Photograph an abandoned building only from a place you are legally allowed to be, or after arranging authorized access that expressly allows photography. A building’s vacant or derelict appearance does not mean entry is permitted—or that the interior is safe. If access or structural condition is uncertain, make the image from outside or choose an officially managed visit.
Can you photograph an abandoned building from the street?
Often, an exterior photograph can be made from a lawful public viewpoint, but do not treat that as a universal right. Local law, privacy and security restrictions, site rules, and the exact place you stand can affect what is allowed. Staying on a public pavement does not authorize crossing a fence, entering a yard, or stepping inside the building.
Check whether the viewpoint is genuinely public and whether signs, barriers, closures, or site-specific rules restrict photography. If you cannot establish that you are permitted to use the vantage point, choose another one or ask the relevant authority or property manager.
How to get permission before photographing inside
Contact the owner or an authorized site manager before visiting. Ask for explicit permission to enter and to photograph; these are separate permissions. Confirm the areas you may access, the visit time and conditions, whether an escort is required, and whether images may be used for your intended purpose. Follow any instructions on arrival, and leave if permission is withdrawn or access is closed.

An official tour or supervised visit is a practical alternative where one is available. A site being vacant, historic, or accessible through an open gate does not by itself mean that visitors have been invited in. Municipal guidance in Vancouver describes owner responsibilities for securing and maintaining vacant buildings, while Historic England discusses urban explorers entering vacant historic buildings and the risks of illegal activity (City of Vancouver: Maintenance of vacant buildings; Historic England: Urban exploration).
Legal rules depend on the place and property
The examples below illustrate why access and photography rules need to be checked locally. They are not a complete legal guide, and they do not establish the rules for a particular building.

UK examples
Hertfordshire Constabulary warns that entering enclosed land or buildings without lawful authority may be an offence; its warning also notes that intent to damage or steal can lead to more serious charges. This is local police guidance, not a complete statement of UK trespass law (Hertfordshire Constabulary, April 28, 2026).
A distinct rule applies to designated prohibited places: section 5 of the National Security Act 2023 addresses unauthorized access, entry, inspection, or passage, and defines inspection to include taking photographs or recordings. This specific provision should not be generalized to ordinary vacant or abandoned properties (National Security Act 2023, section 5).

U.S. federal-property examples
For federal facilities and grounds within its scope, 6 CFR §139.65 permits photography of publicly accessible exterior areas from public areas subject to conditions, including not impeding access or operations and complying with security rules. The regulation also addresses publicly accessible interiors; express permission is required for interior areas occupied by a federal tenant, and commercial photography of tenant-occupied space requires advance written permission. These provisions concern the specified federal property, not abandoned buildings generally (6 CFR §139.65).
Another federal rule, 41 CFR §102-74.420, covers photographs on federal property for news, advertising, or commercial purposes, including permission conditions for some spaces. Check the current rule and the particular site’s requirements rather than interpreting it as a general right to enter federal property (41 CFR §102-74.420).

Why an unknown interior is not a photography set
Police and fire-service guidance identifies hazards that may be hidden or difficult to assess without a professional inspection. They include unstable floors and stairs, weakened roofs or other structural elements, broken glass and sharp debris, exposed wiring, hazardous materials, standing water, vermin, other occupants, and the risk of becoming trapped (Hertfordshire Constabulary; U.S. Fire Administration: Inspecting vacant buildings).
Do not enter a visibly or potentially unsound structure to assess it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns that it is unsafe to enter structurally unsound buildings to inspect for materials such as asbestos, PCBs, lead, or other harmful substances (U.S. EPA: Inspecting buildings for PCBs). A casual visual check cannot establish that floors, stairs, wiring, or materials are safe. Do not test a floor by stepping on it, climb stairs to see whether they hold, or touch or disturb suspect debris.

Protective equipment or a companion cannot establish structural stability or make unauthorized entry lawful. The U.S. Fire Administration’s advice to use protective clothing, a radio, and a flashlight is directed at authorized personnel inspecting vacant buildings; it is not a recreational-entry checklist. Hertfordshire Constabulary’s April 28, 2026 warning quotes Sergeant Deane Brittain, who leads the Welwyn Hatfield North Neighbourhood Policing Team: “We know that urban exploring is a popular activity and these abandoned and derelict sites often appear exciting or mysterious. However, these sites are highly unpredictable, with the potential for serious injury in a matter of seconds.”
Choose a photographic approach that matches the access

None of these options is risk-free. Do not proceed if the structure’s condition is unknown and entry is involved, if it is condemned or posted, if barriers or closures block access, or if hazards are evident. If you cannot get clear authorization, use an exterior viewpoint or choose a site that is officially open.
