To pay a person for a purchase on Venmo, use Pay/Request, choose the seller, enter the agreed amount and an accurate note, tap Pay, then enable the purchase toggle on the next screen if Venmo offers it. Turn it on before sending: the option is not available for every payment, and an ordinary personal transfer should not be treated as a protected purchase.

How to mark a personal-profile payment as a purchase

  1. Open Venmo and tap Pay/Request.
  2. Select the seller’s personal profile. Check the recipient carefully to make sure it is the intended person.
  3. Enter the agreed amount and write a note that accurately describes the item or service.
  4. Tap Pay.
  5. On the next screen, look below the payment method for the purchase toggle. Turn it on if the payment is genuinely for a purchase and Venmo presents the option.
  6. Review the recipient, amount, note, and transaction details, then submit the payment.

Venmo’s interface may vary by account, platform, and feature availability. Follow the options shown in your current app; the purchase toggle is not guaranteed to appear. Venmo’s instructions for buying from personal profiles describe the purchase flow and eligibility condition.

Save the listing, agreement, and relevant messages. They may help explain the transaction if you need to dispute an eligible purchase.

When to use a business profile or merchant checkout

If the seller has an authorized Venmo business profile, pay that profile rather than sending an ordinary personal transfer. You may also be able to use a merchant’s supported Venmo checkout, Venmo Debit Card at a merchant that accepts it, or an in-store Venmo QR code at select merchants. Availability depends on the merchant and payment method; use the route the merchant supports and review the transaction details before confirming. See Venmo’s buying and selling guidance.

What Venmo Purchase Protection does—and does not—promise

Venmo says eligible purchases may be covered in situations such as an item not arriving, arriving damaged, or differing materially from its description. Protection depends on the payment meeting Venmo’s eligibility requirements and using the designated purchase flow. Venmo investigates eligible disputes; coverage is not an automatic refund or a guarantee that a claim will succeed. Review the current purchase instructions and terms before relying on it.

Open a dispute for an eligible personal-profile purchase

If a seller does not fulfill an agreement for a personal-profile payment you tagged as a purchase, Venmo’s instructions direct you to open the transaction in the app and choose Me > transaction > Need Help?, then follow the prompts and provide relevant details. The dispute is reviewed; submitting one does not guarantee reimbursement.

Fees depend on the payment type

For a personal-profile payment intentionally tagged as a purchase, Venmo says the recipient pays a fee deducted from the amount received. Venmo’s general buying-and-selling FAQ illustrates this with a $100 payment where the seller receives $98; that is an example on the FAQ, not a universal fee quote for every transaction. Business-profile fees are separate: Venmo lists 1.9% + $0.10 for direct payments to a business profile and 2.29% + $0.10 for Tap to Pay. Do not apply those business rates to a personal-profile purchase. Check the current transaction details and Venmo’s seller fee information for the route you plan to use.

Safety checks before you send money

  • Do not skip the purchase setting just because a seller asks. Venmo warns about sellers who ask buyers not to mark a personal-profile payment as a purchase. Its scam guidance advises buying from strangers only through an approved business account or by marking a personal-profile payment as a purchase when that option is available.
  • Verify payment in your Venmo app. Do not rely on a screenshot or an email sent by the other party as proof that money was paid.
  • Check recipient and details before confirming. Venmo says completed payments generally cannot be canceled. If something goes wrong, use the dispute process when applicable or contact Venmo Support; cancellation is not a dependable way to recover a completed payment.
