You can order Starbucks without the app by speaking directly with a barista at the café counter or drive-thru. Choose your drink from the in-store menu, place the order verbally, and ask that location which payment methods it accepts before you commit to the purchase. The app is not required for either in-person ordering format.

If you bring a clean reusable tumbler, thermos or travel mug, Starbucks says company-owned and licensed stores in the United States and Canada can use it. Tell the barista when ordering and hand over the cup without its lid. Because licensed stores operate in airports, hospitals, hotels, grocery stores and campuses as well as ordinary cafés, payment and handoff procedures can differ by location.

What you can do without the app

App-free Starbucks ordering has two standard routes: walk into a café and order at the counter, or use the drive-thru and speak with the barista through the speaker. In both cases, the employee enters the order at the store rather than receiving it through your phone. You can ask questions, change a drink while ordering and receive the beverage through the normal handoff for that service format.

The important distinction is between ordering and payment. Starbucks’ published material confirms the in-person ordering routes, but the reviewed official sources do not provide one payment list that applies to every Starbucks-branded location. Ask the specific store which methods it accepts before ordering, particularly when the store is in an airport, hospital, hotel, grocery store or campus.

Choose the right in-person format

Format Where you speak to a barista Personal-cup handoff What to verify
Café counter At the register inside the store Give the clean cup without its lid while ordering; the drink is returned in that cup Payment options and any local operating rules
Drive-thru At the ordering speaker, with any clarification at the pickup window Mention the cup while ordering; it is collected without its lid at the window using a contactless vessel Payment options and whether that location can complete the cup handoff as described

Neither format requires you to create an account or show a mobile order screen. If a location does not have a drive-thru, use the café counter. If the store is inside another business or facility, expect the host location’s procedures to affect the transaction.

How to order at a Starbucks café counter

  1. Enter the store and check the in-store menu. Use the menu displayed at that location rather than assuming that every licensed store has exactly the same selection, prices or ordering process.
  2. Wait for the register interaction. When the barista is ready, state the beverage and any choices you want included. Speaking directly lets you hear the employee repeat details and gives you an opportunity to correct an order before it is made.
  3. Declare a personal cup before handing it over. Say, “I brought my own clean personal cup,” before the drink is prepared. Starbucks’ personal-cup guidance specifically asks customers to tell the barista when ordering.
  4. Remove the lid and provide the cup. For café orders, Starbucks says the barista collects the cup without its lid and returns the finished drink in it. Keep the lid with you while the cup is being handled.
  5. Confirm the amount and pay using a method the store accepts. If you are unsure whether your preferred method works there, ask before the order is finalized. Do not assume that a card or other method accepted at one Starbucks-branded store is accepted at every one.
  6. Collect the drink and lid. Check that the beverage is in your cup if you requested that option, then replace the lid yourself when the handoff is complete.

If you do not have a personal cup, simply order normally and receive the beverage in the store’s serving cup. Bringing one is an optional waste-reduction choice, not a condition of app-free ordering.

How to order at the drive-thru

  1. Join the drive-thru and use the ordering speaker. Tell the barista what you want in the same way you would at the counter. If you need clarification, ask while the order is being repeated.
  2. Mention your clean personal cup during the order. Do this before reaching the pickup window so the team knows you intend to use the cup and can explain any location-specific procedure.
  3. Keep the cup ready without its lid. Starbucks’ instructions say the cup is collected at the pickup window without its lid. Have it accessible so you do not need to search for it while the vehicle is stopped.
  4. Follow the window handoff. Starbucks describes a contactless-vessel process: the barista takes the lid-free cup using a contactless vessel and returns it with the beverage. Follow the employee’s directions if that store uses a different practical arrangement.
  5. Ask about payment before completing the transaction if necessary. The drive-thru does not create a universal payment rule. A location operating under a host business may have different equipment or accepted methods from a company-owned café.
  6. Check the drink and secure the lid before leaving. Once the beverage is returned, put the lid back on and verify the order before pulling away.

