In God of War (2018), a “red crystal door” can mean two different obstacles in Chapter 8, “Behind the Lock.” If you’re facing a metal door with a lock plate, use the Magic Chisel and strike its glowing binding points. If red sap is blocking a passage or coffin, throw Shatter Crystal at it and detonate the crystal with Atreus’ Shock Arrow. These are separate puzzles, so first identify what is physically blocking your way.
Open a door sealed with the Magic Chisel
A Chisel-sealed door has a metal lock plate. It does not open by shooting red crystal or sap. Interact with the door to begin the lock sequence, then use the Chisel to find and break the plate’s binding points. Prima’s Chapter 8 walkthrough and the GameFAQs guides describe the same basic process.

- Interact with the sealed door.
- Move the Chisel piece across the lock plate. Watch for the strongest glow; that marks a binding point. Controller vibration can also grow stronger when the Chisel is over the right spot.
- Strike the plate at that point. Move the Chisel to find each remaining binding point and strike again until the plate breaks.
- Pull the door open.
Clear red sap with Shatter Crystal
If the obstruction is red sap rather than a metal lock plate, use Shatter Crystal. Throw a piece at the sap, then have Atreus fire a Shock Arrow to detonate it. In the corridor puzzle, this frees the blue crystal hanging overhead.

- Throw a piece at the red sap holding the blue crystal.
- Have Atreus fire a Shock Arrow at the crystal to destroy the sap.
- Pick up the freed blue crystal and place it on the stand.
- Switch Atreus to Light Arrows and have him shoot the blue crystal to reveal the Realm Tear.
A sap-covered coffin is a separate obstruction: get another piece of Shatter Crystal, throw it at the sap, and detonate it with a Shock Arrow.

At the Runic Gate, solve the gate and coffin separately
If you’re standing beside a Runic Gate, the nearby red crystal is not the gate’s lock. The gate opens when you break its three runic seal stones; the red sap nearby covers a coffin. Prima’s walkthrough and the GameFAQs accounts distinguish these tasks.
- One seal stone is above the passage behind you.
- One is inside a hole in the far wall, viewed from the balcony.
- The last is near the top of an icefall and visible from the lower balcony.
To reach the coffin, fire a Shock Arrow at the Shatter Crystal in the metal basin to the right of the gate. The basin drops. Shoot the crystal again to remove the red sap covering the coffin.

Identify the obstacle before using an ability
- Metal door and lock plate: find the Chisel’s strongest glow and strike each binding point.
- Red sap: throw Shatter Crystal at it and detonate the crystal with a Shock Arrow.
- Runic Gate: break all three seal stones; handle any nearby sap-covered coffin as its own puzzle.
The distinction matters in Chapter 8, “Behind the Lock,” where Chisel-sealed doors and Shatter Crystal obstacles appear in the same broader sequence. The walkthroughs identify sections around Jarl’s Stronghold and Jarl’s Port, so the chapter name alone does not identify one unique “red crystal door.”
