To move a photo quickly between your own nearby iPhone, iPad, and Mac, copy it on one device and paste it on the other with Universal Clipboard. Make sure both devices use the same Apple Account and have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled. For sending photo files to another person or sharing several photos, use AirDrop instead.
Use Universal Clipboard for a quick photo handoff
Universal Clipboard lets you copy an image on one nearby Apple device and paste it into an app on another. It is a copy-and-paste convenience, not automatic syncing of your Photos library. Apple says clipboard content is available briefly or until you copy something else.

- Copy the photo. On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the image, then tap Copy. On Mac, select the image and press Command-C, or choose Edit > Copy.
- Open the destination. On the other device, go to the note, email, document, or other location where you want the image.
- Paste it. Tap or click in the destination and choose Paste. On Mac, you can press Command-V.
Universal Clipboard is not a separate app or a visible setting of its own. Apple describes it this way: “Universal Clipboard isn’t a feature that you see.” Its copy-and-paste action is the gesture.
Make sure both devices meet the requirements
Apple’s instructions require the devices to be near each other, signed in to the same Apple Account, and connected with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. Handoff must also be enabled, and both devices must meet Apple’s compatibility requirements. Apple says Handoff is on by default.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For an iPhone, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance says the devices should be within 30 feet (10 meters). This is a support instruction, not a guarantee of performance at every distance. If a VPN is in use, check that its configuration does not block local networking.
Choose the right method for the job
| What you want to do | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paste one image into a note, email, or document on your own device | Universal Clipboard | It lets you paste copied content normally on a nearby device. |
| Send one or more photo files to someone nearby | AirDrop | Photos offers AirDrop in its share sheet for nearby Apple devices. |
| Let a group view and contribute to an album over time | Shared Album | Apple’s Photos guide identifies Shared Albums for group viewing and contributions. |
Send photo files with AirDrop
Use AirDrop when the goal is to send actual photo files rather than paste a copied image into an app. In Photos, select the photos, tap the share button, and choose AirDrop and the nearby recipient. Apple’s documented bring-devices-together method for iPhone-to-iPhone sharing requires both phones to be on and unlocked with AirDrop enabled; select the photos, bring the devices together, then tap Share. Items sent by that documented method are added to the recipient’s Photos library.

Apple says photo sharing through the iPhone Photos workflow can include associated metadata, including date and time, location, device, and captions. If location privacy matters, inspect the sharing options before sending; how every app or transfer route handles every metadata field is not established by that guidance.

If copying and pasting does not work
- Confirm both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices.
- Verify that Handoff is enabled and that the devices meet Apple’s system requirements.
- Bring the devices closer together; Apple’s iPhone guide specifies within 30 feet (10 meters) for troubleshooting.
- If a VPN is active, check whether it blocks local networking.
- Restart the devices, then copy and paste again.
For Apple’s instructions, see Copy and paste between your iPhone and other Apple devices and Use Universal Clipboard to copy and paste between your Apple devices. Apple also explains sharing photos and videos on iPhone, and Continuity on iPad and Mac.