Paying without the Starbucks app

Ordering without the app does not automatically tell you which payment methods are available. The official material reviewed for this guide does not establish a comprehensive, universal list of cash, debit, credit or contactless methods for every store. The practical rule is to ask the location before ordering: “Which payment methods do you accept here?”

Using a Starbucks Card

Starbucks Card terms say most North American Starbucks stores accept Starbucks Cards, but they also identify exceptions. Some airport, grocery and bookstore locations, as well as stores in Guam, may not accept them. A Starbucks-branded sign therefore is not enough to guarantee that the Card will work at the register.

If you intend to use a physical Starbucks Card, ask the barista or cashier to confirm acceptance before the order is entered. This is especially important at a licensed store inside another business, where the host’s systems can determine how payment is processed.

  • It’s a great way to treat a friend. It’s a convenient way to pre-pay for your own regular purchases.
  • Amazon.com Gift Cards cannot be used as a method of payment for this item.
  • Physical gift cards are delivered active via mail.

Using a printed eGift

The Card Terms & Conditions state that a recipient can print a Starbucks eGift and bring the printout into a store to make a purchase. If you plan to rely on a printed eGift, keep the code or barcode legible and ask the location whether it can process that form before ordering. This option is separate from placing a mobile order in the app: you are presenting the gift at the store for an in-person purchase.

When your preferred method is uncertain

  • Ask before ordering, not after the drink has been made.
  • At a licensed location, identify the store as being inside an airport, hospital, hotel, grocery store or campus when asking, because those settings can have different operating arrangements.
  • If the answer is no, ask which available method the location can accept and decide whether to continue.
  • Do not treat another Starbucks store’s experience as proof of this store’s policy.

Using a personal cup without the app

Starbucks says a clean reusable tumbler, thermos or travel mug can be used at company-owned and licensed stores in the United States and Canada. The cup is optional and does not replace the need to place the order with a barista. It also does not require a particular brand or size in the published guidance reviewed here.

What to bring

  • A reusable tumbler, thermos or travel mug that is clean before you arrive.
  • The cup without its lid when you hand it to the barista.
  • The lid kept separately so you can replace it after the beverage is returned.

Why the lid stays off

For a café order, the barista takes the lid-free cup and returns the drink in it. For a drive-thru order, Starbucks says the cup is collected at the pickup window without its lid using a contactless vessel, then returned with the beverage. Removing the lid gives the employee access to the opening while preserving the described contactless handling process.

What the policy does not promise

The guidance applies to company-owned and licensed stores in the United States and Canada; it is not a blanket statement about every country. It also does not promise identical procedures at every licensed site. If a store cannot accommodate the cup at that moment, ask the barista what serving option is available rather than insisting on a particular handoff.

Why licensed Starbucks locations can feel different

Not every Starbucks-branded store is operated as a conventional company-owned café. Licensed locations can be found in airports, hospitals, hotels, grocery stores and business or university campuses. Starbucks describes these settings as having different operational realities, even while aiming for a recognizable customer experience.

In a March 24, 2026 article about licensed coffeehouses, Starbucks senior vice president of U.S. Licensed Coffeehouse Business Aaron Koransky wrote: “Whether someone is grabbing coffee on their commute, at the airport, inside a hospital, at a hotel, or on a business or university campus, they expect the same unmistakable Starbucks experience – the same quality, care and handoff.” The statement describes the intended experience; it does not establish that every location has identical payment equipment, menus or ordering steps.

Questions to ask at a licensed store

  • Is this register operated by Starbucks or by the host business?
  • Which payment methods work at this location?
  • Can you use a Starbucks Card or a printed eGift here?
  • Can the team accept a clean personal cup for this café or drive-thru handoff?

Ask these questions at the particular store instead of relying on a policy remembered from a different setting. The answer may be clear at a normal café but different inside a terminal, ward, hotel lobby, supermarket or campus building.

