makes later troubleshooting easier and avoids confusing an original connection with a repair.

Inspect and power the kit cautiously
The 1977 catalog called the kit “No Solder Needed! 100% Safe!” and described solar or battery-powered projects. That is period advertising, not a safety guarantee for an old kit. Before inserting batteries, inspect for leakage, corrosion, cracked holders, brittle or damaged insulation, shorted leads, and signs of overheating. Stop if a part or connection appears unsafe.

Clean conservatively: use methods appropriate for old plastics and electrical contacts, do not scrape printed labels, and do not force spring clips. Install fresh batteries only after the inspection. The documented battery arrangement is one 9 V battery and two AA cells; check the correct manual for their placement and polarity.

Build from simple projects to more involved ones
Begin with a simple lamp, continuity, or audio project shown in the matching manual. If the parts and connections behave as expected, move on to more complex builds. The 1977 catalog’s project list spans communications and test equipment—including a radio, telegraph, one-way telephone, wireless microphone, circuit tester, ohmmeter, DC voltmeter, and audio signal tracer—as well as AND, NAND, OR, and NOR logic circuits with an LED. It also lists sound projects such as a metronome, motorcycle, machine gun, and toy organ.
Do not assume every project can be completed just because it appears in the catalog. Whether a given project works depends on the condition and completeness of the individual kit, the correct manual, and the components required by its diagram.

Choose replacement parts or another kit carefully
If you are evaluating a replacement or incomplete set, compare the details that determine whether it can be assembled and used:
- Catalog or revision number, and whether the manual matches it.
- Whether the manual is included and whether its diagrams are readable.
- Presence and condition of mounted components, battery holders, leads, spring clips, speaker, meter, relay, and display.
- Case and panel condition, including legible labels and intact connectors.
- Clear photographs of every panel and all loose parts, rather than a single closed-case image.
A separate 28-248 manual may be useful when the hardware is mostly complete but the instructions are missing. If the original cannot be completed, a modern solderless learning kit can serve as a substitute, but it should not be treated as a like-for-like replacement: compare its documentation, component set, and project scope with what you want to build.
