The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 (PHN16-I31) bottom cover is held by nine Torx T6 screws and perimeter clips. A third-party guide for this exact model reports two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD positions beneath the cover. Shut the laptop down, remove the screws, then carefully release the clips with a thin plastic pry tool. Specifications and slot occupancy can vary by regional SKU, so verify your exact model before buying parts.
What you need to know before opening the PHN16-I31
- Use a Torx T6 driver and a thin plastic pry tool. Work on a clean, soft surface.
- Take care around the large rear and side exhaust openings; the guide warns that prying there can damage the plastic frame or radiator fins.
- The procedure below is reported by LaptopMedia’s PHN16-I31 guide. It is not an Acer service procedure.
- Do not substitute instructions for the PHN16-72 or PHN16-71. Acer lists support for PHN16-I31 separately from those earlier model families; the shared Helios Neo 16 name does not establish that their internals or procedures match.
How to remove the bottom cover
- Shut the laptop down and place it on a clean, soft surface.
- Remove the nine Torx T6 screws retaining the bottom cover. Keep them together so they are not lost.
- Starting carefully at the perimeter, use a thin plastic pry tool to release the cover clips. Avoid forcing the tool near the rear and side exhausts, where the frame and radiator fins may be damaged.
- Once the perimeter clips are released, lift the cover away. The guide reports that the battery is at the front and the memory, storage, wireless module, and fans are accessible.
Acer’s indexed lifecycle guide is for the PHN16-72, not the I31, so its service steps should not be treated as confirmed I31 instructions. Acer’s March 2026 user manual search result includes PHN16-I31, but it is a user manual rather than a service guide.
What can be upgraded inside
Memory: two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots
LaptopMedia reports two SO-DIMM slots beneath protective metal covers. Its tested unit had one 16 GB SK hynix DDR5-5600 module. Acer’s Malaysia specification for the PHN16-I31-55MB lists DDR5 memory at 5600 MT/s and a maximum system memory of 32 GB. Those figures apply to that SKU, not necessarily every regional PHN16-I31 configuration.

Storage: two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe positions
The exact-model guide reports two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe positions. Its tested laptop had a 1 TB SSD installed and the second position empty; that is not a guarantee that your unit’s second slot is free. Acer lists PCIe NVMe 4.0 storage for the PHN16-I31-55MB.
A PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD is the best-supported optional drive type from these specifications. Check your laptop’s exact SKU, whether the position is occupied, and physical clearance before buying. Acer’s PHN16-I31-55MB page says its PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD offers read and write speeds “up to 7 GB/s” and describes that as five times faster than SATA; this is Acer’s vendor specification, not an independent benchmark.

Wireless module
The guide describes a replaceable wireless card and identifies an Intel Killer Wi-Fi 6E AX1675i in its tested unit. Acer also lists that wireless model for the PHN16-I31-55MB. Verify the installed module and antenna compatibility before ordering a replacement.

Battery and fans
The guide reports that the battery is secured with screws and that both fans are accessible after removing the cover. It identifies the tested battery as AP24B7T, with 91 Wh rated and 92 Wh typical capacity. These are guide-reported details for its tested configuration, not sufficient information to order a replacement: check the installed battery label and exact SKU.

What you cannot upgrade, and when to stop
CPU and GPU
The guide reports that the CPU and GPU are soldered to the motherboard, so they are not upgradeable. For most owners, memory and storage are the practical upgrade paths.
Cooling assembly
Accessing the fans is different from removing the complete cooling assembly. LaptopMedia describes full assembly removal as advanced and says thermal interface materials must be replaced before reassembly. If your job requires disturbing the cooling assembly or replacing board-level parts, consider professional service rather than treating it like a routine RAM or SSD upgrade.
Check the exact SKU before choosing parts
PHN16-I31 is a family, not a guarantee of identical parts or specifications worldwide. Acer Malaysia’s PHN16-I31-55MB listing names an i5-14450HX, RTX 5060, 16 GB of memory, 1 TB PCIe NVMe 4.0 storage, and a 32 GB maximum memory capacity. Acer Vietnam lists PHN16-I31-72XE and PHN16-I31-74MN with different graphics and display specifications. Treat each product page as specific to its listed market and SKU, and do not transfer specifications from PHN16-72 or PHN16-71.