Common situations and the best app-free approach

You do not own a smartphone

Go to the café counter or drive-thru and order verbally. The app is not required for either interaction. Ask about payment before the order is finalized.

The app is unavailable or you do not want to use it

Use the same in-person routes. Tell the barista the complete order, listen to the repeat-back and resolve any substitutions or questions before paying. There is no need to recreate a mobile order on your phone.

You have a Starbucks Card but are visiting an airport

Ask that airport location whether it accepts Starbucks Cards. The Card terms list some airport locations among the exceptions to general North American acceptance.

Starbucks eGift Card
  • Redemption: Instore
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.

You received an eGift by email

Print the eGift and bring it to a store, as allowed by the Card Terms & Conditions. Present it at the register and confirm that the location can process the printout before ordering.

You want to avoid a disposable cup

Bring a clean reusable cup and announce it while ordering. At a café, provide it without the lid; at a drive-thru, mention it at the speaker and follow the window handoff instructions.

You are ordering inside a grocery store, hospital or campus

Treat the counter as a licensed location until staff confirm otherwise. Ask about payment, Starbucks Card or eGift acceptance and personal-cup handling before placing the order.

Troubleshooting an app-free order

The barista says your payment method is not accepted

Do not assume the refusal is a system-wide Starbucks policy. Ask which methods this location accepts and decide whether to use one of those methods or cancel before preparation. A licensed store may use a host business’s register or payment rules.

The store cannot take your personal cup

Confirm that the cup is clean and that you offered it without the lid. If the team still cannot complete the handoff, accept the store’s available serving option or ask whether another nearby company-owned or licensed location can process a personal cup. The published guidance does not guarantee that every situation will be handled identically.

You forgot to mention the cup until pickup

Tell the employee immediately, but do not hand over a cup with the lid attached. The café and drive-thru instructions place the cup announcement before or during ordering so the team can prepare the handoff safely.

The drink is returned in the wrong container

Politely explain that you requested the personal-cup option and ask the barista to clarify what can be done at that location. At a drive-thru, remain at the window until the handoff is clear and the lid can be replaced.

You are unsure whether the store is company-owned or licensed

You do not need to identify the ownership model yourself. Ask the employee which payment and cup procedures apply at that store. The distinction matters because Starbucks-branded locations operate in multiple environments.

What Starbucks says about cup waste

Starbucks reports an average reduction of two million cups entering the waste stream each month in the United States through its personal-cup option. The company presents this as an average figure; the page reviewed does not display a publication year, and the figure is not an independent measurement.

Starbucks also says its redesigned cold cup uses 10–20% less plastic in the United States and Canada. That range is the company’s stated reduction for the redesigned cup, not a measurement of every beverage container or every store.

For recycling, Starbucks says more than 60% of U.S. households can recycle its cold cups through curbside or drop-off programs. Availability depends on the recycling service in a household’s area, so check local instructions rather than placing a cup in a bin automatically.

A concise checklist for ordering without the app

  • Choose the café counter or drive-thru.
  • Check the menu at that location.
  • Ask which payment methods the store accepts.
  • If using a Starbucks Card, verify acceptance because exceptions exist.
  • If using a printed eGift, bring the printout and confirm the store can process it.
  • For a personal cup, bring it clean and remove the lid before handoff.
  • At a café, give the cup to the barista while ordering.
  • At a drive-thru, mention the cup at the speaker and hand it over at the window as directed.
  • At an airport, hospital, hotel, grocery store or campus, expect local procedures and ask before ordering.

The practical answer

To order Starbucks without the app, walk up to the café register or use the drive-thru, tell the barista exactly what you want and ask that location how you can pay. A clean personal tumbler, thermos or travel mug is optional at company-owned and licensed U.S. and Canadian stores; provide it without the lid and follow the café or drive-thru handoff instructions. The only step that cannot be answered universally is payment, because Starbucks-branded locations do not all operate under identical conditions.
