The fastest way to improve Google Discover is to combine four feedback controls: follow topics you want, hide topics or publishers you do not want, like useful cards, and review your account’s recommendation settings. In the Google app, these controls are under your profile menu and the More menu on each card. Menu names and availability vary by device, language, country or region, account, and app version, so use the labels displayed on your screen.

What each Google Discover control does

Discover learns from several signals rather than one master “topic list.” Use the control that matches the result you want instead of treating every card as a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down.

Control Use it when you want to What it changes
Follow / Following Receive more updates about a specific topic Requests ongoing Discover coverage of that interest.
Like or Favorite Tell Google that a particular story or subject is useful Can change how often related topics appear in Discover.
Not interested in See fewer stories about a subject Suppresses the selected topic from Discover recommendations.
Don’t show content from Remove a publisher or channel you do not want Suppresses content from that source, regardless of the individual story.
Personalized Recommendations Change account-level recommendation personalization Turning it off stops recommendation personalization based on Search services, although some tailoring from current context and information you save can remain.

Following is the clearest request for more of a subject. A Like is a preference signal attached to a card. Not interested and source hiding are negative filters. These controls work together, so a feed can contain both followed interests and fewer unwanted sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They are not interchangeable. If you dislike one article but still want reporting from that publisher, choose Not interested in rather than hiding the source. If every article from a channel is irrelevant, source hiding is the more precise choice. If you simply want more coverage, begin with Following and Likes instead of waiting for Discover to infer your interests from passive reading.

Where Google Discover appears

Discover is available in the Google app and on google.com on supported mobile devices. Some phones also expose it from the device’s home screen. The feed is not identical everywhere: Chrome’s Discover feed on a New Tab has its own management path, and a setting visible in one surface may not appear in another.

  • Google app: The main Discover feed is usually below the Search box when you open the app.
  • Mobile browser: A Discover feed may appear on google.com when you are signed in on a supported device.
  • Chrome for Android: The New Tab page can show a separate Discover feed with its own Interests and Not Interested controls.

Sign in to the Google Account whose feed you want to change. The Interests area, including followed topics, likes, saved items, and collections, is intended for signed-in users.

If you switch accounts, you may think a preference disappeared when you are actually viewing a different account’s feed. Check the profile picture or initial before changing a setting, especially on a shared phone. A card can also be influenced by the device and current context, so two people using the same model of phone may still see different Discover selections.

Follow topics to request more of what you care about

Android: manage followed topics

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Open Settings, then Personalization, then Manage your interests.
  4. Open the Following section to review topics you already follow.
  5. To stop following one, open the topic and tap Following so it is no longer selected.

You can also reach Manage your interests from a Discover card’s More menu. The exact route can differ as Google updates the app, but the Interests page remains the place to inspect followed subjects and related preference data.

iPhone or iPad: manage followed topics

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Tap Settings, then Manage your interests.
  4. Open Following.
  5. Select a topic and tap Following to unfollow it.

iOS labels and intermediate menus may not match Android exactly. If you do not see a menu, confirm that you are using the Google app rather than a browser tab and that the correct account is active.

Choose topics narrowly enough to be useful

A broad interest can produce a wide mix of stories. Follow a more specific subject when the available topic choices allow it—for example, a particular sport, technology area, or type of news rather than an entire category. Following a topic does not guarantee that every card will be about it; Discover still combines your followed interests with other account and context signals.

Following is a request, not a subscription with a fixed publication schedule. You may see several cards when a topic is active and fewer when there is less current coverage. If a topic is important, reinforce it with Likes on representative cards and remove competing noise with the appropriate More-menu control.

Hide unwanted topics or publishers from a card

Hide a topic

  1. Find a card in Discover that represents a subject you no longer want.
  2. Tap the card’s More menu.
  3. Choose Not interested in.

This is the appropriate choice when the publisher is acceptable but the subject is not. The topic name shown in the menu is the one Google will use for the negative preference.

Hide a publisher or source

  1. Open the More menu on a card from the source you want to remove.
  2. Choose Don’t show content from.

Use source hiding when you do not want that publisher’s cards even if the underlying subjects are relevant. Google notes that topic and source suppression may not be available in every language or region.

Undo a topic or source hide

In the Google app, return to your interests settings and open Not interested. Find the topic or source and choose Remove or Unhide, depending on the label displayed.

