In Safari on iPhone, touch and hold a link and tap Open in New Tab to open it separately. To switch between pages, open the tab overview and tap a preview; to close one, use its close control. The tab-overview button can appear in different places depending on your Safari layout, so use the control shown on your screen.

How to open a new tab in Safari on iPhone

  1. Open Safari and go to the page with the link you want.
  2. Touch and hold the link.
  3. Tap Open in New Tab.

The new page may open in the foreground or in the background, depending on your setting. To keep viewing the current page while Safari opens new links separately, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Open Links and select In Background. This setting controls whether a new link takes focus; it is not required to create a tab. The menu route and labels can vary by iOS version. See Apple’s instructions for opening and closing Safari tabs.

How to find and switch to an open tab

  1. Tap the Tabs button to open the tab overview. If you do not see that button in your layout, tap More > All Tabs.
  2. Scan the page previews and tap the one you want to view.

If a page you expect is missing, check whether a different Tab Group is selected. Safari keeps tabs organized by group, so a tab in another group will not appear in the current group’s overview.

Use Tab Groups to organize pages

Tab Groups are optional; you do not need to create one to open, find, or close tabs. They can help separate pages by task or topic. Safari lets you create and rename groups, move tabs between groups, reorder tabs, and pin a tab within a group. Details are in Apple’s guide to organizing Safari tabs on iPhone.

View tabs open on another Apple device

To see tabs from another device, sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices and enable Safari in iCloud settings. On iPhone, enable iCloud Tabs on the Safari start page for those tabs to appear. If they do not show, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking that device software is current and that two-factor authentication is enabled. See Apple’s iCloud Tabs setup and troubleshooting guide.
