To control a soundbar with a DIRECTV remote, first identify whether you have a Genie satellite receiver or a Gemini streaming device: their setup menus differ. Genie remotes use the receiver’s audio-device programming and may need Volume Lock set to the soundbar; Gemini remotes use the Speaker System option in system settings. These steps program remote commands only—they do not connect the soundbar’s audio cable or wireless link.
Identify your DIRECTV remote and device
Do not assume all DIRECTV remotes use the same pairing process. The instructions below cover Genie satellite and Gemini streaming setups. DIRECTV’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes Genie, Universal, and Gemini remotes, and its Genie receiver manual identifies the Genie remote series as RC71 and above. Check the label on your remote and whether you use a Genie receiver or a Gemini device before proceeding.
Program a Genie remote for a soundbar
- Enable RF on the Genie remote. The Genie setup guidance calls for RF to be enabled before programming.
- Open the audio-device setup on the receiver. On the receiver, go to Menu > Settings > Remote Control > Pair/Program Remote > Program Audio Device. Some receiver software may instead show Settings > Remote Control > Program Remote; follow the current on-screen labels if they differ.
- Select the soundbar brand and model. Enter or select the audio-device details shown on screen. If code transmission fails, retry as prompted and try the available codes for that device.
- Test the volume. When prompted, press VOL+. A brand selection alone does not confirm that the setup works.
- Route volume to the soundbar if needed. If the setup reports that it worked, select Change Volume Lock > Use Audio Device > OK. This makes the volume buttons control the audio device rather than the TV. DIRECTV Community Support describes this as the step that ensures the volume key operates the audio device; menu availability and behavior can vary by receiver and remote.
Program a Gemini remote for a soundbar
- Press HOME on the Gemini remote.
- Open Settings > System > Remote & Devices > Program Your Remote.
- Choose Speaker System, select the soundbar brand, and follow the prompts to set volume control.
These Gemini steps come from DIRECTV Community Team support guidance. Device updates can change menu wording, so use the labels shown on your screen if they differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to check if the remote will not control the soundbar
Confirm that you followed the workflow for your device
Genie satellite receivers and Gemini streaming devices use different menus. Recheck the remote label and device type, then follow only the matching sequence above.

Retry codes and test the buttons
If code transmission fails, retry when prompted. If more than one code is offered for the brand, test the available options with the volume buttons instead of assuming the first match is correct.
Check Volume Lock on Genie
A Genie remote can be programmed for an audio device without its volume buttons being routed to that device. If programming appears successful but volume still controls the TV, set Volume Lock to Use Audio Device.

Check how commands reach the soundbar
RF setup concerns communication between the Genie remote and receiver; it does not prove that the soundbar receives volume commands. Many external audio-device commands use infrared (IR). If the buttons do not reach the bar, check whether the soundbar accepts IR and whether the remote has a clear path to its sensor.

Separate remote programming from audio connection
Programming the remote does not establish an audio connection. Confirm that the soundbar is already connected to the TV or receiver through its intended input, such as HDMI ARC/eARC or optical, or through another connection supported by your equipment.

If the soundbar is not listed
The available support guidance does not establish a universal soundbar code or compatibility with every model. If the soundbar is absent from the menu or none of the offered codes works, consult model-specific support from DIRECTV or the soundbar manufacturer.

You generally do not need to buy anything to try these setup steps. Consider a replacement only if the current remote is broken, missing, or incompatible. DIRECTV’s manual identifies Genie remotes in the RC71-and-above series, but that does not establish compatibility with every receiver or confirm current product availability. Check the exact receiver and remote compatibility before purchasing.