In a browser, open google.com settings, go to Discover, then Manage interests, and open Not interested. Select Remove or Unhide next to the item. The wording and location can vary by surface, account, and rollout stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoring an item removes the negative preference; it does not force a card to appear immediately. Use the feed normally afterward and apply a Like or Follow when the subject is one you genuinely want. If a similar story remains, inspect its publisher and topic separately: hiding one source does not hide all publishers covering the same subject, and hiding one topic does not block every related topic.

Like cards to reinforce a useful subject

  1. When a Discover card is genuinely useful, tap its Like or Favorite control.
  2. Continue using the control on cards that represent the subjects, formats, or coverage you want more often.
  3. Review your choices in Discover Likes or the Liked tab on the Interests page.

Google says likes can affect how often related topics appear in Discover. A Like is not the same as following a topic: following explicitly requests updates, while liking a card provides a preference signal based on that item.

Google says liked stories are visible only to the account holder. It also says selections may be shared anonymously with publishers. If you share an account or use a managed device, check which account is active before liking cards.

Use Likes selectively. Liking a card that you opened only to disagree with it, or liking a one-off story outside your normal interests, can send a less useful signal than leaving it untouched. You can review the Liked list later and remove or change items if your preferences have shifted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage the Chrome Android New Tab feed separately

Chrome’s New Tab Discover feed has a different settings path from the main Google app.

  1. Open Chrome on an Android device and open a New Tab.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Choose Customize new tab page.
  4. Open Discover feed, then Interests.
  5. Use Following to review followed subjects or Not interested to manage hidden topics and sources.

For an individual Chrome card, open More to send topic or publisher feedback. Changes made in Chrome may not make every other Discover surface look identical immediately; check the Google app’s Interests page when you need to verify the account-level lists.

This separate path explains why correcting the Google app does not always correct a Chrome New Tab feed at once. Treat each surface as a place to check: confirm the active account, review Following and Not interested, and send feedback on a card where the unwanted result appears.

Review broader recommendation personalization

Understand Search services and Personalized Recommendations

Google’s Android Discover guidance describes using Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations so saved activity can inform recommendations. Google is updating its Search-services privacy controls, and the newer Personalized Recommendations setting is rolling out gradually. Consequently, two accounts or two app versions may show different names or locations.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the updated Personalized Recommendations setting is off, Search services do not personalize recommendations. Google says some tailoring based on your current context and information you save can still remain, so switching off one setting does not promise a completely uniform or non-personalized feed.

What to do when your menus do not match

  • Check that the Google app is updated, then reopen it.
  • Confirm the profile picture or initial shows the account whose Discover feed you are viewing.
  • Look under the current account privacy or Search-services controls rather than relying on an older screenshot.
  • Use the labels actually shown for your language and country or region.

Some controls are unavailable in particular languages or regions. Employer- or school-managed accounts can also have administrator restrictions that prevent access to certain services or settings.

Do not assume that turning off Personalized Recommendations deletes your lists. Following, Liked, and Not interested are separate preference areas; inspect each list if you want to remove a topic, restore a source, or clear an accidental Like. Conversely, changing a Follow list is not a substitute for reviewing account-level recommendation controls when your goal is to reduce activity-based tailoring.

How Google can tailor Discover, and what that means for privacy

Discover selection can use information from your device and other Google products, along with Google Account data controlled by your settings. Examples include Search Services History, app information, Personalized Recommendations, and location settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Location-based updates may use your home location. If a home location is unavailable, Google may estimate location from signals such as your IP address. That can affect the local stories or updates shown in the feed.

Google’s Discover settings describe activity that can be stored and used for Discover, including cards and results shown, cards viewed or customized, topics marked Not interested, devices used, and channels visited. Review the account controls that govern this activity if you want to reduce the information used for recommendations.

These inputs explain why a feed can change even when you have not tapped a new preference control. A different device, a changed location signal, recently saved information, or activity in another Google product can alter which cards are selected. The controls in this guide let you provide direct feedback, while account privacy settings govern broader categories of activity and personalization.

Discover cannot be made ad-free

Google’s settings information says Discover cannot be used without ads. You can still provide feedback on an individual advertisement:

  1. Open the ad card’s More menu.
  2. Choose Why am I seeing this ad?
  3. Use the available option to turn off ads from that advertiser, or open your broader Ads Settings.

Blocking an advertiser does not remove every advertisement from Discover; it changes the treatment of that advertiser’s ads.

A practical tuning routine

Use the following sequence when your feed feels noisy or disconnected from your interests.

