The quickest way to open IIS Manager in Windows 11 is to press Windows + R, type inetmgr, and press Enter. If Windows cannot find the command, install the IIS Management Console first; IIS is not enabled by default on a standard Windows installation.
Method 1: Open IIS Manager with the Run command
This is the fastest method and works from the desktop, File Explorer, or another application.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
inetmgr. - Select OK, or press Enter.
Windows should open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. You can use the same command in Command Prompt, PowerShell, Windows Terminal, or Start search:

On Windows 11, Command Prompt and PowerShell may open inside Windows Terminal. That changes the appearance of the console, not the command you need to enter.

Method 2: Open it from Windows Search
- Open Start, or press the Windows key.
- Search for
IISorIIS Manager. - Select Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager from the results.
If the search produces no IIS Manager result, the management console is probably not installed. Follow the installation steps below rather than searching for a different shortcut.
Method 3: Open IIS Manager from Control Panel
The traditional Control Panel route is still available in Windows 11:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security.
- Open Administrative Tools.
- Double-click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
You can also press Windows + R, enter control, and select OK to open Control Panel.

If inetmgr does not work
If Windows displays a message such as “Windows cannot find ‘inetmgr’,” one of these conditions usually applies:
| What happened | What to do |
|---|---|
| IIS is not installed | Enable IIS and its management console through Windows Features. |
| The web server is installed but IIS Manager is missing | Enable the IIS Management Console component specifically. |
| Installation did not complete | Restart Windows if requested, then check Windows Features again. |
| The device is managed or offline | Check Windows Update, WSUS, Group Policy, or the organization’s feature-installation source. |
Install IIS Manager through Windows Features
The most dependable way to add the console is the classic Windows Features dialog.
Rank #2
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
optionalfeatures, then select OK. - In Windows Features, expand Internet Information Services.
- Expand Web Management Tools.
- Select IIS Management Console. If you also need to host websites, select the required components under World Wide Web Services.
- Select OK and allow Windows to install the components.
- Restart the computer if Windows requests it.
- Press Windows + R, type
inetmgr, and select OK.
Selecting only web-server components may install IIS without giving you the graphical management console. Make sure IIS Management Console is selected.
Try Windows 11 Settings
On current Windows 11 builds, optional features are managed from:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Settings → System → Optional features
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Go to System → Optional features.
- Select View features beside Add an optional feature.
- Search for the IIS feature you need, select it, and choose Next.
- Review the selection and select Add.
Some older supported Windows 11 builds show Optional features under Settings → Apps instead. IIS is normally enabled through the Windows Features dialog, however, and not every IIS subcomponent necessarily appears in the Settings catalog. If you cannot find IIS in Settings, press Windows + R, run optionalfeatures, and use that dialog.
Install IIS components with PowerShell
PowerShell is useful when you want to identify the exact feature names or configure several computers consistently. Open PowerShell as an administrator, then list the optional features in the current Windows installation:
Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online
To filter the list for IIS-related entries, run:
Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online | Where-Object FeatureName -like '*IIS*'
After identifying the required feature name, enable it with:
Rank #3
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName "<feature-name>" -All
Replace <feature-name> with the name returned by the discovery command. The -Online option targets the Windows installation currently running, while -All enables required parent features and default dependencies.
For example, do not copy a guessed feature name blindly. Feature names can vary by Windows version and component. Use Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online first, then enable the exact IIS Management Console entry shown on your computer.
When feature installation fails
Windows may need to download feature files through Windows Update. An offline computer, WSUS configuration, Group Policy restriction, or restricted corporate update source can prevent installation even when you have administrator access.
If you have an appropriate alternate source of Windows feature files, PowerShell supports this pattern:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName "<feature-name>" -Source "C:pathtosource" -LimitAccess
-Source specifies the alternate files, and -LimitAccess prevents DISM from attempting to contact Windows Update. Use a source that matches the installed Windows version and build; an incompatible source can produce another installation error.

Do you need to run IIS Manager as administrator?
You can launch IIS Manager normally with inetmgr; there is no separate administrator version of that command. However, many server and configuration changes require administrative permissions. Windows may display a User Account Control prompt when an operation needs elevation.
If IIS Manager opens but you cannot change a setting, sign in with an account that has the required permissions or launch your terminal with Run as administrator before using administrative commands.
What you see after IIS Manager opens
The left-hand Connections pane normally contains your local computer. Expand the computer name to view areas such as:
- Application Pools for worker-process settings and application-pool identities.
- Sites for website bindings, physical paths, authentication, and directory browsing.
- Server Certificates for certificates used by IIS bindings.
- Server-level configuration features such as logging, MIME types, and request filtering.
If no site appears, IIS Manager may be installed without a configured website. Opening the console and creating or managing a site are separate tasks.

Quickest solution
- Press Windows + R.
- Run
inetmgr. - If it fails, run
optionalfeatures. - Enable Internet Information Services → Web Management Tools → IIS Management Console.
- Run
inetmgragain.
This sequence avoids relying on a missing Start-menu shortcut and directly checks the component that provides the IIS graphical interface.

FAQ
What is the command to open IIS Manager in Windows 11?
Press Windows + R, type inetmgr, and press Enter. The command also works in Command Prompt, PowerShell, Windows Terminal, and Start search.
Why does Windows say it cannot find inetmgr?
The IIS Management Console may not be installed, IIS may have been removed, or a Windows component installation may not have completed. Run optionalfeatures and enable IIS Management Console under Internet Information Services → Web Management Tools.
Where is IIS in Windows 11 Settings?
On current Windows 11 builds, open Settings → System → Optional features, then select View features. Older supported builds may show the page under Settings → Apps → Optional features. If IIS is not listed, use optionalfeatures because IIS is normally enabled through Windows Features.
Is IIS enabled by default in Windows 11?
No. IIS is a Windows component that normally must be enabled before IIS Manager can be used.
Can I open IIS Manager without administrator access?
You can usually launch the console without entering a special command or elevation. Administrative permissions are still required for many IIS configuration changes, and User Account Control may request approval.
Can I install IIS Manager with PowerShell?
Yes. First run Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online to identify the exact feature name, then use Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName "<feature-name>" -All in an elevated PowerShell window.
The Bottom Line
Use inetmgr to open IIS Manager. If the command fails, enable IIS Management Console through optionalfeatures; installing other IIS web-server components alone does not guarantee that the management GUI is present.
