Use albums to build deliberate collections, Favorites to mark standout images, and Archive to remove items from the everyday Photos view without deleting them. These actions overlap in appearance but solve different problems: albums organize, the star identifies, and Archive controls visibility. None of the three deletes a backed-up photo or reduces storage on its own.
Albums, Favorites, and Archive: which tool does what?
The quickest way to avoid a disorganized library is to decide what you want the action to accomplish before touching a photo. Ask whether you are creating a collection, marking a particularly useful image, or simply removing visual clutter from the timeline.
| Tool | Best for | Main Photos view | Album and search availability | Storage effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Album | A deliberate grouping by trip, event, person, project, or purpose | Photos remain visible unless separately archived | The album is a grouping; removing an item or deleting the album leaves the library item intact | No deletion or storage reduction by itself |
| Favorite | Star-marking selected standouts for quick retrieval | Not documented as hiding the photo | Google Photos keeps the star marker; the exact Favorites collection location can vary by app version | No deletion or storage reduction |
| Archive | Hiding an item from the everyday Photos timeline while retaining it | Hidden | Photos remain in albums and search results, and in device folders | Still counts toward your account quota |
A single image can use more than one tool. For example, a favorite portrait can be inside a “Family reunion 2026” album and archived if you do not want it in the main timeline. The actions do not create extra copies. Conversely, an image can be in an album without being a Favorite, or archived without belonging to an album.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Think of the three controls as separate labels on the same library item. An album answers “what set does this belong to?” A Favorite answers “which individual image is a standout?” Archive answers “should this appear in my day-to-day feed?” That mental model prevents accidental deletion and makes later searches more predictable.

Build useful albums instead of one giant catch-all
Choose names you will remember
Name an album for the way you will search for it later. Practical patterns include an event and year (Lisbon trip 2026), a recurring person or project (Riley’s school), or a functional purpose (Receipts). You can also combine a place with an occasion, such as Grandma’s 80th birthday—Chicago, when that detail will distinguish it from similar events.
Keep the system modest and searchable. Google documents how albums work, but does not prescribe an ideal number of albums or a mandatory naming taxonomy. A short, consistent title is generally easier to recognize than a long sentence. Avoid making a separate album for every handful of images unless you have a clear reason to revisit it.
Create an album on the web
- Open Google Photos in a browser and select the photos or videos.
- Choose Add, then New album.
- Enter a title and finish creating the album.
The exact toolbar placement can change with the web layout, but the operation is still a selection followed by Add and New album. If you start from an open photo rather than a grid selection, use the equivalent Add-to-album command shown by that version of the site.

- Select one or more photos or videos.
- Tap Add to album.
- Choose New album, enter a title, and save.
On Android and iOS, existing albums are generally reached through Collections > Albums. The available sort controls include title, last modified, and most recent photo; labels and placement can differ between platforms and app versions. Sorting changes how you browse albums, not which photos belong to them.
Maintain an album without affecting the library
After creating an album, you can set a cover, rename it, reorder or sort its contents, and remove individual items. Removing a photo or video from an album does not delete it from the main library. Deleting the album also leaves all of its contents in the main Photos area. Deletion happens only if you separately delete the library items from the Photos section and complete any trash or retention steps Google presents.
This makes albums safe for curation. You can create a temporary “Best shots to share” album, remove weaker images after reviewing them, or rename a project album as plans change without worrying that the underlying files will vanish. If a photo seems missing after an album edit, search for it or check the main Photos view before taking any further action.
Know the album limits and automatic options
- Google allows up to 20,000 photos or videos in one album. Some features may not be available for very large albums.
- A regular album is manual. A Live album can automatically add images matching selected face groups. Face Groups is imperfect, so an image can occasionally be included without the selected person. Live album availability also varies by country.
- Do not treat a Live album as proof that every matching photo was identified correctly; review its contents periodically.
For a long-running project, consider several clearly named albums rather than approaching the 20,000-item ceiling. For example, split a school archive by academic year or a business shoot by client and date. This is easier to browse and avoids relying on features that Google says may be unavailable in very large albums.
Use an album as the source for a keepsake
Once a trip, reunion, or milestone album is reviewed, Google Photos can use an album as the starting point for a photo book where that service is available. Google’s documented Android ordering flow asks you to select at least 20 photos. Availability, pricing, shipping, and supported countries can change, so verify those details in your account before ordering. A photo book is an optional output of a well-organized album, not a requirement for using albums.

