Insert the SD card, open the Files app, and select the card’s name in the left panel. Open a file by double-clicking it. Before removing the card, select its Eject control in Files.
Open the SD card in Files
- Insert the SD or microSD card into a compatible slot. If your Chromebook has no suitable slot, use a compatible card reader or adapter; port and hardware support vary by model. Google lists SD and microSD cards and adapters among Chromebook peripherals.
- Open the Files app.
- In the left panel, select the card’s name or the name shown for the connected storage device.
- Browse to the file you want and double-click it to open. The file must be in a format that ChromeOS or an installed app can open.
Copy files from the card to your Chromebook
In Files, select the files on the card and drag them to My files in the left panel. This copies the files to the Chromebook so you can access them there without browsing the card.
Eject the card before removing it
- In Files, find the card in the left panel.
- Select the card’s Eject control.
- After it is ejected, remove it from the slot or reader.
Google recommends safely ejecting external storage before physical removal. Google Chromebook Help explains how to open and manage files on a Chromebook.

Check the connection and card reader
Confirm that the card is fully inserted and that the reader fits the Chromebook’s actual port. A Chromebook without a compatible built-in slot needs a suitable reader or adapter. If possible, test the card and reader on another computer to help identify whether the issue is with the card, reader, or Chromebook.

Check the filesystem and ChromeOS
Google lists FAT, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, MTP, and NTFS as accessible external-storage formats on Chromebooks. Journaled HFS+, ISO9660, and UDF are read-only. If Files says the device is unsupported, check its format and update ChromeOS. Google notes that some external devices may not work with a Chromebook. Protect files before considering a format
Google documents formatting as a possible fix if a device is not recognized or a partition cannot be mounted. Formatting erases the storage device. Back up files elsewhere first; if the data matters and you cannot back it up, do not format the card as a routine troubleshooting step. If the card works on another computer, you can copy or upload its files to a cloud service such as Google Drive and then open them on the Chromebook. If an Android app cannot access a mounted card
This is a different issue from a card missing in Files. Google says external-drive read/write permission for Android apps can be managed in Settings → System preferences → Storage and power → Storage management → External storage preference. Review that setting when the card appears in Files but a particular Android app cannot use it. Google Chromebook Help describes the external-storage preference.
