You can overclock a monitor only if its model supports a higher refresh rate through a documented on-screen display (OSD) option or a mode your system can select. Start with the monitor’s current manual, enable any built-in Overclock setting as instructed, and then choose an available refresh rate in your graphics settings. A custom mode beyond the monitor’s designed operating range is a different, riskier approach—and may damage the display.
What monitor overclocking means
“Overclocking” can refer to two different things. Some monitors include a manufacturer-provided OSD option that permits operation above the panel’s standard specification. For example, Dell documents an Overclock setting for the G2723H. Alternatively, a user may create a custom resolution or refresh rate beyond the monitor’s designed operating range. BenQ ZOWIE warns that this second approach may damage a monitor and may affect warranty coverage. These are not interchangeable procedures: follow the instructions and limits for your exact model. See Dell’s G2723H instructions and BenQ ZOWIE’s warning about custom resolutions.
How to try a supported overclock
-
Find your monitor’s exact model and instructions
Check the model label or your system’s display information, then find the current manual or support page for that exact model. Confirm whether it has a built-in Overclock option, which resolutions and refresh rates it supports, and whether a particular input is required. Do not assume another model’s menu, connection requirement, or maximum rate applies to yours. ASUS and Dell publish model-specific instructions; see ASUS monitor overclocking guidance and Dell’s G2723H instructions.

Enable the monitor’s OSD option, if provided
Open the monitor’s physical-button or joystick menu and enable Overclock only as the manual directs. Some models may reboot after the setting is enabled; a reviewed manual then directs users to select the maximum refresh rate in the graphics control panel. That same manual restricts its feature to DisplayPort, but this is a model-specific requirement, not a general rule for all monitors. Check your own manual before changing cables or inputs.

Select an available refresh rate on your computer
Open the display settings for your operating system or graphics card and select the monitor, resolution, and refresh rate you want to use. In NVIDIA Control Panel, the Change resolution page lists rates available for the selected display. NVIDIA’s documentation also says that when G-SYNC is enabled, the refresh-rate control is set to the highest rate available for that display. Interface details can change, so consult NVIDIA’s Change resolution help and NVIDIA’s G-SYNC instructions if the controls differ from what you see.
-
Check the picture and use the display normally
Confirm that the selected resolution and refresh rate appear correctly and remain stable during ordinary use. If you see flickering, image corruption, or other abnormal behavior, switch back to a lower rate or disable Overclock. No universal refresh-rate increase or safe ceiling applies across monitor models.

What to do if the screen goes blank or looks wrong
Do not keep a mode that leaves the display unusable or produces an abnormal image. Follow the recovery procedure in your monitor’s manual. ASUS recommends disconnecting the signal cable and using the OSD to try a lower maximum refresh rate if no image appears. A reviewed manual also advises disabling Overclock when the image is abnormal. The exact controls and recovery steps vary by model; see ASUS’s support guidance and your monitor’s manual.
Custom refresh rates and warranty risk
BenQ ZOWIE warns that a custom resolution or refresh-rate setting outside the monitor’s designed operating range may damage the display and may make it ineligible for warranty coverage. That warning should not be read as proof that every manufacturer-supported OSD overclock voids every monitor warranty. Coverage depends on the manufacturer, model, and region, so check the terms that apply to your display before trying an unsupported custom mode.

Some monitor documentation also disclaims guaranteed performance or responsibility for side effects from enabling an Overclock feature. Because the cited manual excerpt does not identify its model, that language cannot be applied to a particular monitor without checking its manual and product information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no universal overclock number
The supported modes, connection requirements, OSD procedure, and recovery options are model-specific. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a typical refresh-rate uplift or a universal safe maximum. Use the highest rate that your monitor’s documentation supports and your computer actually offers for the selected display and resolution; do not treat a custom mode outside the designed range as a guaranteed extension of the monitor’s capabilities.
