Choose a monitor you can center in front of you, place at a comfortable distance, and position with its top edge at or below eye level. Then make sure text is readable without leaning and adjust the screen and room lighting to limit glare. No monitor feature is proven to prevent eye strain for everyone; fit and workspace setup matter more than marketing claims.
Start with fit, not an “eye-care” feature
A monitor is a better fit for your eyes and workstation if you can sit upright, see its text clearly, and keep the screen directly in front of you without fighting reflections. Before shopping, check whether your current display can meet those conditions. If it can, repositioning it or changing text size may help more than buying another monitor.
There is no evidence here that a particular resolution, panel type, refresh rate, curved screen, or product label by itself prevents end-of-day eye discomfort. Compare monitors by whether they can be positioned comfortably at your desk and whether their text is legible at that position.

Check the viewing distance
OSHA’s U.S. workstation guidance gives a general preferred monitor distance of 20–40 inches (50–100 cm), with at least 20 inches in its quick tips. Treat that as a starting range, not a fixed prescription: screen size, text size, desk depth, and personal comfort all matter. OSHA notes that a screen placed too far away can encourage leaning, while one placed too close may increase focusing demands. OSHA monitor guidance

- 99% sRGB Frameless Panel: See vivid, consistent color with a slim modern design for home office, dorm, or dual monitor setups
- 120Hz Smooth Motion: Experience smoother scrolling, video, and casual gaming with a fast refresh rate that helps reduce choppy motion

Individual preferences vary. In a 1998 field study of 22 participants, preferred viewing distances ranged from 60 to 100 cm, and participants’ preferred positions differed. The study also found more visual strain when operators had to work closer than their preferred distance. It supports adjusting the setup to the person, not imposing one ideal distance on everyone. Make sure text is readable without leaning
At the distance your desk allows, text should be easy to read while you keep an upright, supported posture. If it looks too small, increase the text size rather than moving closer or leaning forward. A monitor is a poor fit if its usable position leaves you straining to read or forces an uncomfortable posture.

Check height and adjustability
Position the monitor directly in front of you, with the top line of the screen at or below eye level, as OSHA recommends. If the supplied stand cannot achieve a comfortable height, consider a height-adjustable stand or monitor arm. The accessory is useful only if it solves a positioning problem your desk and existing stand cannot.
Reduce glare and balance the lighting
Reflections and uneven lighting can make a screen harder to view. First try moving the monitor or changing the position of nearby lights or windows. Adjust room lighting and screen contrast so the display is comfortable to see without a bright reflection or an overly dim surrounding workspace.

A 2019 study reported higher questionnaire symptom scores in a reflected-glare environment and poorer visual performance in its glossy-display group. Under the study conditions, uniform supplementary lighting performed better than dim or uneven supplementary lighting. These findings support reducing avoidable glare and lighting imbalance; they do not establish that a specific filter is necessary. Study abstract
An anti-glare filter is a conditional accessory if repositioning the screen and light sources does not resolve a persistent reflection. EyeWiki notes that filters can reduce reflections and glare but may not reduce asthenopia, or eye strain. American Academy of Ophthalmology EyeWiki guidance

Don’t pay extra for blue-light claims as an eye-strain fix
The evidence does not establish blue-light-filtering spectacles as a way to prevent short-term computer-related eye strain. A 2023 Cochrane review included 17 trials with 619 participants across six countries and concluded that these lenses may not reduce short-term eye-strain symptoms compared with non-filtering lenses. Evidence for visual acuity and sleep was limited or inconclusive, and the trials did not establish conclusions for several other outcomes, including macular health. The review concerns spectacles; it does not settle every question about blue light or every monitor setting. Cochrane review

Build in breaks, but keep the evidence in perspective
Break reminders may help some people manage symptoms, but the evidence does not show that they change eye-surface or tear-film measures. In a 2022 study, 29 symptomatic users received webcam-based reminders to follow the 20-20-20 rule for two weeks. Reported digital eye-strain and dry-eye symptoms decreased during the reminder period, but the improvement was not maintained one week after reminders stopped, and measured ocular-surface and tear-film parameters did not change. The study was small and short-term. Study abstract
Use symptoms as a reason to seek individual advice
Eye discomfort cannot be diagnosed from the monitor alone. If symptoms persist or interfere with work, seek advice from an eye-care professional rather than assuming a new screen or filter will solve the problem. The American Optometric Association notes that some people may need glasses specifically for computer viewing distance. AOA digital eye strain guidance
