To inspect a Windows registry stored on an external drive, load the relevant hive file from that drive into Registry Editor. In Windows, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, choose File > Load Hive, open a file such as SYSTEM in the offline installation’s WindowsSystem32config folder, and assign it a temporary name. When finished, select that temporary key and choose File > Unload Hive. The drive letter may change between normal Windows and Recovery Environment, so verify it before opening the file.
Before you begin: find the offline Windows installation
Connect the external drive and wait for Windows to recognize it. Find the letter assigned to the drive in the environment you are using, then locate the installation’s WindowsSystem32config folder. In Recovery Environment, the letter may differ from the one shown when Windows starts normally; identify the volume containing the intended Windows directory rather than assuming it is C:. Microsoft’s offline troubleshooting example uses the OS drive letter as a path variable when loading a hive.
Common hive files in that folder include SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, SAM, SECURITY, and DEFAULT. Choose the file that corresponds to the setting or data you need; the example below uses SYSTEM. Microsoft describes these files and the Load Hive workflow in its registry editing instructions.

- Open Registry Editor in the Windows environment where you want to inspect the file.
- Select
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEin the left pane. - Choose File > Load Hive, browse to the offline hive file, and open it. For example, the path might be
E:WindowsSystem32configSYSTEMif the external drive is currently assignedE:. - When prompted, enter a unique temporary name, such as
OfflineSYSTEM. - Browse the loaded data under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEOfflineSYSTEM. Use the temporary name you chose if it differs from this example.
Loading the file mounts that hive under the temporary name in the current computer’s registry; it does not make the external Windows installation’s registry the active registry. Microsoft demonstrates this Load Hive procedure for offline troubleshooting in its registry editing guidance.

Choose Registry Editor or the command line
Registry Editor is convenient when you need to browse interactively. The reg commands are useful for repeatable or scripted operations, provided you have verified the hive path and temporary key name. Microsoft documents reg load for loading hive files and lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as applicable versions; see its reg load reference. The corresponding unload syntax is documented in the reg unload reference.

reg unload HKLMOfflineSYSTEMReplace E: and OfflineSYSTEM with the drive letter and temporary key you actually use. The example is a syntax pattern, not confirmation that a particular drive letter or hive is correct for your computer.

Unload the hive when you are done
In Registry Editor, select the temporary hive key and choose File > Unload Hive. From the command line, run reg unload HKLMOfflineSYSTEM, substituting your temporary key name. Unloading removes the section mounted with reg load; do this before closing Registry Editor or ending the command-line task.
Inspect cautiously; back up before editing
If you only need to inspect data, avoid changing values. Microsoft warns, “Don’t edit the registry directly unless you have no alternative,” and advises backing it up first if direct editing is necessary. Incorrect changes can damage Windows or require reinstalling it. Follow instructions specific to the problem rather than making unrelated edits. If the hive cannot be opened
First confirm that the drive is accessible, that you have selected the correct Windows installation, and that the file exists at the path you entered. If the drive is unreadable, encrypted, damaged, or lacks a Windows directory, that is a separate access or recovery issue; loading a registry hive does not resolve it. The documented procedure uses built-in Windows tools on a drive Windows can already access.