  1. Start with positive signals: Follow the subjects you actively want to track and Like a few representative cards.
  2. Remove obvious noise: Hide an unwanted topic when the subject is the problem; hide the source when the publisher is the problem.
  3. Check the lists: Open Following, Liked, and Not interested in Manage your interests to catch accidental selections.
  4. Separate surfaces: If the Google app looks right but Chrome’s New Tab feed does not, open Chrome’s Discover feed settings and adjust them there.
  5. Review account personalization: If you want less activity-based tailoring, inspect Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations, keeping in mind that current context and saved information may still influence results.
  6. Reassess after normal use: Keep using Like, Follow, and More-menu feedback on representative cards instead of changing many unrelated settings at once.

This approach preserves useful local or timely updates while giving Google clearer signals about the subjects and sources you want to see.

A useful maintenance pass is to open Interests after a week or two of ordinary use. Remove topics you followed for a temporary event, unhide a source you dismissed accidentally, and check whether Likes still represent your interests. Because Discover reacts to several inputs, small, deliberate corrections are easier to understand than changing every privacy switch simultaneously.

Troubleshooting common Discover problems

“Manage your interests” is missing

  • Verify that you are in the Google app and signed in.
  • Check the profile menu for a second account and switch to the intended one.
  • Update the app and look again; Google changes menu structures during settings rollouts.
  • Consider language, country or region, and administrator restrictions on a work or school account.

A hidden topic or publisher keeps appearing

  • Check whether the card is from a different source that covers the same subject.
  • Open the card’s More menu again and verify whether you selected a topic hide or a source hide.
  • Review Not interested for accidental removals and confirm you are viewing the same Google Account.
  • Remember that Discover surfaces can have separate controls, particularly Chrome’s New Tab feed.

The feed changed after turning off recommendations

Turning off Personalized Recommendations stops recommendation personalization based on Search services, but Google says current context and information you save can still tailor some results. A changed feed is therefore expected, while a completely untailored feed is not guaranteed.

I cannot find Like or source controls

Control availability depends on the card, language, region, device, and app version. Try another card, open its More menu, and use the options that are actually displayed rather than relying on a control shown in an older guide.

Why do I still see local or timely stories after changing preferences?

Discover can use location settings, current context, and information saved to your account in addition to Follow, Like, and hiding choices. Those inputs can continue to influence the feed, especially when a story is tied to a place or current event. Review the relevant account controls if you want to reduce that broader tailoring.

Can I remove every ad from Discover?

No. Google says Discover cannot be used without ads. You can use Why am I seeing this ad? to turn off ads from a particular advertiser or review Ads Settings, but that does not eliminate all advertising.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For more of the right subjects, use Follow for explicit topic updates and Like on good cards. Use Not interested to suppress a topic and Don’t show content from to suppress a publisher. Manage those lists in Interests, adjust Chrome’s New Tab feed separately, and review account-level personalization if you want to change how much Google uses saved activity. Because controls and labels roll out differently, always verify the active account and follow the menus shown on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does following a topic guarantee that every Discover card will cover it?

No. Following requests ongoing updates about that subject, but Discover combines followed interests with other account, device, location, and current-context signals. Coverage can also vary with what is available at a given time.

Should I hide a topic or hide a publisher?

Choose Not interested in when the subject is the problem but you still want the publisher’s other coverage. Choose Don’t show content from when you want to suppress that publisher regardless of topic.

How do I restore a topic or source I hid by mistake?

Open Manage your interests and then Not interested in the Google app, or use google.com settings > Discover > Manage interests > Not interested in a browser. Choose Remove or Unhide next to the item; wording varies by surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are my Discover Likes public?

Google says liked stories are visible only to the account holder. It also says selections may be shared anonymously with publishers.

Why are my Google app and Chrome New Tab feeds different?

Chrome for Android has a separate New Tab Discover management path. Review Chrome’s Customize new tab page > Discover feed > Interests settings as well as the Google app’s Interests page.

What happens when Personalized Recommendations is turned off?

Search services stop personalizing recommendations under the updated setting, but Google says some tailoring based on current context and information you save can remain. It is not a guarantee of a completely untailored feed.

Can I use Discover without ads?

No. Google says Discover cannot be used without ads. You can provide feedback on an ad and turn off ads from a particular advertiser or review Ads Settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I see a control mentioned in a guide?

Availability depends on language, country or region, account type, device, card, and app version. Update the app, confirm the active account, and use the labels currently shown on your screen.

The Bottom Line

Follow the topics you want, Like representative cards, hide unwanted subjects or publishers, and review Interests regularly. Check Chrome’s New Tab controls separately and remember that broader personalization and ads have their own account settings and limits.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