Mark standout photos as Favorites
What the star means
Favorites are a star marker, not a separate copy, folder, or backup. They are useful for a small set of images you want to retrieve quickly—such as a best portrait, a presentation image, a receipt you need this week, or a few photos to share later. Favoriting does not hide the image from the Photos view and does not reduce storage.
Because a Favorite is an item-level marker, it can work across several albums. You might star the clearest portrait in a family album, the final design in a project album, and the best evidence photo in a receipts album. Do not assume that starring every item in an album creates a second album; it simply marks each selected item.
Favorite one photo on a phone or tablet
- Open the photo in Google Photos.
- On the photo’s detail screen, look for the star control and tap it.
- Tap the star again to remove the Favorite marker.
Product guidance for this control comes from Google Photos Community answers, and the icon or menu position can differ by app version. If you do not see a star immediately, open the photo’s details or overflow menu rather than assuming the feature is unavailable. The control may be more visible after tapping once on the image to reveal the full toolbar.

Favorite several photos on the web
- Select one or more photos in the main Photos view.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Choose the Favorite command.
When working inside an album, the bulk command may not be offered. Open the individual image and use its star instead. Interface wording can change, so use the command that explicitly adds or removes the star. Before applying a bulk Favorite action, check that the selection contains only the images you intend to mark.
Sync Favorites with Apple Photos on iOS
Google Photos can synchronize its star markers with Apple Photos on iOS. In Google Photos, open Settings > Apps & devices > Apple Photos > Sync favorites, then follow the on-screen setup.
- Turning synchronization off does not remove existing Favorite markers.
- With synchronization enabled, unfavoriting on either side propagates to the other service.
This is a marker sync, not a second upload or a promise that every other Google Photos organization feature will appear in Apple Photos. If a star changes unexpectedly, check whether synchronization is enabled on the devices using the same library.
Finding the Favorites collection
Google confirms the star feature, but the current official help does not establish one platform-independent route to a Favorites collection. Depending on your app or web version, look under the library or Collections area, use search or filters, or open a known starred image and inspect its details. Avoid relying on a screenshot made for a different release.
Recommended Free Tools
If you need a durable, descriptive grouping rather than a quick star, put the images in a named album as well. Favorites are intentionally lightweight; an album can carry context such as “Website hero images” or “Photos for the 2026 calendar.”

Archive photos that should stay available but leave the main feed
Archive on Android
- Open a photo, or select several photos.
- Tap More.
- Choose Archive.
Archive on the web
- Select the photo or photos.
- Choose More > Archive.
On iPhone and iPad, select the item and use the equivalent Archive command in the More or overflow menu; the exact label and location can change with the app release. If the command is not visible, open the full selection toolbar or the photo’s details.
What Archive changes—and what it does not
Google describes Archive as a way to hide photos from the Photos view and move them to archive. Archived items remain in albums, search results, and device folders. They are excluded from highlight videos and animations, but they are not deleted and continue to count toward your storage quota.
That behavior makes Archive useful for screenshots, instruction images, scanned references, memes, work-in-progress material, or documents that you want to retain but do not want mixed into a chronological feed. It is a visibility choice, not a privacy guarantee: anyone with access to the library and the right search or album can still find an archived image.
Find or restore an archived item
On mobile, look for Archive under Collections. On the web, open Archive from the navigation. Select an item and choose Unarchive to return it to the main Photos view. Unarchiving does not remove the item from albums or alter its Favorite marker.
If you cannot see an archived image in Archive, search for a distinctive date, person, or object and check the result. Its continued appearance in search and albums is expected. Conversely, an image can be archived and still appear in a device folder because Archive changes Google Photos’ main view, not the original file’s location on your device.
When Archive is the wrong choice
Archive is appropriate for screenshots, reference images, scans, or other material you want to retain but do not want mixed into the everyday timeline. It is not a storage-cleanup operation. If your goal is to reclaim quota, use Google Photos’ separate storage-management and deletion controls, and confirm that the item is backed up before deleting it.
Do not archive an image merely because you want it out of one album. Remove it from that album instead; the library item can remain visible elsewhere. Likewise, do not delete an item when you only want to hide it from highlight videos or the main feed. Archive is reversible, while deletion can trigger trash-retention and backup consequences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical workflow for a growing library
- Group first. When a set belongs together, create or use an album named for the event, person, project, or purpose.
- Star the few you will return to. Add Favorites to standout images rather than starring every photo in the album.
- Archive the visual noise. Hide screenshots, reference material, and other non-timeline items that you still need.
- Review the result. Open the album to check membership, inspect starred items through your current interface, and search for an archived item to confirm it remains available.
For a monthly or quarterly cleanup, start with the newest part of the library. Create albums for completed events, star only the images you would actually show someone, and archive items that are useful but not part of your visual diary. A short review is safer than a large deletion session because each action remains easy to explain and undo.

