Use Collections to group Kindle books, and use filters, sorting, and search to locate a title in your full library. If a book seems to be missing, first check whether a filter is hiding it—and remember that seeing a collection on one Kindle does not mean its books are downloaded on another device.

Choose Collections or filters, depending on the task

Tool Best for What it does
Collections Grouping books you want to browse together Displays titles in user-created groups. On a Kindle e-reader, choose Collections from the Library’s Sort By menu. Amazon’s collection download instructions describe browsing and downloading collections.
Filters, sorting, and search Finding a particular title in a large library Narrows or rearranges the library view. Amazon’s app troubleshooting path uses Library > All, clears active filters, and searches by title. See Amazon’s missing-content steps.

These tools solve different problems: a collection is a way to group books; filters and search help you find an item in the library. Also distinguish a book visible in the account’s library from one downloaded for offline reading on a particular device.

Browse and download a collection on a Kindle e-reader

  1. From the Home screen, open Library.
  2. Open Sort By in the upper-right corner and choose Collections.
  3. Open the collection you want. To download all of its items to that e-reader, open the collection’s menu and select Download all items.

A collection created on a registered Kindle or Amazon’s website does not automatically download to other devices. On the Kindle you plan to use, check the collection and download its books there as needed. Amazon explains collection downloads here.

These steps cover browsing and downloading on an e-reader; creation and editing controls can differ by app, model, and software version. If you do not see the same controls, find your model’s instructions on Amazon’s Kindle user guides page.

Find a book with Library filters, sorting, and search

For the Kindle app, Amazon’s troubleshooting instructions give this sequence. Menu labels can vary between app versions and Kindle models, so treat these as the documented app steps rather than a guaranteed path on every screen.

  1. Open Library and select All, rather than viewing only downloaded items.
  2. Open Filter and clear any active filters.
  3. Search for the book by title.
  4. If it is a recent addition, open the Sort icon and choose Recent to bring newer items toward the top. Allow the library to refresh.

Amazon notes that active filters can make content appear hidden. Its full Kindle library troubleshooting guide covers additional checks.

Troubleshoot a Kindle book that still is not showing up

Work through these checks before assuming a title was deleted. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance is U.S.-localized; labels and settings may vary by device and region.

  1. Check the connection. Connect the Kindle or phone to the internet and make sure Airplane mode is off.
  2. Sync the library. On an e-reader, use Settings > Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items. In the Kindle mobile app, open More > Sync now; Amazon says the displayed last-synced date and time updates when the sync completes. See Amazon’s mobile-app sync instructions.
  3. Check whether the book is in your account. Open Manage Your Content and Devices > Content > Books. If the title is listed but not on the device, use Deliver or remove it from the device as appropriate, then check the destination Kindle again.
  4. Check the digital order. If the title is absent from the content list, look in Your Orders > Digital Orders to confirm the order completed.
  5. Refresh the library view. Return to Library, select All, clear filters, and search for the title again.
  6. If the problem persists, restart the device and check for a recent software update.

What Kindle sync does—and what it does not do

Amazon says sync saves reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers for Kindle apps and devices linked to the same account. It is enabled by default and requires an internet connection. Settings paths differ by platform: phone app, More > Settings > Sync; tablet app, More in the sidebar > Settings > Sync; e-reader, More > Settings > Device Options > Sync. Details are in Amazon’s sync help page.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Black
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Syncing account data is not the same as downloading books for local reading. A collection may be visible on a second device while its books still need to be downloaded there. Amazon also warns that turning sync off stops automatic saving and cross-device sharing of reading position; notes, highlights, or bookmarks made while it is off may be lost when sync is turned back on.

Kindle Scribe Workspace is a separate option

For Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later, Amazon documents Workspace as a way to organize books and documents alongside notebooks in a folder structure. To add an item, long-press it in Library and choose Add to Workspace, or use the plus tile from Workspace. You can also create folders there. The device must be registered to an Amazon account and connected to the internet. See Amazon’s Workspace instructions. Workspace is specific to the stated Scribe models; it is not a replacement for Collections on other Kindles.
