In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings. Next to Choose where to get apps, select The Microsoft Store only (Recommended). This is a Windows app-source preference—not the same as S mode or administrator-enforced application control.

Set Windows 11 to recommend or allow Store apps only

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Advanced app settings.
  3. Beside Choose where to get apps, select The Microsoft Store only (Recommended).

Microsoft documents this preference as a way to help protect your PC and keep it running smoothly. The menu may also offer options that allow apps from anywhere, with or without a warning or a Microsoft Store recommendation. The setting is not a guarantee that every possible way of running an app is blocked. Microsoft’s app recommendation settings instructions note that available options can vary by Windows version.

What if the Store-only option is missing or an app will not install?

First check whether the app is available in Microsoft Store. If it is not, this preference may prompt you to use the Store or adjust your app-source choice, depending on your Windows version and the installer. If the setting is unavailable or you cannot change it, the device may be managed by a work or school organization; contact its IT administrator rather than trying to bypass its restrictions.

For security, Microsoft also recommends using trusted download sources and keeping antivirus protection updated. Windows 11 includes Smart App Control, but the Store-only preference should not be treated as a substitute for those safeguards or as proof that Store apps are risk-free. Microsoft’s guidance on potentially unwanted software explains these protections.

Windows 10: legacy instructions

Microsoft’s Windows 10 path is Settings > Apps > Apps & features; the available app-source choices vary by version. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so this is legacy guidance rather than a current supported-Windows recommendation. Microsoft documents the Windows 10 and Windows 11 paths here.

How the setting differs from S mode and organization policy

Choice Scope and control Compatibility and reversibility
App-source preference A setting in Windows Settings for where apps should come from. Does not have the S mode restriction or administrator-managed enforcement scope.
Windows 11 S mode Built-in restriction that allows only Microsoft Store apps; available only in Windows 11 Home. Edge remains the default browser and Bing the default search engine. Leaving S mode is a one-way change.
AppLocker or WDAC policies Application restrictions configured and managed by an organization’s administrator. Compatibility depends on Windows servicing and management configuration; users should consult their administrator.

When S mode may fit

S mode is the relevant built-in option if you want the stronger restriction that users can install only Microsoft Store apps and your required apps and devices work within it. Microsoft says Windows 11 S mode requires Microsoft Edge for safe browsing; Edge remains the default browser and Bing the default search engine. If an app or assistive technology you need is not in the Store, you may have to leave S mode.

Leaving S mode is permanent

Microsoft states, “Switching out of S mode is one-way.” The switch is free, but you cannot return to S mode afterward. Before proceeding, verify that the software and devices you rely on are available and usable in S mode. If you decide to leave, Microsoft’s Windows 11 steps are Settings > System > Activation, find the switch-to-Windows section, select Go to the Store, then select Get on the S mode page. See Microsoft’s S mode exit instructions.

When an organization manages the device

A work or school administrator can keep a device in S mode or configure application restrictions through managed policies such as AppLocker or Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC). Microsoft’s AppLocker servicing article discusses support for Windows 10 versions 2004, 20H2, and 21H1 and all Windows 11 versions following specified updates dated September 30, 2022, and October 25, 2022. That historical compatibility statement does not establish whether a particular device is configured for those policies; administrators should verify its servicing and management setup. Microsoft’s AppLocker overview provides administrator-focused details.
