Android cannot open a Windows .exe file the way it opens a photo or a document. Android installs and runs apps packaged as APK files, so a Windows program needs a compatibility layer before it can run at all. The most practical option is Winlator, an Android app that can run some Windows x86_64 programs. It works for some software on some phones, not for every .exe file, and this guide explains how to try it and how to tell when it is not going to work.
Why an EXE file won’t open on Android by default
Windows executables are built to run on Windows. Android’s compatibility requirements for devices are built around APK files generated by the Android SDK, as set out in the Android Open Source Project’s Android 12 Compatibility Definition. Nothing in stock Android treats a .exe as an app, so tapping one in a file manager will not start it.
Renaming the file does not help. Changing program.exe to program.apk does not convert the program, and the file will fail to install or run. An EXE has to be run by a compatibility layer, not relabelled.

Winlator describes itself as an Android application for running Windows x86_64 applications with Wine and Box86/Box64. Wine is a compatibility layer, not a copy of Windows: the WineHQ project’s About page explains that it runs Windows applications on POSIX-compliant systems such as Linux, macOS and BSD. Winlator brings that approach to Android and adds Box86/Box64 to handle the processor architecture translation.

Setup steps
- Confirm that the program is a Windows x86_64 application. Winlator is documented for that category, and 32-bit or other architectures are outside what its project description covers.
- Download the Winlator APK from the project’s official site at winlator.org, then install it on your phone. Use only the official source, and only with software you trust.
- Launch Winlator and wait for its setup to finish. Do not interrupt the first run.
- Add your program by following the project’s current instructions. Setup steps can change between Winlator releases, so check the documentation on the project site rather than a copied guide from years ago.
- If the program does not start, work through the troubleshooting tips the project provides for specific software and performance issues.
What the project does not promise
The project does not claim that every Windows program, installer, game or hardware combination will run. Results depend on the program’s own requirements, the phone’s processor and memory, the graphics support available, and any dependencies the program needs. No public compatibility list in the sources reviewed for this guide establishes which specific programs run on which Android devices, so treat any single success as specific to that combination.
Before you try: check what you are running

- PORTABLE MEDIA CENTER - Enjoy vibrant visuals, immersive sound, and endless entertainment anywhere you go. The HD display has 480 nits of brightness for realistic graphics and dual Dolby Atmos speakers that provide impressive sound depth.
- ELEVATED EFFICIENCY - Experience the MediaTek Helio G85 processor and 60Hz refresh rate that ensure fluid browsing, responsive gaming, and lag-free streaming.
- The exact file name and where it came from. Only run executables from a source you trust. A downloaded installer from an unknown site is a malware risk on any platform.
- The architecture. Winlator is documented for Windows x86_64 applications. If you cannot tell what the program is built for, check the publisher’s system requirements or download page.
- What the program needs. Note whether it requires a specific Windows version, extra runtimes, a graphics feature or a mouse and keyboard. Each of these can block a launch.
- Your phone. Check available storage and RAM. Compatibility layers are demanding, and an older or budget device may fail even when the software itself is supported.
When it fails: troubleshooting branches
- The program never starts. Check the architecture first. If it is not x86_64, Winlator is unlikely to help.
- The program crashes during launch. Look for missing dependencies or runtimes that the program expects. Missing components are a common cause and are specific to each program.
- The program starts but is unusable. Slow frame rates or graphics errors point to performance or graphics limits on the device. Check the project’s performance tips and lower demands where possible.
- Input does not work. Some programs need controls that a touchscreen cannot provide. Confirm whether the program can be used with the input you have.
- Nothing works. The program may simply be unsupported on your device. This is a legitimate outcome and does not mean you set something up wrong.
The reverse direction: Phone Link runs Android apps on a PC
Readers sometimes look for the opposite of this task, running an Android app on a Windows computer. Microsoft Phone Link does that. According to Microsoft’s guide to using apps from your Android device on your PC, the apps keep running on the phone and are mirrored to the PC. The phone and PC need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. The Phone Link setup article covers the requirements.

The Windows Subsystem for Android has been retired
Older guides sometimes point to the Windows Subsystem for Android as a way to run Android apps on Windows. Microsoft’s support notice on apps from the Amazon Appstore states that the Windows Subsystem for Android and the Amazon Appstore were no longer available in the Microsoft Store from March 5, 2025. That feature ran Android apps on Windows, not Windows programs on Android, so it does not answer this question.

| Your goal | Route that fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Run a specific Windows x86_64 program on an Android phone | Winlator with Wine and Box86/Box64 | May work for some programs; not guaranteed for any single one |
| Open a Windows EXE by renaming it or double-tapping it | None | Will not work; Android does not run EXE files |
| Use Android apps from a Windows PC | Microsoft Phone Link | Apps run on the phone and are mirrored to the PC over the same Wi-Fi network |
| Run Android apps inside Windows | Not available from Microsoft | Windows Subsystem for Android and the Amazon Appstore were removed from the Microsoft Store on March 5, 2025 |
If your goal is a specific program that you cannot confirm will run on Android, it is worth checking whether a native Android version of that program exists before trying a compatibility layer.
