Windows 11’s Reset this PC feature can reinstall Windows while removing your accounts, applications, settings, and personal files. It is the simplest way to get a fresh Windows installation without creating a bootable USB drive.

Microsoft distinguishes this recovery reinstall from a full installation-media clean install. Reset this PC does not give you the same partition-management control as booting from Windows installation media, but it is suitable for many PCs that need a clean start.

Before resetting Windows 11

Remove everything deletes personal files, installed applications, and settings from the Windows installation. Make sure you have copied anything you need before continuing.

Complete this checklist

  • Back up documents, photos, browser data, email files, game saves, and anything stored outside your normal cloud-sync folders.
  • Confirm that you can reinstall applications and retrieve their license keys or sign-in details.
  • If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, locate your BitLocker recovery key. Windows may request it, particularly if you start the process through Windows Recovery Environment.
  • Connect the laptop to its charger. Do not rely on battery power during the reset.
  • Check your Windows edition at Start (right-click) > Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, note whether the edition is Home or Pro.

Windows normally reactivates automatically after the reset when the computer goes online. A major hardware change, such as replacing the motherboard, can prevent automatic activation and may require the Activation troubleshooter.

How to clean install Windows 11 with Reset this PC

  1. Open Settings. You can select it from the Start menu or press Windows+I.

  2. Go to System > Recovery.

  3. Under Recovery options, select Reset PC. This is the current Windows 11 button label. Older instructions may tell you to select Get started; that is the older Windows 10 path.

  4. When Windows asks what you want to keep, select Remove everything. Do not select Keep my files if your goal is a fresh installation. Keep my files preserves personal files but still removes applications and settings.

  5. Select an installation source:

Option What it does When to choose it
Cloud download Downloads a fresh copy of Windows from Microsoft. It provides the latest version with its updates. Choose this when local Windows or recovery files may be damaged, missing, or unreliable, or when you want a fresh source.
Local reinstall Uses Windows installation files already stored on the PC. Choose this when internet access is slow or unavailable and you trust the local recovery files. It may not include the latest updates.
  6. Review the reset settings. Depending on the Windows build and device, selecting Change settings may expose additional choices, including Clean data.

  7. Enable Clean data if you are selling, donating, or recycling the PC and want deleted files to be harder to recover. This can make the process substantially longer.

Microsoft describes this as a consumer-oriented feature and says it does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards. For highly sensitive business or regulated data, use an approved media-erasure process instead.

  8. Confirm the summary. Read it carefully: Remove everything means that your personal files, applications, and settings will be removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  9. Select Reset. The computer will restart and begin reinstalling Windows.

What happens during the reset

The screen may remain black for a long time. Microsoft warns that this can occasionally last more than 15 minutes, and the computer may restart itself during the process. Do not manually power off or restart the PC just because the display is blank. Interrupting this stage can cause the reset to fail.

When the installation finishes, Windows starts the initial setup process. Choose your region and keyboard layout, connect to a network when prompted, and sign in with a Microsoft account or use the available account options. You will need to reinstall desktop applications, restore files from backup, and check Windows Update for any remaining updates.

Use Reset this PC when Windows will not start

If Windows 11 still reaches the sign-in screen or desktop, use either of these supported routes to enter Windows Recovery Environment:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery, select Restart now beside Advanced startup, and confirm the restart.
  2. Alternatively, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart from the Start menu or sign-in screen.

After the blue recovery screen appears, select:

Troubleshoot > Reset this PC

Then choose Remove everything, select Cloud download or Local reinstall, review the options, and confirm the reset.

System Restore is a separate Windows Recovery Environment tool. It is not a required submenu of Reset this PC. If you want to undo a recent driver or software change without deleting personal files, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore instead.

If the computer cannot boot into Windows RE, Microsoft supports starting from Windows installation media, selecting Repair my PC, and then opening the recovery tools.

Reset this PC versus a USB clean install

Reset this PC is often described as a clean install because it reinstalls Windows and, with Remove everything, deletes the current user environment. Technically, it is a recovery reinstall rather than the most thorough form of clean installation.

Feature Reset this PC Installation-media clean install
Requires a USB installer No Yes
Removes personal files, applications, and settings Yes, with Remove everything Yes
Uses the Windows recovery environment Yes No; the PC boots from installation media
Partition management Limited and handled by the reset process Manual; you select and delete target partitions
Useful for suspected malware Not always the best choice Microsoft specifically recommends installation media when malware infection is suspected

A USB clean install is also the better choice when Windows will not reset, the recovery environment is damaged, you need to remove existing partitions manually, or you want the most controlled reinstall. On a PC with multiple physical drives, Microsoft warns that during a media-based installation you must not delete partitions on disks other than the intended Windows disk, commonly listed as Disk 0.

Common problems and the right response

The reset fails with Local reinstall

The local recovery files may be corrupted or missing. Restart the process and choose Cloud download instead. It requires a reliable internet connection and enough time to download Windows.

The screen is black

Wait. A black screen lasting more than 15 minutes can occur during the reset. Avoid holding the power button unless the computer has clearly been unresponsive for an unusually long period and you have exhausted the manufacturer’s support guidance.

Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key

Retrieve the recovery key from the Microsoft account associated with the PC or from the copy saved by your organization. Without it, encrypted data may not be accessible through recovery tools.

Windows does not activate afterward

Connect to the internet and give Windows time to reactivate. If the hardware was significantly changed, open Settings > System > Activation and run the Activation troubleshooter. The reinstalled edition must match the device’s license, such as Windows 11 Home rather than Pro.

Bottom line

For a straightforward fresh start, open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC, choose Remove everything, and use Cloud download if you suspect the local recovery files are damaged. Enable Clean data when preparing the PC for another owner, but do not treat it as a certified secure-erasure method.

If you need manual partition control, are dealing with suspected malware, or Reset this PC will not work, create Windows 11 installation media and perform a traditional USB clean install instead.

FAQ

Does Reset this PC completely wipe the drive?

No. Remove everything removes the Windows user environment, including personal files, applications, and settings. The optional Clean data feature makes recovery harder, but Microsoft says it does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards and is not the same as a certified drive wipe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose Cloud download or Local reinstall?

Choose Cloud download when local recovery files may be corrupted or missing, or when you want a fresh Windows source. Choose Local reinstall when your internet connection is slow and the existing local files are trustworthy.

What is the difference between Keep my files and Remove everything?

Keep my files preserves personal files but removes installed applications and settings. Remove everything removes personal files, applications, and settings and is the appropriate choice for a fresh reset.

Will Windows 11 activate after using Reset this PC?

Usually, yes. Windows normally reactivates automatically after connecting to the internet, provided the reinstalled edition matches the license. A major hardware change may require the Activation troubleshooter.

Is Reset this PC the same as a clean USB installation?

No. Reset this PC is a recovery reinstall. A USB installation-media clean install boots from external media and provides manual control over the target disk’s partitions, making it the more thorough option for some problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use: Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC > Remove everything. Select Cloud download if the local recovery files are suspect; otherwise Local reinstall may be quicker. Back up first, keep the PC powered, and do not interrupt a black-screen stage.
