Photograph architecture models in bright, even light against a simple background, keep the camera steady and level, and choose views that explain the model’s form and important details. Photograph flat drawings straight on. Then assemble the images according to the exact file and format rules of the program receiving your portfolio; there is no universal submission specification.
Set up the model and background
Start with a clean model and a simple, neutral background. Choose a background that contrasts with the model enough to define its outline, without competing with its materials or details. A sheet of plain paper or a clear, uncluttered surface can work if it is large enough to fill the frame.
Before shooting, look through the camera and check for distracting objects, visible dirt, or background edges that intersect the model. The University of Sheffield advises using a neutral background, and Carleton University cautions against distracting backgrounds. Their guidance is for their applicants, but the visual principle applies broadly: make the work easy to see.
Light the model without losing its detail
Use bright, even light and inspect the model for hard shadows, glare, and color shifts. Sheffield recommends bright natural or artificial light without flash and says to check that color and detail remain true to the original. Carleton similarly recommends natural or even light where possible and avoiding glare and shadows. Move the model or adjust the light if a reflective surface becomes a bright patch or a shadow hides an important edge.

Simple natural-light setup
Place the model near bright, indirect daylight rather than in a narrow beam of direct sun. Check the camera preview for contrast and reflections. If one side is too dark, reposition the model or use a plain white surface nearby to reflect some light back; keep the light soft and even rather than introducing another harsh source.
Optional indoor key-and-fill setup
The University of Waterloo Fine Arts guide describes placing a key light above and to one side of the artwork, then using a more distant fill light to soften the key light’s shadows. It also suggests placing tracing paper or vellum between a light and the artwork to soften glare. These are optional techniques, not required purchases. Keep any diffusion material safely away from hot bulbs.

Stabilize and align the camera
For three-dimensional models, keep the camera steady and level where possible. Waterloo’s January 2023 guide recommends a tripod for photographing three-dimensional work and describes leveling the camera. A tripod is optional, but it makes repeatable views easier and reduces blur from camera movement.

For flat drawings, plans, or other two-dimensional work, point the camera at right angles to the surface. Sheffield recommends this to avoid distortion. Keep the camera centered over the work and parallel to it; if the sides of a rectangular sheet converge in the image, realign the camera rather than trying to correct a strongly distorted photograph later.

Choose views that explain the project
Begin with one principal view that communicates the model’s overall form. Add alternate angles or close-ups only when they reveal something useful, such as construction, material, spatial relationships, or a design decision. Carleton advises considering multiple views and details for three-dimensional work.
A portfolio can place a finished-model photograph alongside process photos, sketches, details, and other views when those images help explain the project. Carleton’s Fall 2027 Bachelor of Architectural Studies portfolio package explicitly accommodates this combination. Avoid adding near-duplicate angles that do not tell the reviewer anything new.

Review the photographs before assembling the portfolio
Inspect each image at approximately the size at which it will appear in the submission. Confirm the model is in focus, its edges and proportions look credible, and shadows or background elements do not obscure important features. Check that material color and detail remain believable rather than washed out by glare or altered by lighting.

- Legibility: Are important edges, openings, and details visible at the intended display size?
- Perspective: Is the camera level for the model view, and straight-on for flat work?
- Lighting: Are shadows and reflections controlled without hiding surface or construction details?
- Context: Does every included process image or alternate angle add information?
Follow the destination program’s file rules
Portfolio limits vary by institution, program, and application cycle. These examples show why the receiving program’s current instructions—not another school’s rules—must determine your final export settings.