Features that are easy to confuse with these tools
Photo stacks are not Favorites
On Android, Google Photos can group similar backed-up photos into photo stacks in the Photos view. The stack’s top pick is distinct from a Favorite: choosing a top pick does not add a star. Stacks are an app-only view feature in the Android help and require backed-up photos, so they should not be used as a replacement for a named album or a deliberate Favorite list.
A stack is based on similarity and presentation, while an album is a manual grouping and a Favorite is your explicit selection. If you need to preserve a particular image as the one to share, star it even if it is not the stack’s top pick.
Document auto-archive has a special 30-day rule
Google’s document albums can automatically hide document photos older than 30 days, measured from each photo’s creation date. This is a documents-specific auto-archive setting, not the behavior of general Archive. Turning the setting off does not unarchive items that were already archived; restore those items separately if you want them back in the Photos view.
Do not apply the 30-day rule to ordinary photos. General Archive is manual unless another specialized feature acts on the item, and archived files still count toward storage.
Platform differences are normal
Web, Android, and iOS do not expose identical buttons or navigation. Album creation, sorting, Archive placement, and the Favorites collection can move as Google updates the apps. Use the platform-specific paths above as starting points, then follow the label that names the same action in your version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common organization mistakes
- “I removed a photo from an album and it disappeared.” Check the main Photos view and search. Removing it from an album should not delete the library item; deletion from the Photos section is a separate action.
- “Archiving did not free storage.” That is expected. Archived photos still count toward quota. Use storage management and deletion, not Archive, when capacity is the problem.
- “My archived photo is still in search.” Search and album visibility are intentionally retained for archived items.
- “I cannot find the Favorite button.” Open the image’s detail screen, inspect the star and overflow menu, and consider that your app version may place the control differently.
- “A Live album contains the wrong person.” Face matching can be imperfect. Remove the incorrect image and review the selected face groups.
- “A large album lacks a feature.” Albums can hold up to 20,000 photos or videos, but Google notes that some features may not be available for large albums.
- “Turning off document auto-archive did not restore my files.” That setting does not unarchive items already processed. Open Archive and unarchive the documents you want visible again.
- “A stack selected the wrong top image.” Photo stacks and Favorites are separate. Open the image you prefer and add the star manually; do not rely on the stack’s top pick.
- “I expected Archive to remove a photo from an album.” Archive does not change album membership. Remove the photo from the album separately if that is the goal.
Bottom line
Organize intentionally: put related images in albums, star only the standouts you want to retrieve quickly, and archive items that should remain searchable but out of the main timeline. Album and Archive actions preserve the library item, while Favorites simply add a marker. Treat deletion and storage cleanup as separate decisions.

Does deleting a Google Photos album delete the photos inside it?
No. Deleting an album removes the grouping, while its photos and videos remain in the main Google Photos library unless you separately delete those library items.

Do archived photos still use Google storage?
Yes. Archive hides items from the main Photos view, but archived photos continue to count toward your account storage quota.
Can one photo be in an album, marked Favorite, and archived?
Yes. Albums, Favorites, and Archive serve different purposes and can be applied to the same image at the same time.
How do I mark a Google Photos picture as a Favorite?
Open the image, find the star on its detail screen or in the overflow controls, and tap it. Tap the star again to remove the marker. Button placement can vary by app version.

What is the limit for a Google Photos album?
Google says one album can contain up to 20,000 photos or videos, although some features may not be available for very large albums.
Are Google Photos photo stacks the same as Favorites?
No. Photo stacks group similar backed-up photos in the Android app. A stack’s top pick is separate from the Favorite star.
What happens when document auto-archive is turned off?
