Chrome’s ability to open JPEG XL (.jxl) images depends on your browser build and configuration. Chrome release notes document JPEG XL decoding in an origin trial and later in a beta announcement, but those sources do not establish that standard stable Chrome opens JXL files by default. If Chrome does display your file, it has decoded it; that does not mean Chrome can convert it to JPEG or PNG.
Can Chrome open JPEG XL files?
It may, depending on the Chrome build and its configuration. Chrome refers to the format as image/jxl and describes JPEG XL as standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. Its release information, however, does not support a blanket claim that every ordinary Chrome installation can open .jxl files.

Chrome 145 documented JPEG XL decoding in Blink as an origin trial, gated behind the enable-jxl-image-format feature flag and the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. An origin-trial implementation is not proof that the feature is generally enabled in stable Chrome. Read Chrome 145 release notes.
A Chrome 155 beta announcement dated September 16, 2026, also lists JPEG XL decoding support in Blink, using jxl-rs, a memory-safe pure Rust decoder. That announcement concerns the beta channel; it does not establish that the feature is enabled by default in stable Chrome or available through a user-facing setting. How to try opening a .jxl image in Chrome
- Open Chrome and try opening the .jxl file using the same method you would use for another image, such as dragging it into a browser tab.
- If the image appears, Chrome has decoded it in your particular browser build and configuration.
- If Chrome shows an error or does not display the image, the release notes cited above do not establish a universal setting that will enable JXL support in stable Chrome. The Chrome 145 trial flags are not a guaranteed fix for current installations.
Opening a JXL image is not the same as converting it
Opening, or decoding, means displaying the image. Converting means exporting a new file in a different format, such as JPEG or PNG. Chrome’s documentation describes JPEG XL decoding; it does not document a workflow for saving a local .jxl file as JPEG or PNG. If you need a different file format, use a separate converter. The Chrome sources cited here do not verify a particular converter or its safety, supported platforms, or steps, so no specific tool is recommended.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a JXL image may not open in your Chrome
JPEG XL support has been documented in specific trial and beta contexts, which is not the same as universal availability in stable Chrome. Whether a file displays therefore depends on the browser build and configuration in use. The cited announcements do not determine the behavior of every current stable installation or every individual JXL file.
