If an international card is declined when you try to buy a game in Latin America, the right alternative depends on your country and the platform’s account/store region. First check the platform’s payment options for your country. If direct card payment is unavailable, an official platform wallet or gift-card code may work—but only when it is authorized and matches your account’s region.
Start with your country and store region
There is no single payment method that works across Latin America’s countries and game stores. Identify your country, the platform you are buying from, and the country or region assigned to your account. Then check the platform’s official payment page or the checkout itself for methods accepted in that location.

Local payment services do not automatically work at every game storefront. For example, Mercado Pago’s developer documentation lists country-dependent methods such as PIX, boleto, and OXXO, but that does not establish that Mercado Pago is accepted by a particular game store. Check the relevant country’s options in Mercado Pago’s available payment methods documentation.

Nintendo: local eShop gift-card payments in Brazil and Mexico
Nintendo documents a credit-card-free route for players in Brazil and Mexico: buy a digital Nintendo eShop gift card through its local checkout and use the code to add funds. The available payment methods differ by country. Nintendo says Brazil checkout supports PIX or boleto bancário, while Mexico supports OXXO. Brazil: PIX or boleto bancário
For PIX, Nintendo’s instructions say to scan the checkout QR code using a bank app or e-wallet, verify the recipient and amount, and confirm payment. For boleto bancário, follow the checkout’s payment instructions and allow time for processing before expecting the code email.
Mexico: OXXO
Generate the OXXO voucher at checkout and pay at an authorized location within five days. Nintendo emails the code after the payment has processed. Nintendo says these gift-card sales are final, so verify the amount and account region before completing the purchase.

Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru
Nintendo’s separate eShop guidance for Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru says the eShop uses each country’s local currency and accepts Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards, as well as Nintendo eShop cards. PayPal is not accepted in those eShops. Automatic renewals, memberships, and preorders require a stored card or sufficient eShop balance. Steam: match the payment method to the store country
Steam advises using a payment method that matches the current store country. This matters especially when traveling: a card or payment method associated with another country may not fit the store region currently on the account. Steam also says transactions initiated through anonymous proxies are declined, so disable or remove VPN or proxy software when troubleshooting a failed purchase. Do not use a VPN to disguise your purchase location.

If you cannot use the checkout methods available to you, Steam says you may consider a Steam Wallet code. Before buying one, check that it is from an authorized seller and is compatible with your account’s region. Steam’s Purchasing Issues support page also notes that a failed transaction can leave a temporary card hold; release may take up to 30 days depending on the bank and issuer. Ask your card issuer about its policy before repeatedly retrying the payment.
PlayStation Store: check the card’s country and ask your bank
PlayStation says a card registered to an address in a different country from the PlayStation Store region may not link. If you cannot use a card registered in the same country as the Store, PlayStation suggests another available payment method or a PlayStation Store Wallet Top-Up code. Confirm that any code is intended for your Store region before buying it.

If the card should be compatible, check that online payments are enabled, that funds are available, and that your bank or card provider has not blocked the transaction. PlayStation’s card-information troubleshooting page provides its guidance for adding credit or debit card details.

Choose a fallback without creating a new problem
- Confirm the account region. Check the country assigned to the platform account and the Store you are using; do not assume that your physical location determines either one.
- Check official country-specific checkout options. Use the platform’s support page or checkout to confirm what it accepts where your account is registered.
- If direct payment fails, look for platform-branded credit. Consider an official wallet or gift-card code only if the platform supports it and the code matches your account’s region.
- Check the seller before paying. Prefer an authorized retailer with clear region information and a clear refund policy. Avoid third-party listings whose authorization or code region is unclear.
- Keep account and payment details accurate. Do not use a VPN to misrepresent your location. Follow the platform’s rules if you have moved countries.
- Separate game purchases from recurring charges. A wallet balance or gift card may not cover automatic renewals. Confirm the platform’s renewal requirements before relying on stored funds.
- Pause after a failed charge. Check your bank for a pending hold and ask the issuer about it before sending repeated payment attempts.
Why a payment method that works locally may still fail
A payment rail’s availability in a country is not proof that a particular storefront accepts it. Likewise, a valid card can fail if its registered country does not match the Store region, while a wallet code may fail if it was issued for a different region. Platform guidance describes supported routes, not a guarantee that every card, code, local wallet, or payment method will work for every account, purchase, or subscription.
