The ASUS ExpertBook Ultra (B9406) bottom cover is reported to come off after removing ten Torx T5 screws and releasing the perimeter clips with a thin plastic pry tool. Inside, the practical upgrade is replacing the single M.2 2280 SSD: the LPDDR5X memory is soldered, so it cannot be upgraded after purchase. Exact specifications vary by B9406 configuration and region, so check the full product number before buying parts.
Before you open the B9406
This opening sequence is based on LaptopMedia’s B9406 guide, published September 30, 2026; it is not a claim that every B9406 variant has been physically tested. ASUS also publishes a teardown video for the B9406CAA, but says actual machine parts may differ and that demonstrated tools are for demonstration, not an endorsement. Follow the service information for your exact product number and country.
- Power the laptop off and place it on a soft, clean surface.
- Have a Torx T5 screwdriver and a thin plastic pry tool available. These match the guide’s described procedure; ASUS does not endorse a particular tool kit.
- Keep the bottom screws organized by hole. The guide reports that the ten screws are not all the same length.
How to remove the bottom cover
- Remove the ten bottom screws. Use a Torx T5 screwdriver and preserve each screw’s original position because lengths differ.
- Release the perimeter clips. Work a thin plastic pry tool around the edge to loosen the clips. Avoid forcing the panel if a clip remains engaged.
- Lift off the bottom cover. Set it aside without pulling or snagging internal cables.
- Disconnect the battery before internal work. Disconnect its cable from the motherboard before touching the SSD, fans, or other components.
ASUS’s B9406CAA teardown video shows the bottom case at 00:35, the battery connector at 01:59, and the M.2 2280 SSD at 02:41: ASUS Support. ASUS’s service guide listing includes the B9406CAA maintenance guide; check the current country-specific materials and exact product number before proceeding. The listed English revision E28431 is dated September 30, 2026. ASUS cautions that specifications may change without notice.
What can you upgrade or replace?
| Component | What is established | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | LaptopMedia reports soldered LPDDR5X with no SO-DIMM slots. ASUS USA lists 32 GB onboard and a 32 GB maximum for its B9406CAA configuration. | Choose the required memory capacity when buying; there is no post-purchase RAM-module upgrade. |
| Internal SSD | One M.2 2280 NVMe slot. ASUS USA lists a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 drive for B9406CAA; the LaptopMedia reviewed configuration also had a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 x4 drive. | A compatible drive can replace the installed SSD, but there is no second internal SSD slot. Back up data and plan how to migrate or restore it before replacement. |
| Battery | ASUS USA lists a 70 Wh battery. LaptopMedia describes a screw-secured battery and support frame that can be removed as an assembly. | Replacement is a service option, but confirm the correct part and procedure with ASUS for your product number. |
| Cooling fans | LaptopMedia reports that both fans are accessible after removing the cover; removing the complete cooling assembly requires further disassembly. | Access for inspection or routine dust cleaning is different from full cooling-system service. |
| Wireless hardware | LaptopMedia reports that the Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE211 component in its reviewed configuration is soldered beneath part of the cooling assembly. | Do not assume a plug-in wireless-card upgrade is possible; this observation applies to the reviewed configuration. |
Can you upgrade the RAM?
No, not on the configurations described in the sources: the LPDDR5X memory is soldered to the motherboard and there are no SO-DIMM slots. ASUS USA lists 32 GB onboard and 32 GB maximum for its B9406CAA specification. ASUS’s January 23, 2026 global launch announcement describes series configurations up to 64 GB onboard, but that series-level figure does not mean a 32 GB US B9406CAA can be upgraded to 64 GB. Verify the full product number and regional ASUS specification before purchase.

What SSD fits, and can you add a second one?
The reported internal storage position is one M.2 2280 NVMe slot, so an SSD replacement—not adding a second internal drive—is the supported upgrade path described here. ASUS lists a 1 TB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 drive for the US B9406CAA, while its global announcement describes multiple PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 storage options across the series. Those series-level options should not be taken as confirmation that every drive or capacity is compatible with every regional SKU.
Before buying a replacement, check the exact model’s current ASUS specifications and service materials for drive format and interface. Back up important files and arrange a migration or recovery plan; replacing the drive can remove access to the existing installation and data. ASUS publishes a model-specific B9406CAA M.2 2280 SSD replacement video.

Battery disconnection and further maintenance
After opening the cover, disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard before working on the SSD or cooling system. LaptopMedia describes the 70 Wh battery and its tray-shaped support frame as a screw-secured assembly. Treat this as service guidance, not proof of a tested repair or a warranty determination. For a battery replacement or other repair, use the current ASUS service guide for your country or contact ASUS support.

The two fans are reported to be reachable with the bottom cover removed. The full cooling module needs additional disassembly, so fan access should not be mistaken for a simple complete cooling-system removal.

Check your exact B9406 configuration
Specifications are not uniform across every ExpertBook Ultra configuration. ASUS’s global January 2026 announcement describes series-level memory options up to 64 GB and multiple storage options; ASUS USA’s B9406CAA page lists 32 GB maximum and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. These statements cover different scopes, not an upgrade path between capacities. Check the full product number and the ASUS specifications for your market. ASUS states that specifications are subject to change without notice.
For region-specific service instructions, ASUS lists the B9406CAA service guide and maintenance resources, with service-location support and Premium Care availability varying by country. The ASUS video and service materials are model-specific; confirm applicability before following instructions on a different B9406 variant.
