To open an Islamic banking account in Bangladesh, choose a bank and account type, check that you meet its eligibility rules, prepare the required identity and nominee documents, then apply through the bank’s available branch or online route. Requirements vary by bank and product. Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC (IBBPLC) provides a useful example: its Mudaraba Savings Account checklist includes a signed form, identification, photographs and nominee details, while its e-KYC route is limited to eligible natural persons with a valid NID.

1. Choose an account that fits how you will use it

Start with your transaction needs, not just the word “Islamic.” Banks use different account structures and terms. At IBBPLC, a Mudaraba Savings Account is described for non-trading customers who want to save and make relatively few transactions. Its Al-Wadeah Current Account is designed for more frequent use and allows unlimited transactions, but pays no profit.

IBBPLC account Typical use described by the bank Profit treatment Published minimum balance
Mudaraba Savings Account Personal savings and relatively few transactions Variable profit; provisional payments and annual adjustment may apply Tk 500
Al-Wadeah Current Account Frequent transactions, including eligible personal and business use No profit Tk 1,000

These balances are the amounts published on IBBPLC’s product pages when accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that the terms will remain unchanged. Review the current Mudaraba Savings Account and Al-Wadeah Current Account pages before applying.

Understand how savings profit is described

IBBPLC says Mudaraba savings profit is variable. Its product information describes provisional payments twice a year, with any further amount subject to the annual final calculation. It also describes a lowest-balance basis and a withdrawal condition. These are not a fixed or guaranteed annual rate. Ask the bank how the current calculation and withdrawal rules apply to your expected use. The bank’s Deposit Products page says, “The rate of profit paid is variable.”

2. Confirm eligibility, balance and the right form

For IBBPLC’s Mudaraba Savings Account, the published eligibility includes Bangladeshi nationals aged 18 or older. The bank also describes joint operation and guardian opening for a minor. Its Al-Wadeah Current Account page lists multiple personal and business eligibility categories. Do not assume that a rule for one product or applicant type applies to another.

Choose the form category for the actual applicant and product. IBBPLC’s forms index separates individual, term deposit, Waqf, organizational, government/semi-government/autonomous and offshore forms. Business, minor/guardian, joint and other non-standard applications may need different paperwork from an individual account application.

3. Gather the documents for your application

For the IBBPLC Mudaraba Savings Account, the listed documents are:

  • A completed and signed account-opening form.
  • One accepted identity document: NID, valid passport or driving licence.
  • Two recent passport-size photographs of the applicant, attested by an introducer.
  • The nominee’s NID and photograph.
  • A recent utility bill if the present address differs from the address on the identity document.

The bank may request additional documents based on your circumstances. Confirm the checklist with the branch or the bank’s official product page, particularly if you are applying jointly, for a minor, or on behalf of an organization.

4. Apply online only if your case fits the e-KYC route

IBBPLC’s e-KYC portal states that its online route is for natural persons with a valid NID. It asks applicants to select an account, upload a customer photograph and images of both sides of the NID, provide nominee photo or NID information, enter customer and KYC details, and proceed to account creation. The portal does not establish that every account type or applicant can be opened online.

  1. Open the bank’s official e-KYC portal and select an available account.
  2. Upload the requested customer photograph and front and back images of your NID.
  3. Provide nominee photo or NID information as requested.
  4. Complete customer and KYC details, then follow the portal’s account-creation steps.

If you do not have a valid NID or your application involves an entity, a minor, or another case outside the stated route, contact the bank about its branch or paper application process instead of assuming online opening is available.

The portal displays limits for certain deposits and transactions and attributes them to Bangladesh Bank guidance. Because the Bangladesh Bank guidelines index lists March 2026 e-KYC guidance, check the current applicable limits with the bank before relying on figures shown on the portal.

What to expect from Islamic banking rules

Bangladesh Bank’s Islamic banking guideline discusses principles, terminology and deposit and investment modes. The regulator describes it as supplementary to—not a replacement for—applicable banking and company laws and regulations. It does not remove the need to satisfy the bank’s account-specific eligibility and KYC requirements. See Bangladesh Bank’s Islamic banking guideline and its guidelines index.
