To remove a people-search listing, submit a removal request through the site that displays it. If you live in California, you can also send a single request through the state’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) to registered data brokers. To limit future disclosure from motor vehicle records, check your state motor vehicle agency’s current privacy procedure. A listing by itself does not show that the site got the information from a DMV or that anyone broke the law.
What “DMV-linked” does—and doesn’t—tell you
The federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) concerns personal information contained in state motor vehicle records and information disclosed onward by recipients. It generally restricts DMV disclosure but allows disclosures for specified permissible uses. It also permits a DMV to offer an opt-out from unrestricted disclosure. The U.S. Department of Justice describes this framework in its DPPA materials.
A people-search page containing a name, address, or other personal detail does not establish that the information came from a motor vehicle record. Nor does the listing alone establish whether a disclosure was lawful. Treat removal from the site and limits on DMV disclosure as separate tasks.

Start with the listing itself
- Record what you found. Save the site name, the listing’s URL, and the specific information displayed. This helps you identify the correct listing when you contact the site; it does not prove the source of the information.
- Find the site’s own removal instructions. Look in its help, privacy, or request pages for terms such as “opt out,” “remove my information,” or “privacy rights.” Follow the site’s stated process for that listing. Procedures and response times differ, so use the current instructions on the site rather than assuming another service’s steps will apply.
- Check the result. Revisit the listing after the site has handled your request. If it remains, use the site’s stated follow-up or appeal route, if available. A removal from one site does not remove copies or separate listings on other sites.
California residents: submit a request through DROP
California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) lets eligible residents send one request to more than 600 registered data brokers included in the platform. The California Privacy Protection Agency (CalPrivacy) says it began accepting consumer requests on January 1, 2026. Use the official DROP platform and its current guidance to verify eligibility and submit.

- Verify California residency. DROP is for California residents, not a nationwide opt-out portal.
- Create your consumer profile. Provide the required verification information. You choose whether to add other profile details; accurate identifiers can help a broker match your request.
- Review what you are submitting. DROP’s terms explain that profile information is disclosed to brokers so they can process the request. Provide accurate details and consider which optional identifiers you are comfortable sharing.
- Submit once and monitor status. DROP sends the request to participating registered brokers in the platform. CalPrivacy says broker processing began August 1, 2026, and brokers must access DROP at least every 45 days. Status reporting can take up to 90 days.
These dates and intervals describe California’s 2026 program, not a guaranteed completion date for a particular listing or website.
Read each DROP status accurately
- Deleted: The broker matched you and deleted non-exempt personal information. This does not mean it disappeared from every site or source.
- Exempted: The broker matched information but may retain it under a legal exemption.
- Opted-out: The broker did not make an exact match, but must not sell or share the data. The data may still be held.
- Record not found: The broker did not find the information or could not locate you using the submitted details. If appropriate, review the identifiers you provided and add accurate information before checking again.
- Pending: The broker has not yet processed the request.
What DROP may not remove
DROP is aimed at registered data brokers covered by the platform, not every site that publishes personal information. CalPrivacy’s DROP guidance explains that a request may not remove information you supplied directly to a business with which you have a direct relationship, exempt information, or publicly available information. Use the people-search site’s own process for a listing that remains outside DROP’s reach.

For DMV disclosure, check your state agency
The DPPA allows a state motor vehicle agency to establish an opt-out from unrestricted disclosure, but the procedure is state-specific. Find your state’s motor vehicle agency and read its current privacy, records-disclosure, or personal-information instructions. Do not assume a people-search removal request changes what the DMV may disclose, or that a DMV opt-out removes information already held by third parties.
The DOJ’s DPPA explanation is a general legal overview, not a substitute for current statutory text or your state’s rules. If you need to determine whether a particular disclosure was lawful, the listing alone is not enough to answer that question.
