Lenovo’s Hardware Maintenance Manual for the IdeaPad Slim 5a (16″, 11) documents how to remove the lower case and replace components including the M.2 solid-state drive. Use that manual—not a generic laptop-opening guide—for the actual procedure, and check your machine type in Lenovo Parts Lookup before buying a replacement. The manual’s parts listings do not establish that every configuration has upgradeable memory or the same SSD fit.

Before opening the laptop

Start with Lenovo’s Hardware Maintenance Manual and parts overview. Its table of contents includes “General guidelines” and a “Lower case” removal procedure, followed by component-specific replacement topics. Read those sections for the applicable instructions before attempting disassembly; the topic listing alone does not establish screw counts, tool sizes, pry points, or the sequence for your configuration.

  • Identify the laptop’s exact machine type, or use its serial number, and check the corresponding parts and substitutions in Lenovo Parts Lookup before ordering.
  • Follow the manual’s general guidelines and the lower-case removal instructions. Do not assume that a procedure or illustration for another configuration applies to yours.
  • Check whether the relevant part is classified as a self-service CRU, optional-service CRU, or FRU. Lenovo says FRU work is more complicated, recommends trained service technicians for it, and advises customers who elect to replace an FRU to follow the instructions carefully.

Lenovo warns that “Product illustrations might be slightly different from your product.” Its manual also notes that features and accessories can vary by country or region.

How to remove the bottom cover

Lenovo calls the bottom cover the “lower case.” The official manual includes a procedure under that name; consult it alongside “General guidelines” in the manual for the exact steps for this laptop. The available parts and topic listings do not provide enough detail to safely specify fastener count, tool size, or where and how to release the cover, so do not rely on guessed instructions.

Once the cover is off, use the manual’s component-specific section for the part you intend to service. Lenovo’s hardware replacement topics list, among others, the battery pack, M.2 SSD, Wi-Fi card, memory shield or absorbing mylar, memory module, heat sink, fan, speakers, I/O board, cables, display module, and upper case. This is a list of documented service topics, not a claim that each component is a practical consumer upgrade.

Can you upgrade the SSD?

Lenovo explicitly lists an “M.2 solid-state drive” as a replacement component, making SSD replacement the clearest upgrade possibility supported by the manual. However, the listing does not establish the compatible drive length or other configuration-specific requirements, nor a maximum capacity. Before choosing a drive, look up your exact machine type in Lenovo Parts Lookup and confirm the correct part or substitution. Do not assume a particular M.2 size or that a drive tested in another configuration will fit.

Can you upgrade the RAM?

The manual lists both a memory module and memory shielding material among its replacement topics. That confirms memory-related service documentation, but it does not establish that every IdeaPad Slim 5a (16″, Gen 11) configuration has a user-accessible upgrade slot. The listing also does not specify how much memory is soldered, the supported module type, or the maximum capacity for each machine type. Check the exact configuration and its parts in Lenovo Parts Lookup before treating memory as upgradeable.

Other components covered by the manual

Lenovo’s replacement topics also cover the battery, Wi-Fi card, cooling parts, speakers, I/O board, cables, and display assemblies. These are repair or service options; their inclusion does not mean they are recommended upgrades or user-serviceable parts on every model. Check each part’s CRU or FRU classification and the machine-type-specific parts listing before planning work.

Why a video’s configuration may not match yours

LaptopMedia’s IdeaPad Slim 5a (16″, Gen 11) disassembly video, published August 9, 2026, identifies its tested system as having a Ryzen AI 7 450 processor, Radeon 860M graphics, 32 GB DDR5-5600 memory, a 1 TB NVMe SSD, and a 16-inch 2880 × 1800 120 Hz OLED display. Those are specifications of that creator’s test configuration, not proof that every regional SKU has the same parts or can accept the same upgrades. Use the video as model-specific context, but verify compatibility and follow Lenovo’s procedure for your machine.
